Well, check out these quarter final pairings... Hard to call isn't it? wink

Egypt stand a good chance of winning it if they scale past a very good moroccan side.

Burkina Faso vs Tunisia

Senegal vs Cameroun

DR Congo vs Ghana

Egypt vs Morocco

This Afcon is very interesting.... *rubs palms*

Let me call it:

Burkina Faso vs Tunisia

Senegal vs Cameroun

DR Congo vs Ghana - this is a tough one, but I smell an upset here.

Egypt vs Morocco

Actually, it's all quite tough to call - because, Cameroun tend to over achieve. Morocco is quite a good team despite losing to Senegal. And Ghana v DRC is a toss up. DRC is more exciting to watch but Ghana might just nick it with experience and a good coach. Tough calls all!

Looollll.... "Tough calls all!" Indeed.... grin

But I will watch this space shaa... Your prediction might happen and if it does especially for Senegal vs Cameroun, then I will send Yara Yara to go deliver the latest HBP pills to Sir Joseph... grin grin grin

Tunisia are favorites in their tie but Burkina faso can surprise.

Senegal are favorites but history favors Cameroun.

DR Congo are in imperious form at the moment but Ghana edges them in pedigree. (Between them lies 6 AFCON titles... Ghana-4, DRC-2)

No favorites in north african derbies so it could go either way for Egypt or Morocco.

Sir..... Let's see how it goes... wink

I pray these major actors really get better as time goes.

In all, I think I like this better. Actually Nacho did play from the right sometimes during tactical switches at UAE 3+ years ago while Yahaya drifted to the middle... So yeah, he surely can coz of his sweet left foot. More like an inverted right wing forward akin to messi but uhmmm... Nacho needs lots of work to reach that level shaa.

Well, it's the rise of Africa's next super dominant force. A lot are waxing lyrical coz of Senegal at this Afcon but I'm saying Africa will see a much better and stronger side in our team when the Super Eagles' current generation matures a bit more within the next two years.

Good one there Sir Terzurum5.... smiley

Remember I spoke about this on the previous Super Eagles thread before we started this Dawn of a new era thread. smiley

I said we will witness different metamorphosis stages of our darling team as Post-Russia 2018 will lead to Afcon 2019, Afcon 2021 and Qatar 2022 and beyond (and each event must have their unique threads so that we keep things about out team well organised and well documented in this section for future references for upcoming generations).

I think we have two options:

1). Modify the topic slightly to include "Afcon 2019" as the afcon 2019 journey begins soon this year with the qualifiers

After which, post-Russia we create a brand new thread for the Afcon 2019 exclusively. After which more threads follow.

2). Create the Afcon 2019 thread "now" strictly for just nations cup news with respect to the Super Eagles as Russia 2018 marks our super eagles new generation "baptism of fire" on the international stage while Afcon 2019 which comes after Russia 2018 represents how far the team have matured in its quest to rule Africa for the next couple of years.

Either way, we must be out to organise the archival threads here on NL sports. That should be our goal so as not to cluster the information all into just one place.

As usual the final decisions rest with the elders and Super OPs::::

well, I'm in support of your first opinion. I personally, doesn't see any reason in creating multiple threads for the SE mostly this project not forgetting that we already have other threads created by our wonderful OPs for other NTs(male n female) not excluding d grade teams.

The present thread's caption is ok and should only be modified if need be...
But I think this thread has once hit the front page-and from my observation such threads' name can't be modified(I stand to be corrected)

Super Eagles Legend Odemwingie Advises
Celtic Target Onyekuru , Blast Eupen Over Striker’s Future

Former Nigeria forward Peter Osaze Odemwingie has hit out at the way Belgian side Eupen are treating 19 year old Nigerian forward Henry Onyekuru, who is wanted by Scottish side Celtic.

Onyekuru was spotted playing in Nigeria and was brought to the Aspire Academy in Senegal before linking up with Eupen who are owned by the Aspire Zone Foundation, in the summer of 2015.

Onyekuru has been a revelation for Eupen since his arrival in Belgium helping them win promotion to the top flight in his first season and he has continued to flourish this season.

The teenage talent has spoken to one of Nigeria’s most successful players Peter Odemwingie to ask for his advice on what should be his next move in his career.

“I have spoken to Henry as he phoned me for
advice and I said to him just think of yourself as
Aspire did not think of the hundreds of kids
discarded by Aspire and who now find themselves back in Nigeria,” Odemwingie told ESPN FC.

