Why Do Unemployed Nigerians Want A Job But Reject Marketing Job At All Cost? by Medley(m): 11:27am On Jan 17, 2017 |
Why do most unemployed Nigerians want Job but reject marketing jobs at all cost? I have always asked myself this question, and it seems to baffle reasoning that even in the dearth of Jobs for fresh graduate and entry level position In Nigeria it’s not the same with marketing jobs as they are a lot of new advert daily looking to massively employ graduate with little or no experience and are ready to train them but many unemployed Nigeria will never even apply for a marketing Job even if it pays double of their current earnings. The branch manager of that bank you crave to be in his position must have vast experience in marketing and no organisation will make anybody the branch manager if the person has not been a marketer before. The first thing a Nigerian will say after seeing a new opening is – ‘I hope this is not a marketing job’ , ‘it’s a marketing job, don’t apply’ etc. The dread for marketing jobs have persuaded major company to put up advert that are meant to deceive or disguise as a different kind of job to applicant not to know that they are actually applying for a marketing job until they arrive the company and are informed of the full job description of the position they are being interviewed and assessed for. You will see job title like Customer service executive, client support executive, business development executive, relationship officer, client relationship executive etc. with job description that will never indicate that it is a marketing job and can only be deciphered by those that have this knowledge beforehand. It was not the case a decade ago, where marketing jobs come as marketing job and bear the title of marketing and the exact job description, what have changed. It may not be far-fetched from poor working conditions, where unemployed are asked to use their money to mobilize for new and prospective customers and in some event where they are unable to close deals with new customers they won’t be paid salary or even commission. Most are also employed as contract staffs and this is someone that is supposed to be treated with good conditions since they are saddled with meeting with client that will remain with you for many decades even after they leave, some are not even provided with any means of transportation to meet new or old client. I think they is more to this, why do you think most Nigerians flee marketing jobs, compared to my observation in other nations of the world. my observation on http://naijamatterashedeyhot..com/2017/01/why-do-most-unemployed-nigerians-want.html |

Marketing roles have targets attached to them. These targets most times are almost impossible to meet. Failure to meet these targets affects your salary. That's the simple reason why most people dread marketing. 77 Likes 2 Shares |

The targets given are not realistic and sometimes the product or service require heavy convincing, the pay is usually very poor compared to work done! 21 Likes |

I don't think people really hate marketing that much, it's the abuse of its job function that's dreaded. *Targets are most times difficult or impossible to meet. No one likes the idea of his/her career growth being tied to such. *Nigerians are not even open to new products. The devil you know is better than the angel you don't know mindset, before you say a word...they'll say they're not interested. (e.g) You have been eating Indomie Noodles for decades and I come to market John Smith Noodles to you, will you budge? *The products being marketed are most times not competitive enough. You send marketers to go market a product at the same price with competitive brands. The marketers are asked the usual, what will you people give me? They become dumb. No significant difference in the price or services to convince buyers and customers to make that switch to your product. *Harassment: the guys are scared of not meeting targets because they don't have breast and bumbum. The girls on their part are scared of donating their vaginas. Some men won't subscribe to your services out of their good mind. 107 Likes 11 Shares |

pocohantas: But I have been in the marketing department for close to four years now If you are not good... you are not good. Marketing is a skill... not an option. I read Engineering but ditched it for my beloved marketing. Go to my CV and see all the roles I have handled. From Sales Associate to Marketing Analyst to Business Development to Business Analyst. So the list continues. If you don't have the skill... you don't have the skill. Sometimes they give me a target of 8 million per month . I meet up at least half which is a PASS mark! P.S. I don't work on commission oo 12 Likes |

BiafranBushBoy:It's good you called it a 'skill', meaning it can be acquired. Whether it's a skill or not isn't in dispute. The topic here is why it's dreaded, even people that have the skill would very much dread the job if their career growth and salary is rationed on commission basis. You don't work on commission that's why your mouth is running. Go and ask people that work on commission how far. @NnamdiN: Thanks. Contact me if there is a comedy job 33 Likes 4 Shares |

biafranbushboy your monthly target keep changing with every post, previously your target was 5million naira which you met. Lol. I think its a problem of poor condition and not necessarily lack of the skill set as you posit here 3 Likes |

A target of 8 million is no target at all where i work. First target in my life was 400 million naira half year as a graduate trainee from training school . Although i agree with you that Marketing is a skill . Majority of Nigerian firms set out target for staff especially fresh graduates without proper mentoring and also don't provide necessary palliatives to make it an easy ride . WHEN THERE ARE GOOD AND BETTER VACANCIES IN THEIR COMPAMIES AND ORGANISATIONS THEY GIVE THE ROLES TO THEIR RELATIVES. WHEN THERE ARE MARKETING ROLES THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SWEAT TO PAY SALARIES OF OTHER STAFF SITTING IN THE OFFICE THEY ADVERTISE. THEY SHOULD ALSO GIVE MARKETING JOBS TO THEIR RELATIVES. 10 Likes 1 Share |

An average fresh graduate who still has a long way to build in his or her career wouldn't risk having a sack in his CV... It's actually difficult in any part of the world getting another job after been fired.. Like u said marketing is fun, it's a skill, nice but I must say, until Organization's make it more sustainable and build confidence among marketers, it will still be dreaded. y we dey discriminate a customer care services Job, operation, procurement over a marketer. They set target and sacking if it's not meant without notification..in fact they go as far as not even conducting aptitude test because they see marketers as losers.. . knowing fulling well SKILLS are met to be acquired. Nobody was born to be persuasive by nature. But one can learn on the Job. so I think if the Job can become more sustainable it won't be dreaded. but at its stands, ... 4 Likes |

Lol mehn marketing for Nigerian companies is something else o The first problem is that the average customer is resistant to marketing. Once you introduce yourself as a representative of any company, you can just see the mental walls start to go up. People are out there looking for ways to get money and the moment they realize you want to take money from them they lose interest. The second problem is that your superiors may refuse to be understanding. So for the average marketer the day is full of various forms of rejection. You get to the office and oga looks at you with disgust because you can't meet his targets, you go out to the market and the customers look at you with disgust because when they prayed for good things to come their way that day, they probably didn't have you in mind. My first marketing job was for a garbage collection firm and I was successful but it was not easy. My boss seemed unable to conceptualize the fact that two hours of door to door marketing in the hot sun is worth 2 days of sitting in a cool air conditioned office 5 Likes |
