Alternative building material is what is going to save us in this country. We can't be saved until we wean ourselves from this silly cuddle we have with building with concrete.

Once the foundation has been laid, we should not have anything to do with concrete.
Nigeria is not ready for this. This is tropical country. A single fire outbreak will jeopardize entire building. Aside that, INSURANCE is no feasible in that country at this time.

These excuses are why the cost of building are relatively expensive.

Our forefathers, as evidenced by twinskenny, have been building houses primarily built out of wood for a very long time.

Nigeria has always been ready for alternative building materials, it's just laziness and unwillingness for artisans to retool that is causing the delay.

At least some folks are leading the charge as demonstrated previously by using metal studs.

And there is insurance in Nigeria. It may not be affordable to all but it is available.

I drew mine myself with the help of Segemoor, may God bless him on a piece of paper that i cannot find now.

What i did was to measure the space I had to play with, in my case it was easy. I gat 2 gates and the security house/power house is to be positioned between the 2 gates. Inside the gateman house itself is very simple, a room dived by 6inches block for the toilet/shower, run half inch pipe T from standing pipe on the wall extended for the security house for water, 4 inch pipe into dedicated chambers for waste and white PVC ceiling. 2 sets of windows. Job done. Roofing sheets was left over from the main building to match, electrical was under the compound circuit with dedicated meter. 2 double sockets and a 2 gang light for the room and also toilet/bath, flooring was left over broken tiles (so dont throw them away).

EgunMogaji:
Please let me know if anyone can share the plans for their gateman house.

Thanks.

See, you said FOREFATHERS. That's the time when Nigerians used to have sense. Today, time has changed. What we have now are "saggy boyz" with no brain. If they set wood house on fire, that's gobe right there. I wont mind iron though.

We can tell something is wrong in that country. You can imagine in the 70s/80s, Babangida, Buhari, Idiagbon, Murtala etc were in their 30s and they led the country. But today, 40yr old dude is still couching on his father's house and collecting allowance from papa. BIG DIFFERENCE.

So you want to start this new invention with these type of lazy people?. Goodluck

I don't need luck, just an artisan that can work with me. I tried but couldn't find any carpenter that wanted to get into framing a house in Ibadan.

Building a house as well as protecting it from nature and fire is not rocket science.

Time for trade schools to reemerge so we can have true artisans again.

Agree with this actually. Before i fenced my plot 4 months ago, I tried alternative instead of traditional bricks(blocks) for a plot and half. Man, the cost got me shivering and farting. #1.9m was the quotation compared to bricks 800k.

So you see why folks would be reluctant to move forward. To move forward, nigeria will need folks like you to kick people in the butt.

Trust me I tried when I was going to start my build.

I knew KolaShangOne and Spyder880 were both waiting for me to falter on all my grandiose plans.

Getting an ordinary concrete mixer to site was a chore in itself.

It's not up to me a simple one off homeowner but people on the ground doing builds on a daily basis to lead that charge.

My gateman house will be built with slab on grade and wood framing.

Alternate way of building is good, but for now all my build will be concrete for various reasons that I dont feel like arguing it here. Wooden house not for me now in Nigeria.

This is crazy. Anyone heard about this and how true is this story?

the couples went home for Christmas.. they had been sending monies home...for the husbands brother to build them houses. While at home this Christmas...this brother cooked food and sent over to his brother and wife. They died after eating the food.

Imagine this couple that went to Nigeria for holiday before Xmas and never returned back to US after so long away from home If this is true............

Or people make up story to be heard? ??

Lots happening bruh. Wanna be careful with folks man. Similar thing happened to my "uncle". He has been sending monies to his blood brother (same father and mother) to build his house to fall back on. Plus allowance for him and their mom. His brother would either give his mother peanut and pocket the rest or in most cases he doesn't visit her at all but lied to her that his brother in the US did not send money.

So he spent his brother's money on party and built a bungalow for himself. When 'uncle' went to nija, his brother used magic on him and threatened his life. Alfas and his pastor came to his aid but he was told to forget the house, This caused eternal enmity btw brothers. Finally his brother who embezzled his money passed away about this time last year. Uncle felt bad bcuz you know they are blood. Till this moment their mother is not aware of his son passing. They are afraid of telling her.

I think this should be the tool but the question is where can this be found...have searched to my best!!

This is a wonderful tool that will enhance neatness in block setting. But the issue is that we majorly have and use hollow blocks here. Can't we get a similar tool to accommodate our type of blocks.

Elephant/lafarge 32.5R cement is the best in terms of quality and strength for buidling in Nigeria

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by jossy26: 7:14pm On Jan 04, 2017

Based on what?
Cement strength is determined by the ability to meet its desired compressive strenght measured after 2days, 7days and 42days, within a required setting time, Dangote 32.5 sets a bit faster which means little gypsum was added while grinding the clinker and as such compromises it's strength although in terms of commercial value, the block makers/builders love the reduced setting time cos of turnover.

There's a set time for proper hydration of cement which lafarge doesn't want to compromise that's why the cement sets a little longer but on the long run its stronger

There's something called freelime that also has to be considered in cement strength but won't go into that

For now, I prefer the Elephant supaset. (Orange label) I have found it to bond quicker and the compressive strength I get is satisfactory.
