Likewise myself, I love teaching chemistry but there's no time for that. I can teach chemistry for free and I've developed methods overtime for simplifying chemistry to aid understanding. But my work has made it impossible to impact this knowledge to people. The thing is government need to make teaching as lucrative as any other big profession and sound minds won't bother earning a livelihood from teaching. If doctors, engineers and bankers will be collecting over 100k per month I wonder what stops teachers from earning the same.

I first taught Mathematics while I was waiting for NYSC in 2010 and during my NYSC I taught some Engineering courses in the polytechnic I served. Currently, I am a practising Engineer. I won't say I don't really enjoy my job as an Engineer but, I have discovered over time that I have a keen interest in teaching Mathematics. I really wish to go back to class room to teach mathematics but you know teacher's salary is not encouraging. I love to teach mathematics and don't mind doing it for free alongside my job but, NO TIME.
I need an advise on how to go about this. I need to go back to what I love doing.
Patiently waiting for your responses.

My dear brother, I have only 1 thing to tell you: FOLLOW YOUR PASSION!
Passion can lead you to unimaginable greatness. I will mention just 1 example to you: Bill Gates was a medical student in a good University-training to be a medical doctor and he dropped out from that to follow his passion-software production. Of course, you and I both know who, what and where he is now. From teaching maths, you could even end up opening a school one day. Also, do you know that you could actually start a specialised mathematics lecture center? Anyway, whatever it is, just follow your passion. Cheers.

At OP truth is that you are neither an Engineer nor a Teacher. For now if you are in a lucrative engineering employment or a fulfilling engineering private practice I would strongly advice that you focus on the engineering and become a chartered Engineer first (that is if your current experience is registrable by COREN). Later you can take Engineering as an Entrepreneurship venture while you pursue Teaching as a career. You could at that point establish your Engineering firm, employ Intern Engineers who would help you sell your engineering products and services while you take an employment in high school as a Mathematics Teacher and enrol for your PGDE immediately and become registrable by Teachers Registration Council. Anything short of this you will neither be here nor there and become like every other mediocre we have all around the country who do not see the need to emerge as professionals. (This is my model though. I was trained as a Chemical Engineer but currently working as a Chemistry Teacher - my passion - but i'm doing private engineering practice to get money that Teaching cannot give)

I'm a lawyer. I enjoy teaching literature but can't leave my law job for high school teaching because of poor salary of teachers. What did I do? I started a literature blog where I provide study guide to literature students preparing for WAEC/NECO. You can do the same. I think you should develop yourself to the point where you can secure a lecturing job in a tertiary institution. With that, you will be satisfying your passion and getting the right pay.
Re: A Practising Engineer But, So Passionate About Teaching Maths In High School. by Udochee(m): 11:42am On Jan 14, 2017
This is very tricky. While some are praying to leave their teaching job for an engineering one, some people want to leave their engineering job for a teaching job. If you so desire to teach why not do it on part time basis for now then if you're convinced that that path is the best then follow it..
Ponder on this [i]some people wey get head no get cap, while some people wey get cap no get head[i]

I'm also in the same situation. My records and achievements in the teaching profession, coupled with the joy and satisfaction I derive from it makes me more passionate about it. Anytime I teach a class, they break previous records.

Now I wish to leave my present job that is so stressful and time consuming but the salary in the teaching job too small.

rubbish....

you want to teach engineering to the young ones... Our problem is not theoretical(maths is theoretical) its practical...

you want to teach maths in theory how does that help the young ones when they can't turn raw materials into ENGINEERED finished products.. angry angry angry

How many machines have you built angry angry angry
How many micro-controllers have you designed angry angry angry

these are the things you're meant to teach the young ones angry angry angry

These type of arguments are really silly and shows this poster is ill-informed. What sort of inventor lacks basic theoretical skills? I'll tell you, none. Period. If having filed a US patent qualifies one as an inventor, then I'm one, and I work with people who are inventors, even as engineers, basic math and science skills are never in short supply.

Nigeria doesn't pride itself as a huge science and technology country, so, for a child to aspire to the highest level in science and technology, he/she would have to look outside Nigeria. And how do you attract the best scholarship/funding opportunities? Ability in subjects this poster is gleefully discounting will open that door of opportunities.

