A lot of comments here don't appreciate that international politics isn't about emotion it's about self interest.

Since independence France has been a two faced friend to Nigeria. On one hand it has huge economic interests in Nigeria and on the other hand it has huge political interests in the francophone countries. If the economic interest is clear to everyone, the political might not be. So let me explain. France owes it's global position to its overseas colonies. It has never won a war and does not have any company in the global top 20. It does have good food and Paris is beautiful in partssmiley

De Gaulle's dream of French empire lives on in these colonies and the French take them seriously. As their super central bank, France also makes a lot of money from them. It is NOT in Frances interest to have Nigeria become a west africa economic powerhouse exporting goods and services to these former french colonies. It IS in Frances interest to use these former colonies to dump it's products in nigeria using smuggling roots.

So what should Nigeria do? If we take the comments here as an example, Nigeria should shun these type of meetings and put its nose in the air. But is this strategically wise. Is it not better to engage the "hostiles" and neutralize their risk through mutual self interest. Nigeria cannot attack a francophone nation and trigger Frances defence pact with that country. But it can engage, build useful and deep relationships that wil slowly help it advance it's own economic interests. The adage " keep your enemies close" is a truism in international politics.

It is good for PMB and indeed any other Nigerian HoS to attend meetings like this. Afterall we are still in th Commonwealth and extract as many gains for its citizens while slowly building up its export capabilities.

For those who don't want us to play second fiddle to these type of countries - heck we should burn their letters of invitation, I have some advice. Start consuming and using only made in Nigerian products. For the women ignore La Coste, Hermes, Channel and LVMH and patronize Nigerian designers, bag and shoe makers and even perfumers. We have tons of people in Aba Lagos and PH who will replace these products. If we do these things our President will be able to stop attending these meetings. Until then let him attend and hold your peace and carry your Hermes bag proudly.

What is the theme of the summit? Is it anchors on the problem of African continent and the way forward? Or jst trival and empty summit.

I just hope that some day we in Africa will develop so well to have the sense of self-worth that will help us avoid the humiliating angle to all these summoning.. The American president had his own meetings with all African leaders, it led to no where.., the Chinese president had his, baa-bu, the french is having maybe the second of this jamboree... Oyibo keeps summoning African leaders right left and center to endless conferences that yield little or no benefits to the African continent. 90% of the francophone Heads of States here were/are puns recruited by Paris to hold their respective countries down while France ra-pes wantonly..., mercilessly. . They will organise elaborate meetings to talk and talk and when everybody looks the other way, African leaders that are seriously working to drive out poverty from the continent are assassinated, overthrown or have their governments distablised while western surrogates willing to run down their countries for foreign multi-nationals are elevated.. It is depressing..

Francophone heads of state are sell outs in general.
You guys don't understand this thing very well.

The same France that is still collecting a colonial tax from 14 African countries, a country that collected reparations from Haiti for decades because the Haitians kicked out the French and abolish slavery. This same France that is summoning all this dumb a.ss African leaders mandated her former African colonies to pay 50% of the proceeds from selling their resources into the French treasury and you people believe Africa is independent and why I am suspicious when outspoken anti colonial leaders like Yahya Jameh are threatened with removal by force.

France does not collect colonial tax o, that article floating on the internet is filled with falsehood.

THE LIST IS ENDLESS.
1. AFRICAN – JAPAN SUMMIT
2. AFRICAN- CHINA SUMMIT
3. BRITISH –AFRICA SUMMIT ( TAGGED COMMONWEALTH )
4. USA – AFRICA SUMMIT
5. INDIA – AFRICA SUMMIT
6. BRAZIL – AFRICA SUMMIT
7. FRANCE – AFRICA SUMMIT
THESE ARE THE LIST OF SUMMITS THAT HAVE BEEN SET UP BY THESE FOREIGN GOVERNMENT OVER THE YEARS AND THEY HAVE SUGAR-COATED THE MINDSET OF OUR GULLIBLE AFRICAN LEADERS INTO THINKING THAT WHEN THEIR RESPECTIVE COUNTRIES JOIN THESE GROUPINGS IT WILL ACCELERATE THEIR COUNTRY ECONOMIC GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT WHICH IS COMPLETELY FALSE.
WHAT COMES WITH ALL THIS SUMMIT ARE:
1. WASTE OF TIME
2. WASTE OF MONEY
3. WASTE OF RESOURCES
4. CORRUPTION
5. RETROGRESSION AND UNDER-DEVELOPMENT OF THE AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

