Beautiful pictures. Was busy at Alaka quarter (Uvwie Kingdom) during the yuletide season watching their beautiful Street masquerade display. It was a celebration of beautiful Urhobo culture. The melodious songs, display of glorious dance steps, was truly captivating. Some of the masquerades here, were also in action at the Alaka cultural carnival.

Okere Urhobo wado!
Special regards to High Chief Wilson Omavowa Eboh, he is maternally Uvwie.

We do. There are festivals in every clan. Just that Christianity and anti-traditionalism are phasing them out and rendering them stale and obsolete.

What Urhobo needs is a cultural revival which will cut across our language, dressing, food, festivals, etc. We need modern Urhobo youths to embrace the culture before it goes into extinction.

Don't bring bigotry into this thread. I beg you. There's no where Itsekiri was mentioned here. If you think these are itsekiri masquerades, create your own thread and state it there.

Don't bring your "genetic engineering" here. Since when did Okumagba become an Itsekiri person? Or you can't see him there? You think Okumagba will attend an Itsekiri event?

Oga. Those are itsekiri masquerades. Take it or leave it. Don't be like that.

I totally agree with too you. Religion especially Christianity is a major cause of the decline of urhobo culture.
And also most importantly education and enlightenment. People see the culture as local and Such donot want to be associated with it.
Am hopeful things will change for the better by maybe re-branding the culture as a whole to attract both native and non native to it.

God bless urhobo nation and delta state as a whole.

Frathermathy, never knew you were Urhobo cheesy
Yeah, the Iyerhi is an annual festival of the Ughelli people, though there are other ones but Iyerhi have grown to be the official Ughelli festival.

Ekene of Agbarha-Otor is another unique festival that is held once in every 15 years (heard the time has been reduced to 10yrs or so but not sure)

Sadly, I don't have enough knowledge to share about them since I've not physically experienced them before. I've only witnessed the Agbarha-Warri Odju Owhurhie festival which is commonly called "Agbassa Juju" and then some Masquerade festivals here and there especially in Otokutu, my maternal home.

Since Ughelli is my hometown, I promise to look for a description of the Ughelli festival, create a thread on it and notify you accordingly.
Thanks.
