Nigerains are arguably one of the most resilient group of people on earth. Unfortunately, they apoear to be the most complacent set also. This is why politicians, religious men and women, etc can do and say anything and go scot free even if such pronouncement, actions etc, could ordinarily be criminal in other climes. Severally we have seen , read, witnessed people in government make promises that they reneged on, yet we still celebrate them and even re-elect them to ssme offices. One such promise that was made by the Honorable Minister for Power, Works & Housing. In an effort introduce the new electricity tariffs regime, the minister, the electricity regulatory agency and relevant stakeholders promised Nigerian that as soon as they are able to put in place new pricing regime, government would ensure that citizens do not pay for electricity that they have not consumed. To ensure that this is the case, the minustry and the regulatory agency assured Nigerians that prepaid meters would be avalable to all. Unfortunately almost one year into the new tariff regime, prepaid meters are still elusive. This has therefore meant that the prople are billed for power not consumed as the distribution companies still charge on estimation and most time for power not supplied. At the commencement of government decision to up electricity tariffs several NGOs and pseudo-pro-democracy and consumer advocacy groups were in the forefront seeking relevance. Today, they all seem to have abandoned this course or "could they have been settled"? Fellow Nigerians, forget political party affiliiation, let us come together and pressure this government to keep to their promises. Government need to give the distribution companies upto mid-year 2017 to provide prepaid meters otherwise, citizens should stop paying estimated bills. |

The DISCOs make far more money issuing estimated bills to consumers, instead of installing pre-paid meters in the buildings of such consumers. With a pre-paid meter, you only pay for exactly what you consume. The amount you load on your meter, entitles you to a certain kilowatt of electricity for your usage. Think of the way recharge cards loaded on a GSM line, enables the owner of the phone to make calls. No credit, no calls. But with estimated bills? What you are billed is solely at the DISCOs discretion. Na only dem know inside their mind, how much dem go charge you for dat month. It has little to do with your consumption. If they install pre-paid meters for everybody, haba, dem market go spoil finish be dat!! You never hear say "cunny man die, cunny man bury am?" That is the story behind why they cannot install pre-paid meters for everyone. Abi, you wan kill their business? 3 Likes |

Our nation is set up in a way that forces forward thinking states and region to carry along not so forward thinking states or regions. If anybody ever generates power beyond a certain threshold, they are forced to send it into the power grid from where parasitic states can just sit down and enjoy it. It is sad that Fashola can't provide common meters to sooth our pains. |

asuustrike2009: But then it would be easier to track! When your credit gets deducted abnormally by the GSM companies, you can always tell, abi? Same thing would happen with the pre-paid meters. A certain amount of credit should give you a specific amount of kilowatts, not so? 1 Like |

Those criminals that write outrageous amount of money as electric bills even when you don't see light throughout the month will hide the prepaid meters. Nigeria's foundation is embedded in corruption, I doubt anyone can change that fact. |

There will never be up to 10% prepaid metres, the reason is simple, if you all get prepaid metres, then DISCOs or REGGAEs will not be able to bring you crazy bills, e.g. 10,000 naira for a three bedroom flat like mine with just total of 10 hours of electricity for the whole month. 1 Like |

When will the DISCOs (especially Eko Disco) start fixing faulty pre-paid meters on their customers' premises? Or is there a workshop where we can take pre-paid meters to, in order to get it fixed?? |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dN3RbqhlQM Local meter manufacturers in Nigeria seek government assistance Local manufacturers of electricity meters want the Federal Government to assist them in accessing foreign exchange to import major components for producing meters. They made this known during an inspection of a meter factory in Lagos by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing. |

Horus: Nice write-up, but it is these same meter manufacturers that cried out several months ago, that the DISCOs were not patronising them, but preferred to import pre-paid meters. So I hope things have changed. So my question is still this - when pre-paid meters become faulty, who fixes them or how do they get fixed? Is there any mechanism in place through which the Discos can retrieve and repair faulty pre-paid meters, and then return them to the customer, or re-install the fixed meters back in their customers' premises? Answers, anyone?? |
Re: Electricity Tariffs: Why No Prepaid Meters Yet? by Horus(m): 4:42pm On Feb 05, 2017 |
laudate: If your pre-paid meters become faulty, your supplier should replace it. They should also refund you any money they owe you as a result of the fault. |
Re: Electricity Tariffs: Why No Prepaid Meters Yet? by laudate: 6:34pm On Feb 05, 2017 |
Horus: PHCN, the predecessor of Eko Disco supplied it. Now, instead of Eko Disco putting in place a mechanism to repair faulty pre-paid meters, they have ignored all our entreaties and gone ahead to issue us with estimated bills for electricity supply, that is nowhere near what we consume. it is a scam that enables them to make more money. Do you get it, now? |
