Hello fellow Naira landers, I appreciate all the great people on this thread who has contributed positively one way or the other. I am new here I am preparing to take the GRE and TOEFL exams in March. My plan is to study Msc Agric Economics or Agribusiness in any Ivy league school in the USA this year. I would like to ask,i hope its not too late to start searching for schools. Please @ all I need your suggestions. I checked the thread and it seems we have more Engineering prospects here, any advice and suggestions would be appreciated. I would also need relevant materials to prepare me adequately for study as well as school suggestions or relevant links. Considering my very tight work schedule I am trusting God to see me through. I am entirely new and have limited information but I seek knowledge P.S I am also doing my own search but I believe several good heads on Nairaland is better than one Awaiting your kind suggestions 2 Likes |

possibility01:Hey, Welcome to the thread. You are a little bit late for 2017 admissions considering that you have to write tests which take time and you are also targeting top programs. Be guided that looking for Ivy league institutions is not the wisest decision to make while applying to grad school. What you need to look out for is the grad program rankings. A quick search gave me this: http://www.phds.org/rankings/agricultural-economics More reliable ranking sites are usnews.com or forbes. Since you included business, this may change the dynamics and you may be looking at other ranking sites to make better informed decisions. Assuming you have at least 3.0/4.0, you should get to work and go through this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/3285858/general-u.s.a-student-visa-enquiries-part You have lots of information to gain from there. When you have specific questions, feel free to ask politely and you will get good and helpful responses. Good luck in your quest and please keep us posted. PS: When applying, look out for the deadlines which is usually around December or January for top institutions. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Hello guys, Happy New Year to you all! Spoke with a friend yesterday, and she told me she won a scholarship on ScholarX to study for an MBA @ Harvard, and that she will be sitting for her GRE on Sunday. As at the time we were speaking yesterday, she was yet to send her application to Harvard Business School, and she said she was trying to pay her application fee and forward her application ahead of the Nigerian time equivalent of the deadline (the deadline was 12 noon Boston time yesterday). Please does anyone know about ScholarX and how it works? Can you win a scholarship on the platform to study a course @ a school you're yet to apply to? |

manwonder:ScholarX? Really? That's strange. MBA scholarships, especially at Harvard, isn't small money. So if it's the truth, she most likely had applied and emerged successful with the ScholarX application before now. What's your motive for asking this, by the way? |

Dear Beloved Friends, I greet you all, wishing you a prosperous new year! Its my first time on this forum. I could see your selfless contributions to each other's progress. God will not leave you unrewarded! I wish I joined this thread before taking my standardized tests and selecting schools. However, I still draw maximum courage from you all especially SirRiddy, Danja, Toppiipii, Pennystate, Drhopefully, Scholarstical, to mention but a few. Although am not attempting to justify myself for the low GRE scores, I suffered a stomach upset on the day of the test. Intermittently, I held my stomach while taking the test. For about 10 minutes I couldn't make a reasonable introduction to my AWA Issue topic. I was almost crying on my seat, saying to myself "upon all the reading?" Eventually, it was 310 (Verbal=152; Quant.=158) and AWA=3.5. I took the TOEFL 10 days later and the devil's younger brother still followed me with a runny stomach that morning. After the reading and listening parts, I asked one of the proctors if I could cancel and be rescheduled but he said no. I prayed and finished up. But I cried after the test because it just reminded me of how I finished up my degree exams from a sick bed. 11 days later I surprisingly saw a score of 100. Although I've applied to 3 schools (KSU, Emory and Rochester), am still thinking whether to rewrite. Am worried that these may not get me funding. Please I need your suggestions. I'm seeking admission and funding into PhD Statistics. My academic profile is B.Sc 4.54/5 and M.Sc 4.87/5 with 3 research publications, though I don't know the American equivalent on 4-point scale. I'd like to start preparing again in earnest if am to retake the test(s). Please help a brother. Am so grateful and privileged to join you guys. Thanks and God be with you. 3 Likes |

manwonder: I don't know much about ScholarX but I remember there used to be a Sprite or 7up program very similar to what you are describing that was for an MBA in Harvard. I think the pre-qualification criteria had something to do with having a first class first degree and the Harvard admission. Afterwards, they go through a screening and whatever measures put in place before selecting one candidate that ends up getting the full sponsorship. Since it appears the reverse with ScholarX then she has nothing to worry about seeing that ScholarX may have some pre-agreement with Harvard. After all, how would they guarantee she would get the admission seeing how competitive it is? |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 1:59pm On Jan 05, 2017 |
tuffpuff: Let me reiterate that 8 months ago I may have egged you on to rewrite but considering what I know now I think it is unnecessary if you are considering fall admission. For one, your Undergrad and graduate GPAs are very competitive. How valuable this is, goes without saying. Second, you have very strong research experience which is the aim of graduate work (even over intelligence or high standardized test scores). Third, your standardized test scores are actually competitive. Don't get sucked in by bloggers and their clamour for 320+ scores. If you feel insecure about it then find a creative way to infuse it into your SOP and explain why. Your GPA(s) already evince that you are a consistently high performer and I doubt test scores (that are way above average BTW can tarnish that). Same goes for your TOEFL @ a composite score of 100. Except the top top Ivies I doubt any other schools had a cut off as high as even 93. Hope your speaking score is above 22 or thereabouts. It helps. 4 Likes |