“The interest in Henry is great news for Henry,
but I am disappointed about the other boys who went to the Aspire Academy and now find
themselves on the streets of Lagos.”

"I Am Coming Back Stronger"-Success

FRONT-MAN IS HOPING TO PUT HIS INJURY TROUBLES BEHIND HIM AS HE EDGES CLOSER TO A WATFORD RETURN

With fingers firmly crossed, the medical
department could be ready to integrate Isaac
Success back into full training on Monday in what would be most welcome news for the Hornets.

The barrel-chested forward has made just two
substitute appearances in the last 15 matches
and has only started one game this season, away at Middlesbrough, largely because of a
troublesome hamstring.

The explosive and unpredictable nature of his
play has been sorely missed but there looks like
there is finally some light at the end of what
looked a very long and dark tunnel.

"I'm good and I'm getting better," Success said
yesterday. "I'm hoping to train with the team on
Monday."

Success is one of the more laid back, laissez faire members of the squad so an update from new medical director Luca Gatteschi is probably wise before fans indulge in any chicken counting.

"It's possible,"Gatteschi said. "The next two days are crucial. We are doing specific work on
Success, both in the physio room and on the
pitch and in the gym to avoid the risk of another injury.

"He's working well. The last two days he's had a
good training load and been running without any problem. We have to test more in the next two days with very specific workloads and change of direction. We are very close to the end."

Isaac Success working hard at the Hornets' UCL training ground

Why, fans have asked, has Success played back-to-back games in October and then missed the next seven, and then been absent for a further six following two successive appearances in December?

"The injury is the problem but the problem doesn't always start at the site of the
injury," said Gatteschi.

"You have to balance better all the body. All the
muscles work together and we have tried to work on the injury but also balance better the muscles and the way he moves. We have done some good work in this area.

“We are using different workloads every day to
avoid overload: running on the treadmill, on the
bike and running at different speeds outside. We need to strengthen the central core and the
upper body muscles."

Success is a bundle of muscle and a wrecking ball of a forward so does his physique and all-action style contribute to his propensity for injury.

"When a player has a lot of power and is very
explosive they use a lot of force, so the muscle
and tendon need to sustain a very high
workload," Gatteschi said.

"It's better to have a high level of power, though.

It's been frustrating but we are really close to the result. It's just important to avoid problems in the last days. We are near."

Success takes on Pablo Zabaleta at Manchester City in December

Success is chomping at the bit to return and produce the sort of performances that turned Pablo Zabaleta inside out at the Etihad before Christmas. **Ouch!!! Take that Sir TheGoodJoe!!! Hahahahahaha.... grin grin grin **

"It's frustrating as I'm trying to make my name in the Premier League," Success said. "I haven't had the chance to impress. Everyone knows my ability but I've got more to offer to the fans and the team."

There was even talk that the luckless Success,
who it's easy to forget is still only 21, had been
struck by some African curse.

"I heard that," he joked. "I'm a Christian and I
really don't believe in that. Injury comes when
you are a professional and most of the time hard work can help prevent it. I've really started
working harder than before to prevent injuries. I
believe I'm coming back stronger and stronger
than before."

I believe in the long run, Iwobi's future as a star player lies in the attacking third as an AMF (main), LMF/LWF (side).

But his other attributes does show he could be at home in the middle third also as a CMF/midfield anchor. **Interesting discourse** smiley
.......................................................................
Could Iwobi be Arsenal's new Cazorla?

By Simon Rose

He's more suited than you might think

With Santi Cazorla having more Achilles surgery, putting him at real risk of missing the rest of the season again, thoughts have inevitably turned to the question of who can replace him for Arsenal long term. Jack Wilshere has been mooted as a potential successor, partly as a reason for bringing him back from Bournemouth for a fresh contract. But the nearest I see to a Cazorla type already at the club is Alex Iwobi.

Santi missed much of last season and Arsenal
suffered for it. His ability to set the pace of
Arsenal’s play from deep midfield meant
immediately that last season’s title hopes
disappeared with his absence. Arsenal are just not the same without Cazorla. Cut to this season and more long-term absence from Cazorla can only mean one thing: Arsenal struggle to control
midfield.

Santi is our metronome. Not our gnome thanks, our metronome! He sets the pace and tone to our play, as he is two-footed and that offers exceptional versatility. Santi has such sound natural technique that he is calm on the ball and that allows him to retrieve possession and recycle it to teammates, for Arsenal to keep possession and get back on the attack. To replace Santi, we need someone else who can do the same and that is not easy to find.

