Pedagogue:
Many of the comments here are based on Bias, not Facts. Claiming that you have been to/graduated from any of the Universities is a bad way to start your answer. As this is an anonymous forum, any claim of being a graduate/student of any of the Universities cannot be verified. So, please give little or no weight to comments from people that claim they graduated from IFE, but UI is better, and vice versa!

That said, the criteria for comparing universities is very unique. Universities are not companies where almost every criterion is money-related.

Rather, comparing Universities require a consideration of a wide range of issues. Some of these are considered below.

(But first, may I emphasise that U.I and OAU are arguably the best Universities in Nigeria. Thus, the Op's question is befitting of their Yale v Harvard status in Nigeria).

1. Location: UI is located in the city of Ibadan. OAU; Ile-Ife. U.I's city-location makes it very attractive to students who want a Life outside campus.

2. Infrastructure: I know from personal and professional experience that OAU's architectural design is iconic. It is better than any Nigerian Universitiy. However, OAU student halls are in a terrible state. UI has better halls of residence/better room:student ratio.

3.Entry Requirements: UI has a much more flexible and transparent admission system-It has always been. OAU has an unnecessarily tough admission process-It has always been!

4.Academic Calendar: OAU has been plagued with incessant strikes. However, U.I is also losing it's long-held reputation of having a relatively stable academic calendar. Nevertheless, UI wins hands down!

5. Tuition Fees/Administration: No comparison. Students in OAU have always paid less than their counterparts in UI. OAU wins. But regarding non-academic staff, both have poor academic and non-academic administrators. Unnecessary bureaucracy is the order of the day.

6. Quality of Teaching: By world standards, both are extremely poor. But it appears from my experience that the quality of teaching in UI is probably better. Whilst IFE relies on the 'hard work strategy' of pushing students hard to discover things for themselves, UI generally monitors their lecturers, such that lecturers are made to stick to certain standards. A more scathing summary would be that IFE adopts the 'help yourself' strategy which in turn stimulates academic rivalry among students, while UI believes in 'spoon feeding' students.

6.Lecturership: There are more IFE products that are Deans/Professor than any other University in UI. In fact, UI has a reputation of 'buying' lecturers from Ife. They will not do this if they don't believe in the quality of IFE. This is what IFE does not do. This fuels the perception that OAU is too 'arrogant'.

7.Quality of Alumni & Students: Very difficult. Although UI has obviously produced more graduates, IFE has done very well for itself since it's establishment. Thus, the two schools have produced very distinguished Nigerians.

8.Graduate Prospects: Both are great. Period.

9. Subject Strengths: This is where many people miss it. Both schools have their areas of strengths and weaknesses. For instance, UI has a better PG school-the best in the country. Also, UI's college of medicine is better because of the TH. However, IFE 'S faculty of law, Humanities and some engineering courses are clearly more 'respected' than their counterparts.

10. Notion/Perceptions: Go to IFE if you want to just read and read! You will meet like-minds: people who are ready to die from reading too much! Everything about the University is centred around pushing yourself to the limits. It's a school that will pass through you. Little wonder that they have the most passionate Alumni in Nigeria!

Go to UI if you want a less-complicated academic and social life. Everything about the University is normal and within tolerable limits. Read and pass your exams without any drama- And you will be out of UI so soon that you will have no serous emotional ties to the University!

But which is better As it is evident from the above indices, It's a tough call!

YOU MISSED OUT THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR WHICH IS QUALITY OF RESEARCH WORK AND REKNOWN SOLUTIONS GOTTEN BY WORK IN THE UNIVERSITY. PATENTS GOTTEN BY THEIR RESEARCHERS AND ETC. UNIVERSITIES ARE ESTABLISHED TO BROADEN HUMAN KNOW HOW.

OAU has a better social life
Good educational facilities - Some OAU facilities are old buh I know few are been replaced presently.
Hostel facilities is a NO NO.
OAU is the safest campus in Nigeria "quote me anywhere"
There is no Oppression whatsoever
Religion - OAU can be religious!
OAU is characterized by Unnecessary stress
OAU will groom into anything you wanna become only if you are ready.
OAU admin should be worse.
You can't beat OAU when it comes to strike buh I believe LAUTECH is about to dethrone great Ife.
and I believe OAU is the only Sane campus in Nigeria.
OAU calendar is not as slow as people think. Come to think of it, with the incessant strike we are always ranked high and stable academic calendar is part of the criteria in ranking unis. That should tell you something.

For the record about 75% of VC's in the country are OAU product.
NB* OAU, UI n others should buckle up because I see COVENANT UNIVERSITY taking over soon
LOL.OAU producing 75% of Nigerian VC s.. Ha.. U can lie o

Adjectives, which are words that describe nouns or pronouns, can also be used to make comparisons between different nouns or pronouns. When an adjective is used to compare two objects, you use the comparative form of the adjective. The comparative form is usually formed by adding an "er" to the adjective.

Does university education teaches how to speak English flawlessly? the environment you were born into and your basic education determine how fluent your grammar would be but we've seen several persons who didn't have sound basic education but are still doing well in the aspect of grammar.

Great!
Great IFE!
We don't say greatest because we are not in competition with anyone.

Just like Great Britain, NOT 'Greatest Britain' because its greatness is already established and unrivaled by any other greatness, OAU's greatness is not in competition with any other.

Thus OAU is in a competition with itself ONLY.