TAKE FOR EXAMPLE, THE FRANCE – AFRICA SUMMIT THAT PRESIDENT BUHARI HAS GONE TO ATTEND HAS NOT ADDED VALUE TO COUNTRIES THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE PAST SUMMITS ESPECIALLY THE FRANCOPHONE COUNTRIES THAT WERE FORMER COLONIES OF FRANCE.
I AM WONDERING IF NIGERIA CAN BENEFIT FROM FRANCE WHEN THE FRENCH CAN NOT HELP THEIR POOR AFRICAN COUNTRIES THAT WERE FORMERLY ITS COLONY.
COUNTRIES LIKE BENIN REPUBLIC, TOGO, IVORY COAST, MALI, NIGER, BUKINA FASO STILL REMAIN VERY POOR TILL TODAY DESPITE THEIR ECONOMIC RELATIONSHIP WITH FRANCE A RICH COUNTRY.
I AM OF THE VIEW THAT AFRICA SHOULD FORGET ABOUT ALL THIS DISTRACTIVE ALLIANCES AND LOOK WITHIN AFRICA FOR THEIR GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.
WE MUST STOP LICKING THE ASS OF THE PAST COLONIAL MASTERS WHO WILL NOT ALLOW US TO DEVELOP RAPIDLY.
TAKE FOR EXAMPLE, CHINA AND SINGAPORE ARE TWO ASIANS COUNTRIES THAT LOOKED WITHIN THEMSELVES AND WORK VERY HARD TO GET TO THE GREAT LEVEL THEY ARE TODAY.
QUITE SADLY, PRESIDENT BUHARI IS WASTING PRECIOUS TIME ATTENDING FOREIGN SUMMIT WHEN THE REAL PROBLEM IS RIGHT WITHIN NIGERIA AND NOT ABROAD.

You are right. International relations demands interacting with other nations. The problem with PMB is he has over done it. Even with meetings that were not completely relevant, or meetings where he could have delegated, he has chosen to go in person. Coupled with his non-performance at home, I can understand why people are infuriated every time they see his pics on these trips.

You make a very good point. But does PMB have a big role in domestic policy - economy? He has ceded that to the office of the Vice President. Security, corruption yes. I know for sure that the VP's office handles the economy and that the staff can pretty much get along with it. There is a small group of people ( who insert themselves into government to create/defend their interests) who hobble the VP's office. Hopefully their influence will be curtailed

Well, I think as the president the buck lies with him. If the office of the Vice President is not handling the economy the right way, then he should intervene (I actually didn't realize that is ceded to the office of the VP). Besides the President is responsible for appointing the CBN governor whose policies will have an impact on the economy, so again, it lies with him.

Haha! that your suggestion is going to be a hard one for several people, lol. Nigerians are addicted to anything foreign (unfortunately).

Simple and masterful. My only gripe is the bit about us needing to form closer ties with all those slavish Francophone Nations albeit for practical effects. We don’t need them. And it still rankles every time our president appears in the heads of states photos for one of these France organized summits. They’re so evocative of those trans-Atlantic photos of black men grouped at the feet of some white man linked to one another by chains. We have our suspicions why without fail the president attends, in the company of the other poodles, when France whistles, but not why so gladly.

Have you spent considerable time in French speaking African countries to know what is on ground there?

I've been to 5, and spent considerable time there and I know what is on ground because I have friends in certain places.
That said, the French businesses are in bed with African leaders to cheat their countries., bollore and areva aretwo examples.

And the French know how power hungry some of the elite are, so if one is not doing their bidding again, the power hungry person strikes a better deal with the French in secret, then overthrow the government and take over, or you think they just overthrow people anyhow just like that?

The African elite profit from the system, and they don't want it to end just yet, (except for stubborn countries like Benin and Guinea)
When the elite are ready to stop being house negros, then the French will behave