Thiago Alcantara feels like a possible fit but I don’t see enough of his game to know if he is two-footed and frankly he is at Bayern Munich and would have little motivation to leave there to join Arsenal. Toni Kroos feels like he'd settle into our side nicely, but would he leave Real Madrid for us?

Ozil did, so there has to be potential, especially if Ozil stays. But the easiest option to replace Santi long term surely comes from within.

I like Wilshere and I do hope that he has a future at this club, but I’m not sure anyone can say for sure what type of midfielder Wilshere is.

Some like Wilshere as a deep-lying retriever, some prefer Jack as a box-to-box wizard weaving through the lines. Some see Jack as a number 10 and bemoan that he gets little chance there due to Mesut Ozil.

Personally I think part of Jack’s struggle at
Arsenal over the years, apart from injuries, is that his sheer versatility weakens his case in any particular position. He’s never staked a vehement claim for any position.

Personally I think Wilshere is too one-footed to
replace Santi. Cazorla – and Arteta before him –
has made the Arsenal anchor role one of quick
distribution. Wilshere holds onto the ball just that bit too long. That in itself has seen him draw late challenges, incurring long-term injuries of his own. Not only am I unconvinced that Jack could replace Santi as a player, but I doubt he would stay fit enough for long enough to hold onto the role in any case.

Iwobi, on the other hand, ticks all the boxes for me. If your first thought is that Iwobi is purely an attacking player – as a winger or a number 10 – and hence not suited to an anchor role, don’t forget that is exactly how we first played Cazorla.

I wasn’t enamoured when Santi first shifted
deeper in the team, as I felt that he and we would lose too much from him offensively. But Santi brought his technique and intelligence to the anchor role and settled into it. For me, the same could be said of Iwobi.

Iwobi shares Santi’s gift for two-footed intelligent technique. He can shift the ball between both feet with ease. He is comfortable on either side and can create or recycle the ball as a natural.

While I wouldn’t want to lose Iwobi as a versatile attacking force I didn’t want to lose that from Santi either, yet there is no doubt that Cazorla has been a success played from deep, opening up attacking paths in his wake for others in front of him, including Iwobi. While Alex might see his future in the attacking third of the field, he could be beautifully adept in the middle third.

To be two-footed means to offer 360 degrees of
flexibility. The only player Arsenal currently have who rivals Cazorla for being equally balanced and comfortable on either foot is Alex Iwobi.

He may want a future as an attacking force and that may yet be where he continues to flourish, with Arsenal locating a different long-term successor to Santi via the transfer market. But I can see the ideal versatility in Iwobi to be a fantastic midfield anchor, using his elegant technique to recycle the ball in all directions, to set the pace from deep into perceptive and incisive attacks.

From Belgium: Here's the price for Nigerian
wonder-kid & Liverpool target Onyekuru

Just days after it was revealed that both Liverpool and Celtic were chasing highly-rated Nigerian striker Henry Onyekuru, reports from Belgium have now emerged stating that his current club, AS Eupen, have put a €3 million asking price on the youngsters head.

The 19-year-old has been causing a stir in
Belgium, where he currently plays his football,
and his performances for the newly promoted
side, have had scouts from all around Europe
queuing up to watch him perform.

The Scottish giants are even reported to have had a bid turned down but this has yet to be
confirmed by anyone at Parkhead. AS Eupen are owned by Qatar Sports Group who also control French giants Paris Saint-Germain. The Belgian outfit have invested heavily in their youth program and Onyekuru is set to be one of the first beneficiaries of that program.

Still a raw talent despite his rise to stardom,
Onyekuru does not lack self-belief when he
claimed in a recent interview that; “I believe I
have the level to one day play in the Champions
League.”

Osimhen goes under knife again, out for
weeks

Wolfsburg’s new signing, Victor Osimhen has
gone under the knife again as the Nigerian will
not be available to head-coach Valérien Ismaël for the up-coming games.

The 18-year-old Nigerian had to undergo an
arthroscopic procedure on his right knee on
Wednesday, in order to treat a strain related
meniscus problem which had occurred during
training.

“Victor came through the procedure without
problems. He will now go through a specialised
rehabilitation programme and he will not be
available to us for the duration. The decisive
factor is that he is built up again step-by-step, to ensure there is no recurrence of the
problem,” explained VfL head-coach Valérien
Ismaël.

