Nony1: You will have to enter computer village and search for this spec. Its pretty tough to get exactly what you want tho, so I will advice you prioritize the key specs like processor and RAM, then you can settle for or upgrade other specs. |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by Dsdada: 10:54pm On Dec 27, 2016 |
I just installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS distro on my Windows 10 OS Dell Inspiron Machine (upgraded from Windows 8.1 OS). My intention was to dual boot and be able to choose either Windows or Ubuntu at startup. I have been able to achieve my goal, albeit with some challenges: 1. I am unable to boot into Windows OS except I use the boot menu by pressing F12 at startup and use the Windows boot manager. If I don't do this, I'll automatically boot into Ubuntu. Pointers: I had to disable UEFI and use Legacy to be able to boot from USB to install Ubuntu. So Windows is set to boot from UEFI and Ubuntu from Legacy. 2. My battery reads "charging 0%" and as soon as the power source goes off, the laptop goes off too. I have tried recalibrating the battery, re-installing the battery driver and updating the driver, all to no avail. My questions: A. How do I get to be able to choose the OS to boot from without using the boot menu? What do I need to do to make Ubuntu boot mode to change to UEFI (I understand that both OSes must be set to boot same way. I erroneously installed Ubuntu using Legacy instead of UEFI). B. What else can I do to get my battery back? Thank you in advance. 1 Like 1 Share |

Try disabling legacy boot |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Dsdada: 7:42pm On Dec 30, 2016 |
jaeyikeh: That will make my machine boot automatically to Windows. I need a repair that will enable me to be able to choose the OS I want without having to use the boot menu in F12 or F2 |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 9:35am On Dec 31, 2016 |
Dsdada: It's obvious the answer is to reinstall Ubuntu in UEFI..... Wipe the Ubuntu partition in Windows. Reclaim the space. Make sure Windows is working fine as a sole boot in UEFI Then try Install Ubuntu in UEFI PS: u need to disable fast startup and properly shutdown windows before installing Ubuntu... 1 Like |

Dsdada: I used this for my OpenSuSe Leap 42 sometime late 2015 and it's still working. https://tweakhound.com/2015/11/04/dual-boot-opensuse-leap-and-windows-10-uefi/ It should work for Ubuntu 1 Like |

Guys am in a fix !!! I recently installed NTFS 3g to help mount an additional drive I wanted to add To my PC Since then my OS refused to boot It gives an output like this each time I turn it on "Well com e to emergency mode" After logging in type "journancl -xb" To view system logs "Systemctl reboot " to reboot "Systemctl default " to try again To boot into default mode Give root pass word for maintenance (Or press control -D to continue) Need info on what to do next |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Craigston: 7:56pm On Jan 20, 2017 |
purplekayc:Try a manual fsck on all related partitions. Did your PC go off without a proper shutdown? |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by purplekayc(m): 11:37pm On Jan 20, 2017 |
Craigston:no it didn't I noticed it started behaving like this after I used the software |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Craigston: 1:15am On Jan 21, 2017 |
purplekayc:Give root password for maintenance, unmount your root and home partitions. Then type in 'fsck /dev/sda1', 'fsck /dev/sda3', replacing sda1 and sda3 with the partition labels for your corresponding partitions. This process will attempt to correct filesystem errors. If you are prompted to accept an action, just enter 'y'. 1 Like |

ww purplekayc:Can we get descriptive error reports and screenshots? |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 5:33am On Jan 23, 2017 |
purplekayc: Just to be clear, what OS is this? NTFS 3G comes installed on Ubuntu by default so why did you install? And is it a dual boot? If it is a dual boot, boot windows, turn off fast startup. Then open elevated CMD and use this to shut down. shutdown /s /t 5 Ideally you should use a live USB or CD to run fsck /dev/sd* on all partitions on the hard drive. For the windows ntfs partitions use sudo ntfsfix /dev/sda* * = drive number. Check drive partitions with Sudo - i fdisk -l Try booting Ubuntu again and this time do systemctl default if there's still error. |

Guys, I just moved to elementary os this afternoon.. Freaking lightweight and works. It's based on Ubuntu anyways. 2 Likes 1 Share |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Craigston: 8:48pm On Jan 31, 2017 |
Jregz:Xubuntu feels lightweight too. I really need better power management and battery life. |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Nobody: 3:15am On Feb 01, 2017 |
Craigston: Edit - I saw kubuntu instead of Xubuntu Old - - I don't like KDE a tiny bit. NEW - oh Xubuntu is lightweight too but I can't trade good ui for anything else. A friend told me MATE desktop is pretty lightweight though. 1 Like 1 Share |