I left Osogbo 1 pm yesterday and boarded a bus to Lagos, after spending about 5 hours (most of which I spent furiously reviewing Magoosh 1000 GRE Vocab) on the road We got to oshodi. From Oshodi I found my way to F and G suites at Ilupeju. It is a small hotel with good basic facilities such as constant power, Free WiFi and it is a short walking distance from JKK building. I had already booked online through hotels dot ng and after some delay was showed to my room. I had rounded up my preparation on Wednesday by taking Powerprep II, and I was not really happy with the result. However, I was determined to use the last two days to rest and conserve both my mental and physical energy. So the only thing I did was review my introduction to the AWA as PER Scholastica16 advice, but I couldn't resist the urge to solve some Quant, so did hard probability on Magoosh and did Kaplan Quant no. 10 online. By 10 pm I was ready to call it a night. I have read in online forums about the importance of good rest prior to the exam. I woke up around 1 a.m but forced myself to stay in bed. No more reading oooo. Later woke up around 4:30 am to pray. Stayed awake till 6 and prayed morning Salat. After that reviewed some AWA from Manhattan, I was determined to make a good start. By 7 I went back to bed with the AC on( I must rest ni) I set alarm for 9 o'clock to avoid story that touch but I really couldn't get any sleep. After tossing around for 45 minutes, I stood up took my bath and made my way to the test center. 3 Likes 1 Share |

I got to the center where I met young and not so young people. I jejely took my seat, there were some people pouring over a big textbook, probably Kaplan, I was like na now? I got Lucozade boost and Gala. I would need all the energy I can get. I was checked in and assigned to station 28B. Once seated I said a small prayer and psyche myself, This is the culmination of 3 months of assiduous prep,I must not blow it, No fighting any question, If you don't know it move on to the next question, I remembered myself. With that I started. First essay was on something about leaders, I attacked it and was able to conclude with 3 minutes left and used the remaining time for review. Next was argument, It was about questions to be answered, I couldn't come up with sufficient points immediately, so wrote my introduction first. Read it again and realized a survey was cited. That provided the impetuous and was able to write come up with good questions. Rounded up with about a minute left. The AWA flew by and in no time I was faced with the nitty-gritty. All through my prep my Verbal was quite strong so was hoping for VQVQV, but lo and behold the first section was Quant. I muttered to myself, "ETS never Make it easy, do they"? I got on with it and started well, got to number 5 and there was a hiccup, the question had a trap but I couldn't figure it out immediately. I chosed the obvious answer, marked it and moved on. It went really smoothly and I finished with about 7 minutes on the clock. I went back to the trap question, figured it out and quickly reviewed all other questions. I moved on to the first verbal and was like this is my time to shine. The first two text completion questions disabused me of that notion. No one does text completion quite like ETS. I plodded through the verbal but I didn't enjoy it and was frankly not sure of a number of the answers. I finished right on time, No time for review. I took my break, gulped down some Lucozade and stretched my legs. The guy I sat beside in the morning asked how am I finding the exam, He said the time was moving too fast. I didn't even know what to say. I got back to my seat just in time for start of second Quant. It was going pretty smoothly until maybe the 8th question when I realized it's most likely experimental because the questions were simple (surely I didn't mess up the first Quant, did l?) and not really varied. My suspicion was confirmed when I got to the data interpretation and saw another pie chart. ETS would never give someone pie chart twice, they aren't that nice. I finished before time was up and braced myself for 2nd verbal where I was looking to make amends. The second verbal was even more difficult than the first. I did the RC pretty well and am sure I have seen similar passages during my prep. I finished right on time and was like this verbal get as in be ooo. Next was the final section which I was sure was second Quant. And I was right because it was noticeable harder than the previous 2 Quant. I did it to the best of my ability and got to the last question with few minutes left. Reviewed the few I could and watched as the timer counted down. I sat back in my chair and reported my score. I closed my eyes and when I opened it my result was on the screen Verbal 165, Quant 165. I had to stop myself from screaming in delight as other test takers were still working. I sent scores to 4 schools and left the hall with a wide grin planted on my face. I thank Almighty God for his grace and mercy. I would also like to appreciate everyone on this forum, it would not have been possible without your help and guidance. Scholastica 16, drhopeful, happyday, Femi321, sirriddy, ChemEngr, iCool, cupsy and others. The last 3 months has been hectic, but it has been worth it. Gracias. 37 Likes 2 Shares |
