I transferred funds to friends that had GTB accounts and were not using the $100 a month limit that their bank let them have. They were gracious enough to not turn it into a business transaction so they let me use the bank's rate of N320 to $1. I believe my UofH app fee was $75 which came out as N24000 but I transferred N24,500. Some of them gave me the card details i.e card number and expiry date, billing address and name of card owner while some others requested the links and paid it for me.

At the end of the day it was relatively cheaper that way and it saved me from asking family members over there for help.

Well, I paid sometimes last year when exchange rate was friendly 270/$1 I guess with access bank, there system automatically picks ur home address which u entered during application as billing address when u want to pay. As long as u don't change it regardless of whose atm u r using, u should be fine. That was the challenge i had last time

I thought this was already responded to.

If the person in question was considering UK then the GRE would be unnecessary. If that was a typo and the person was referring to USA then he may need to retake the GRE for the sake of the intended course he is applying to which is Quantitative dependent. I believe SirRiddy said that the mathematics dept of K.S.U fully funds all the MSc and PhD applicants.

Good morning ,
Kudos to the movers of this thread !
I celebrate you !

Pls , I am getting a bit confused about the issue of TOEFL.

1. Is TOEFL Compulsory for US schools?

2. Since our official language is English, aren't exempted from TOEFL?

3. Are there TOEFL exemption criteria for international students ( other than some whites) ?

More exposition on this and other questions unasked will clear my confusions.

You shouldn't be confused, and for just reasons.
First, not all schools require prospective graduate students from Nigeria to take the TOEFL as a test of their competence in English language. Some schools waive TOEFL for admission decision namely Cleveland state university Ohio, University of Colorado Boulder etc.
Second, all you need to know about entry requirement for both local and international students is clearly stated in the school's webpage. More so you can always ask the graduate coordinator of your intended program to expound on any obscure area.
Third, though TOEFL isn't required by every school, it is advised that every prospective graduate student take it. It isn't so difficult, infact believe me when I say it's actually one of the easiest standardized test you'll ever take. Although it's expensive, the benefits that accrues from taking the test far outweigh any and all quagmire that taking the test may bring.
I'll urge you to take the test if it won't be so much of an inconvenience so in the future you don't in hindsight wished you had taken it.
Wish you success in your endeavors.

Did you write the TOEFL? If you want a GA position in Mathematics which is usually in teaching, endeavor to write the TOEFL.

Also, based on your quant score, what you are seeking will be difficult because you are expected to score high as a mathematics graduate.
From my observation, you have two options, either you rewrite the GRE and score high in the quants or you have tuition for your first year. You might be lucky to get a GA in your second year if you work hard.

In fact, most graduate programs in Maths require the subject test. Hence for schools that do not require the Subject test, you need to score high on the Quant Section. If you really need funding, please rewrite the General GRE and write the TOEFL and score high on the speaking section.

Please, this time around, do not do a "crash GRE exam".

The gurus in the house will add their knowledge later. All the best.

@Sbrainy, I read from The General USA Student Visa thread that you can apply to Missouri State University Mathematics Masters without the GRE. It was written there that they fund all their Mathematics graduate student. I think you should check out the school.

All the best.

For now, I can't specifically recommend schools that are not stingy with funding as I am also an applicant for Fall 2017. Your profile is okay. I'd suggest you search for schools that offers your course (with your desired specialization). You could narrow down your search to schools whose GRE requirements are close to your scores.

Also, check the research expenditure of schools/faculty.....I noticed that schools with higher research expenditure tend to give more funding to their students. Send emails to the graduate coordinator of the schools selected; certainly, most won't respond to your emails and few will respond. Strategize further based on responses received..... Send as many emails as you can; there's no fee for emailing the grad coord at least wink wink

During my search, I stumbled on a copy of Engineering School ranking from US News and World Report, and it was quite helpful in making my selection (I have attached a copy here for your use). I applied to very few top schools considering my 'not-stellar' profile, and turned more applications to the schools down the ranking while believing God for my testimony soon smiley smiley

Whichever strategy u wanna stick to, act fast because the priority deadline for most average school is around mid Feb 2017.

I wish you all d best in your application.

Good day everybody,

Having a not-so-slight issue here. KSU is asking for my M.Sc certificate. The certificate is not ready and won't be ready anytime soon. They said they won't begin to evaluate my credentials until they have it. Here's the fraught correspondence exchanged with the admissions counselor.

Dear Towbaynah,

Thank you for submitting your materials. However, we still need your degree certificates from both of your degree certificates. These documents are needed to complete the credential evaluation. The application remains incomplete until this is received.

Remember, submitted documents must be scanned copies of the originals. We cannot accept documents that have been downloaded from the internet or are otherwise unofficial.

Please send your documents to Bleep@kent.edu as a PDF attachment.

Best regards,

Bleep

**********************************************************

Hi Bleep,

Thank you for notifying me on time about my missing documents.

The certificate for my M.Sc. Degree is not ready for collection, rather a notification of result was issued pending the time the certificate is prepared.

Thus, I have attached a PDF of my Bachelor's degree certificate and the notification of result for my Masters degree.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Towbaynah

**********************************************************

Dear Towbaynah,

Thank you for submitting these documents. However, we still need an official degree certificate for your Master’s degree, not just a notification of higher degree result.

Once this is received we will be able to complete your credential evaluation.

Best,

Bleep

**********************************************************

What should I do about this? This is really disturbing. Here I was thinking I've completed everything about application.
I think you should be unequivocal in your reply that it takes a number of years for degree certificate to come out. Let them know this is a developing country where things don't run so smoothly. Let them know they you wouldn't be able to provide it because it is in existence yet. Maybe you can get a letter from the registrar of your school to provide further evidence.

By the way, was the degree certificate listed as part of applicatios documents in their requirements?

Yeah it was listed but it wasn't mandatory. Here's how it appeared on their website;

"College Graduation Certificate/Diploma if already issued (Certified English translation and original language)"

I felt my transcript would cover for it. Not so much, apparently. It's going to be a fairly long shot seeking to get a letter from my registrar. I actually intend calling them at Kent in about an hour from now. Then, I'll explain to them, along the lines of what you suggested, the exact situation of things. Thanks, mate.

At this day and age a school is asking for certificate over the transcript? That is new and so far, I have no respect for such schools.

I agree with Time2Smile and I think you should be more resolute in your email. The official transcript is always better than the certificate because it has the individual courses written on it, grades, CGPA and the class of degree- virtually all and more than you could get in the certificate and that should be communicated to them.