I wish you the best in your project works and if you still need a little help please feel free to ask.

I saw no need replying the mentions after seeing them late as some of the ogas in the house (especially Sirs Joseph1013, TheGoodJoe, Goldfish80, et al) had done good justice to suggestions about your project work.

Rohr shops for wing-backs

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has started
looking for big, strong and reliable wing backs for the Nigerian side who he hopes will stop the
Indomitable Lions from beating Nigeria inside the Nest of Champions Stadium in Uyo, in one of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Disclosing this startling revelation to SportingLife on Thursday night from Abuja, technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Bitrus Bewarang stated that Rohr informed him that the Cameroonians were very fast on the right and left flanks, adding that: “I have been talking with the manager on telephone and he said that he needs to scout for right and left wing backs for the Eagles defence. He didn’t tell me those he has in
mind. But I can tell you that he is very serious in his search for the right blend of players to stop the Indomitable Lions in Uyo, when both
countries meet.

“I can also tell you that Rohr is doing two jobs
while in Gabon. First, the manager is monitoring
our group opponents in the Russia 2018 world
Cup and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Secondly, he is taking time out to watch our
players, especially the youngers ones as they play for their European leagues sides weekly. In fact, Rohr has prioritised the 2019 Africa Çup of
Nations and will stop at nothing to ensure that
Nigeria’s flag is hoisted among the comity of
nations at the next Africa Cup of Nations.”

Asked when Rohr will be returning to Nigeria,
Bewarang stressed that the German didn’t
divulge when he will be back pointing out that:

”It is important that we allow the manager shop for the right calibre of players to actualise his plans to give Nigeria the two qualification tickets. On our part, we are closely watching the domestic league matches and picking those who can fight for shirts with the foriegn legion
whenever the camp opens in Abuja for the game against South Africa in Uyo.”

Oduamadi To Join Israel’s Petah Tikva In
Seventh Loan Deal

AC Milan's Nigerian winger Nnamdi Oduamadi will join Israeli club Maccabi Petah Tikva FC on a six-month loan deal, Completesportsnigeria.com
reports.

Oduamadi has agreed personal terms with the
third-placed team in the Israeli top flight and will join them in the coming days barring any last minute hitches.

If the deal is concluded, it will be his seventh loan spell away from AC Milan.

The 25-year-old departs the Milanelo just as
M'Baye Niang who joined English Premiership side Watford on Thursday following the impending arrival of Genoa’s Lucas Ocampos.

Gerard Deulofeu also arrived at AC Milan on loan from English club Everton.

“Still waiting for some confirmation from Milan but the deal should be confirmed soon,” Oduamadi told Completesportsnigeria.com.

Oduamadi spent the whole of last season at
Finnish club HJK Helsinki where he made 34
appearances, scoring seven goals providing six
assists.

The Nigeria international has had loan spells at
Varese, US Latina, Brescia, Crotone and Torino.

"I Am Coming Back Stronger"-Success

With fingers firmly crossed, the medical
department could be ready to integrate Isaac
Success back into full training on Monday in what would be most welcome news for the Hornets.

The barrel-chested forward has made just two
substitute appearances in the last 15 matches
and has only started one game this season, away at Middlesbrough, largely because of a
troublesome hamstring.

The explosive and unpredictable nature of his
play has been sorely missed but there looks like
there is finally some light at the end of what
looked a very long and dark tunnel.

"I'm good and I'm getting better," Success said
yesterday. "I'm hoping to train with the team on
Monday."

Success is one of the more laid back, laissez faire members of the squad so an update from new medical director Luca Gatteschi is probably wise before fans indulge in any chicken counting.

"It's possible,"Gatteschi said. "The next two days are crucial. We are doing specific work on
Success, both in the physio room and on the
pitch and in the gym to avoid the risk of another injury.

"He's working well. The last two days he's had a
good training load and been running without any problem. We have to test more in the next two days with very specific workloads and change of direction. We are very close to the end."

Nice news coming from Watford and it seems his doctors know what they are doing. Success needs to work on his weight. He is too heavy and still moves fast. The news shows the doctors are working on it and I hope they sort it out. Apart from Success being a Bundle of Muscles, He is a Bundle of Talent. The tip of the left side of the League Of Extra-Ordinary Hitmen.

Glad he is close to putting his injuries behind him but he should stay clear of Zabaleta. Zabaleta is not Success Mate. Success should learn to respect his elders.

League.”

I hope Celtic comes back with an improved bid. That will sort things out.