Quite commendable. What the nation needs are people like you. Your field experience as an engineer can equally come in handy via useful examples as you pass on your knowledge of math's (and further maths) to young students. Well done.

I have been very privileged to have resigned from different jobs to pursue my passion. However, the responsibility of providing for your family determines to a large extent the professional choices you make. I advise you to try teaching privately for a while. Once you can't realistically handle the demands of your job then leave it. Passions pays but it might take a while. Keep your fire burning. God bless.

get off your high horse cause you're suffering from superiority complex angry angry

Your brain should have informed you that Nigeria has lots of highly skilled theoretical teachers including the OP...

You're silly for saying "for a child to aspire to the highest level in science and technology, he/she would have to look outside Nigeria"... angry

Nigeria has to start from somewhere.. If all Nigeria's intelligent theoretical teacher can't do both practical and theory then silly comments like yours won't end... angry angry

You're filled with self hate and I don't relate with people that are filled with self hate angry angry angry
Thought processes leading up to comments like this can only mean one thing. I cited my US patent to show my credibility in this debate. There's a reason the expenditures on R and D by countries is highly correlated with industrial development and high school "practical" doesn't cut it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_research_and_development_spending. Western powers reached the period of industrial revolution after 2000 years even with steady investments in R and D, sadly we haven't started walking that road. But we can't do it by ignoring basic theoretical skills required to achieve these lofty goals either.

And having attended schools both in Nigeria and western countries, we seem to overstate the theoretical knowledge of Nigerian professors/teachers. They could actually do better in this department.

Am also an engineer in embryo I would advice you to do what you do best.
Re: A Practising Engineer But, So Passionate About Teaching Maths In High School. by JerryQ: 9:57pm On Jan 14, 2017
i read some of our comments and i just laughed because some persons don't know 'You might not find rest within until you live out your passion'. Am just like you, read Elect Elect Engineering but am very passionate to teach Mathematics and Physics. All through my Uni days i had a tutorial center where i coach students, in fact i actually started a tutorial center immediately i finished my SSCE because i just loved teaching. I find inner peace, joy and rest when i teach and very few things in life give me such satisfaction.

After graduating, i decided to take my Passion to a new level by starting a school since i know some educational institutions might not fully understand me/my passion and might not give me all the room i need to express myself. so i tried raising the start up capital from businesses i could do. i most confess It wasn't an easy process as i had to leave teaching for some time to focus on raising the cash. Every passing day without teaching seemed incomplete. At a time in between, i had to start teaching JAMBITES for free in my church cos i couldn't withstand seeing students suffer over things i could easily help them with. Anyway, the process of raising the money was now delaying i had to apply another means of meeting family and friends to help me complete the cash. This one worked, they were all willing to help in every way possible. Never undermine the support of family and friends. By the grace(help) of God, I direct a school today and guess what, i don't sit in my office because am in the class most of the time. I teach as long as i want in any manner i want. Today Saturday i went to school to teach my students preparing for exams. If i want to teach on Sunday sef i can tell them to come for lesson.

So i feel you Bro cos i am like you. This is my candid advice.
(1) What class of students do you really have passion teaching? Yes, you said high school but you also mentioned teaching in a Poly. The reason i ask is because i have passion to teach high school/SSCE/JAMB/Pre science Students and if you offer me a lecturing job in a University, i would only take it to raise money for me to start teaching high school students. If you feel you want to teach Uni/Poly Students, i would advice you further your education as you work after which you should get a lecturing Job. However, if you are passionate to teach high school students i would suggest you keep on with your Job while you gather money to start your Passion.

(2) You could also find a way to teach along side practicing your engineering. Even Saturday Classes can do much.

(3) You can gradually shift from Engineering to Teaching, just that you might need PGD in education. I know of some private secondary schools paying above 150k. i said gradually cos you need the engineering Job to keep financing your dreams. Don't quit your Job until you have a better paying alternative.

i wish i could really talk to you one on one, in anyway i wish you the very best in life . FIND A WAY TO LIVE THE LIFE YOU WANT!