I don't know enough about OAU to make an informed comparison between the two.
A lot of comments are just long-held perceptions. But since I graduated from UI, I would just summarize those things I liked while I was there:

1. I did not buy hand-outs. As a matter of fact, UI had perhaps still has a policy against selling of hand-outs. Typically, I took notes in class and then went to Kenneth Dike library to write detailed notes using good textbooks. I used to hear stories of mark for handouts in other universities etc, but it never happened in UI or I did not witness it.

2. I never took a class that was taught by one lecturer; the least was two. In my first year in UI, six lecturers taught CHE 157, four of which were professors. Infact, at the end of my first year, I was taught by twenty one professors. The point I am making is, it is difficult to influence grades in UI. You would have to bribe so many professors or lecturers to do achieve that. Plus, experts tend to teach classes to the benefit of students. Since each lecturer would write at least a question, it could be daunting taking a class taught by six teachers. In some universities, you would not be taught by professors except in your final year.

3. UI exams are pretty well structured and competently administered. Never for once did I hear of any leak. Plus, exams results were promptly displayed at the end of each semester. It's extremely rare for a script to get lost or something. And at the beginning of each session, a copy of your transcript is needed to register. It is always a big surprise to me when people from other schools discover carry overs from 100 level that they didn't know until final year.

4.Lecturer to student ratio is good. There are departments where you have just twenty students (in each level) and lecturers know each by the first name. UI does not admit beyond its carrying capacity. You learn more, bond more and have room to ask questions. This factor explains why UI graduates always get mobilized for NYSC immediately after graduation.

5. Accommodation is good. In my first year, we were three in a room( Mellanby hall). In final year, only two students were in a room (D block). Electricity was stable. I remember people laughing at me when I brought stove and lantern in 100 Level. I did use the stove two or three times, but there was no need for it. Plus, each hall has a reading room which I used to my benefit. There is a common room where we watched premiership matches on Saturdays and Sundays, and movies on weekdays.

6. UI is fairly well secured. I used to go to the social sciences, faculty of agriculture or law to read at night, and would not be back to my room until 3am. You see people around, reading with their girlfriends etc. I was never for once afraid or threatened walking at night in UI. Cultism was not that pronounced, we heard about cult crises at Ibadan poly almost on weekly basis but had no impact on UI.

7. Social life is good for the what's up type. I participated in faculty politics and was into many clubs on campus. Off campus, there is a lot to explore in Ibadan. Plus, UI shares boundary with Ibadan Poly. We used to go there to bring girls.

8. Facilities were aging but still manageable. There was just one ASUU warning strike of about one or two weeks throughout my studies. There were more postgraduate students than undergraduates in my department. Fees were reasonable. In my first year, I paid 12005 plus about 2000 at the department and faculty level. Subsequent years, I paid in total about the same fees, accommodation included. Without accommodation, 4500 or thereabout for the whole session.

9.The quality of students was extremely high, almost every good student was a local champion in their respective secondary schools and the competition was real and intense. UI is a school where if you study smart and hard, you get good grades. No influence, nothing. Plus, if you don't put in the efforts and your CGPA fall below a certain value, you're asked to leave. UI publishes a tsunami list every session where students who can't cope are asked to leave. I put in the efforts and graduated with a first class honours and on top of my faculty. Many of my friends graduated with first class too. All tales of wicked lecturer from other universities were not applicable; there were hard classes with just one or two people having A but on the whole it was a great experience for me.

10. So, in things that matter like school reputation, UI is good. Academic, research and scholastic achievements: UI, as far as Nigeria is concerned, is excellent. Infact, UI is virtually a postgraduate university and you can't become one if your academic and research reputation is sub-par. Facilities: also within Nigeria, UI is still good. Quality of students: UI competes with a handful of schools for the best students Nigeria has on offer.

11. In humanities, I don't think any school in Nigeria can outperform UI in history, comparative literature, language and communication arts, linguistics etc. The same is true of core social sciences like political science, geography and economics. No school in Nigeria can easily edge out UI in core sciences like chemistry, physics and mathematics. UI's geology is also highly rated. In health sciences, UI's medicine, pharmacy and physiotherapy are highly regarded. UI engineering is good and competitive but I don't expect it to be on the same par with specialties school like FUTA et al.

All those points she mentioned about girls being wayward can be found in almost every higher institution today, even colleges of education. OAU was built after learning from the mistakes of that of UI, that's why in OAU everything is well structured and arranged . Halls of residence, academic area, School market, staff quarters etc. Unlike UI where everything is scattered.

The only aspect OAU can't compare with UI is the condition of their hostels, because UI have some rules which they enforces, like they don't allow cooking in the hostel, no squatting. These are offenses that the sanctions can be as high as rustication. So to this effect UI have been able to maintain their hostels.

Are u sure u av been to UI...this one dat u re saying UI is scattered because if u av been there u will know that Ui's physical planning is very good and well arranged.

It seems you don't understand what I wrote. I wasn't referring to speaking in English alone as they're different ways of expressing yourself. Secondly I stress on why do we think attaining university degree means you're educated. Why should one think that if you don't have university degree then you're not educated? Of what use is education when a graduate can't express himself properly e.g spell his or her, speak basic English. Lastly I want to correct that impression that background or environment has influence on the way we speak.this is not totally correct

Sorry to break it u but u re wrong and right.
firstly, UI students only move around if u re offering a non-departmental course whereas u av to move down to host department's lecture theatre.
Furthermore, UI uses Faculty lecture theatres 4 freshers for faculty courses.
Also, each department has lecture rooms for each level.
