Helloo !
Thumbs Up to you guys! You have been wonderful on this thread. Though I did a crash GRE exam last year but the info I got here was very helpful, I Scored 289 (V- 141, Q - 148), Analytical writing score 3.0, graduate of Mathematics, with GPA of 3.07/4.0 upon conversion to U.S standard.
My desire is M.S Applied Mathematics with GA or RA offer.
GRE-289
GPA - 3.07/4.0
Field - M.S Applied Mathematics.

Pls any help?? Schools that I can apply to.

I will like to also apply to a UK school, is there any any additional thing to get and which schools can you advise me to apply to?

Thanks in Anticipation.

Did you write the TOEFL? If you want a GA position in Mathematics which is usually in teaching, endeavor to write the TOEFL.

Also, based on your quant score, what you are seeking will be difficult because you are expected to score high as a mathematics graduate.
From my observation, you have two options, either you rewrite the GRE and score high in the quants or you have tuition for your first year. You might be lucky to get a GA in your second year if you work hard.

In fact, most graduate programs in Maths require the subject test. Hence for schools that do not require the Subject test, you need to score high on the Quant Section. If you really need funding, please rewrite the General GRE and write the TOEFL and score high on the speaking section.

Please, this time around, do not do a "crash GRE exam".

The gurus in the house will add their knowledge later. All the best.

I think we should move on from the fact that O'Green failed to report his scores ad experience. As much as I don't agree with his decision, He is not the first nor will He be the last to do so. Some even neglects the thread entirely once their test is done. This thread has always been courteous and civil, please let keep it that way.

I got my official GRE scores and AWA score is 4.5 I am a tad disappointed as I was hoping to emulate Scholastica16 90 something percentile score. The 4.5 is 82nd percentile which is more than good enough for my field. Forward and upwards.

I am having a challenge getting suitable referees. Those I would like to use are not responding to their emails, and most schools require online submission of letters of recommendation preferably through institutions based email addresses. Can I get letters from someone who is not my former Lecturer?. Suggestions are needed please.

You be Oliver Twist. LOL.

As a matter of fact anyone who is a lecturer either within or without your department can play a role. His letter just has to explain the capacity in which he is recommending you as that could go a long way in determining the veracity of his claims. It is not necessary that he must have lectured you. He could be someone who even claims he only read your work or referred to it in some other work he was doing. That way, he is indirectly guaranteeing that you would be a good fit to the grad school you are applying to and that's what they really care about.

As another matter of fact, I noticed they ask the referees to ascertain one's motivation for research, ability to communicate in English, bent for teaching, discipline and teamwork mentality even above one's class rank or intelligence when compared to other students the lecturer had worked with. Like I said in some previous post, most grad schools are realizing graduate work is beyond having great grades or stellar standardized test scores. Can you contribute meaningfully to an extensive body of work? Can you add something new? That's a rhetorical question Or one that referee should be able to answer.

Congrats on the AWA. Cheers.

Hello guys please I need your opinion on this issue.
I am applying for MS in ECE with communications as my area of interest.
My referee however mentioned my industrial experience in power systems engineering in his recommendation letter.
I think mentioning power systems engineering might reduce my chances of getting in since I am going for communications.
I need your opinions please!

It won't. How did he relate your industrial experience in Power Systems engineering to your preparation for graduate work? That's what they would be looking out for.

Thanks to everyone who kept asking and showing concern. My TOEFL was released today.

(R 29 L 29 S 26 W 28) composite: 112

Nothing earth-shattering. The highlight of my score is my speaking of 26 (which I didn't expect as I had informed the house earlier that I barely ever finished explaining myself when the time elapsed. One other time I meant to say 'dilemma' (someone was stuck between choices) and I ended up saying 'debacle'. Quickly changed it to predicament which is a good synonym for dilemma. I felt it would come-out imprecise to whoever was scoring me sha but it is whatever. Lowlight will be the writing joor. I expected a full 30 as I constantly compared myself to the Indians and Russians online that got 115-118 with perfect Writing scores.

I want to accuse ETS of malfeasance and demographic bias in scoring but I don't have empirical evidence. grin

I know this is a GRE thread but if anyone is preparing for TOEFL especially the speaking aspect do not panic if you are talking and you see the seconds ticking away. The evidence shows that one's overall score is not affected by this. Do not also panic if you finish talking way before the time. I don't think it hurts one's overall score as well. Try to pronounce your words slowly (many don't know this but Nigerians are accused of talking too fast).

Cheers.

Hi guys. I have a really stupid question to ask.

I want to study in the uk for my master's degree, after which I will proceed for a PhD in the USA. Do I need to write any English tests assuming my plan works out?

Because I saw on some University Web pages that some teaching assistanships would still require English proficiency test scores from international students regardless of where they study.

Help me out guys.

By the way I've been a silent follower of this thread since God knows when. My original plan was to apply to several us schools. The University of Georgia was top of my list. But I changed my mind and am applying for the Chevening and Commonwealth Shared Scholarships. Amurika coming up soon.

For US schools that require you to take an English test, a Master's degree in the UK would not qualify you for an exemption.

Georgia Tech and UM College Park do not require an English test. You may search for similar schools, if desired.

This is not necessarily correct. Some schools will exempt one from english language tests if you possess a masters degree from the UK. always check the departmental website or university website if in doubt. Eg, university of mississippi and university of wisconsin will exempt one from IELTS/TOEFL if you have a masters degree from the UK.
