Thanks for this. Computer test or is then.

djPyper:

Oh sorry I didnt state my scores earlier, the scores were Q153 V159 AWA 4.5
- it took about almost four weeks from the date of my exams to receive the scores

- From my experience i'll say it doesnt even make sense to write the paper test except you're uncomfortable with computers. Let me explain, the questions were very easy but after scaling and equating with other test takers my scores came out lower than expected...to get very high scores on the paper test, you have to answer the questions almost perfectly, whereas for the computer test, its computer adaptive so if you do fairly well in the easy section and the harder section that comes up next your scores will be quite high.

Lemme check if they use uploaded transcripts so I'll apply.
Apply fast oo.....I didn't send any application material including transcript via mail. Everything was uploaded online.

My guy said 3.583. Why not 3.583388946 lol.

Answering this question is difficult because overall it is just there. Just there, meaning above average but not stellar. Do not be crestfallen however. Several things go into GPAs.

1. Your final 2 years in which you did core courses.
2. General improvement in the GPA from year 1- final.
3. Consistency
4. Core courses related to the PhD or MSc you are considering.

For instance, someone with a 3.5 who hopes to do some research in Interfacial Fluid Mechanics and got As in Transport Phenomena and Basic fluid mechanics courses while in Undegrad may appear to have a better transcript than a 4-Pter who perhaps got Cs there. Also, someone who had say 1.5 from years 1-3 but had 5.0 in 4 & 5 (thus landing on a 3.5) may appeal more to the evaluation committee than someone who blitzed through year 1-3 and wobbled at the final 2 years thus landing at 4.0. As you can see, a lot of things go into it that's why higher GPAs seem to be favored (as it guarantees more As in core courses than other wise).

I feel the need to add at this juncture that other parts of one's application could be the deciding factor even ahead of a GPA. If a renowned Prof in your field recommends you to a school whose committee members are well-known to him, his LOR would be weightier than an unknown Prof saying you are the best thing since sliced bread. Additionally, having cognate research experience like publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals and making presentations in conferences appear to be the best bet towards gaining admission into graduate school.

In a nutshell, don't bother about the GPA as you cannot change it (even if it is not bad). Just work on the other aspects of your application.
thanks a lot...I just hope I get a high gre score to boost my application, my best gpa was in final year(4.428),I just hope that will help

If you are aiming for Fall 2017, then is pretty late and time is running out fast. I advice you to apply immediately and inform the schools you are yet to write GRE but have chosen a test date.

Check msinus.com, Edulix.com to find the list of schools that are still accepting applications. I don't know your profile but funding is generally easier for PhD compared to MSc. Check the previous 5 pages of this thread where a number of engineering hopefuls discussed their application.

Reading your previous post I can see you have written GRE before, What are you doing differently this time around to get a better score?

Good morning guys, trust all is well...one thing that has been a thorn in my rose is trying to do tasking things simultaneously, I therefore come around looking unserious as if I haven't planned, truth is that I haven't planned well.

I intended writing the GRE in January, then I shifted it to like April, now I'm shifting to June/July, reason is that I'm caught btw finishing a professional exam in ICAN or not. I have made it clear now that I intend to finish up with ICAN (have 6 papers left, will write 2 in MAY), I plan to prepare for both anyways, but with more focus for ICAN and when that is through I can then up my GRE game for the next few weeks.

I'm saying all these because I believe I'm not the only one in these shoes, whatever it is, just take things one at a time. It's not easy but TRY!!

Yap. you are right, I noted that from previous posts, particular that of the bros who also studied chemical engineering with KFUPM MS scholarship. meanwhile, I was also provisionally admitted at KFUPM, Saudi with only Gre scores condition to join for fall, 2017.

I am as well considering some US schools. I have mailed Mississippi state university graduate coordinator with reply that he currently did no know of anyone needing a MS student at this time( does that imply that I should not border applying?). additionally, I have stevens institute of technolgy as per my writing of Gre next month because they have graduate assistanships (which the deadline to be considered for that is March 1st) but yet to get their response.
So, the need for some other US schools. My undergraduate GPA 4.437/5.0( WES conversion 3.62/4.0, IELTS scores 6.5 band).
Thanks.

Good afternoon everyone, I need your opinions on this issue. I studied Building in the University of Lagos and I'm working towards doing my masters soon in Construction engineering and management which happens to be a specialization in the department of civil engineering. I was opportune to take a wide variety of civil courses during my undergrad including structural analysis, structural design, mechanics of materials, soil mechanics, foundation engineering and fluid mechanics which I had Bs save for fluid mechanics. I want your advice on if I'll be considered for the course despite the fact that my bachelors degree is in Building and not Civil engineering. I'll be so glad if I can get your opinions, it will mean a lot.

Google. Call the numbers and talk to a rep. Take note, that you would need to create a GRE or TOEFL account on ets.org before then so the process will be seamless. I recommend calling them tomorrow morning say 8-12 (noon)

I believe you would be but if you are in doubt you should go to the website of the your intended schools and get the email address of the grad coordinator. Contact him/her and ask this question. They would respond.

Hi guys, I have been following this thread for a while and I must say that I'm impressed with the love and friendship here. Kudos to you all. I need clarification on an issue. If I take the GRE before starting the online application, should I send the scores to my preferred schools at the test centre or should I send scores after starting the online application?

Studying for Gre is so diffficult , I'm currently serving in a construction company, I leave home early and return late , I try my best to study at work when I'm less busy and I make sure to study intensively on weekends. I feel I'm not doing enough, I'm planning to apply in 2018 and I want to score above 320. Can anyone advice me as to how to move forward and do better?

Send at the test centre. The department still knows how to link the official copy with the online application. If you send the scores after the application you'd pay $27 for each score report which is above N14k.

GRE is 50k including a free Kaplan material
TOEFL is 45k including a free Kaplan material and a one month free lecture(every Tuesdays and Thursdays).

All the best with your process.

Studying may have little impact but early preparation has helped you especially since you are considering 2018. I would recommend you gave yourself 4/5months of less study and more full-length tests i.e both essays and VQVQE as oft as possible. Full-length tests trump any other preparatory methods.

When I was preparing for the GRE I got near perfect scores in my Q (PowerPrep Test 1 169 and one of the Kaplan Tests 170) but that was because I skipped the verbal and did it at a later time. Preparing for the GRE that way won't help you because it would give you a false sense of security seeing that I was full of energy when I tested myself both times. If I had done the Full-length tests I am sure I may have scored lower because I would have been tired by the 2nd Q especially if one ends up getting 3 Qs and not know which one is the experimental.

Practising Full-length tests will enable you test your endurance the same way it would be on the actual day and if you discipline yourself during the practice you won't feel the impact of the grueling 4hr exams on the D-day.

Apart from helping with one's endurance level Full-length tests actually programme you to devise strategies that could help on test day and show you topics that you may not be fully-cognizant of, better than just pouring through various books trying to understand the intricacies. For instance, some people skip the first 8 Q questions that are quantitative comparisons and tackle them last.

Finally, Full-length tests are near perfect indicators of whether you are close to the 320+ target score. Forget Adrenaline, if you are not hitting 320+ during your practice, chances are, you won't hit it on the main day. In fact, one's score could improve or reduce by a margin of 4 on both sides during the main day. Everyone I know that hit say 160+ in the V had done so consistently during practice. Same goes for the Q. Obviously there would be outliers to this theory but the evidence is clear even on this thread. The guy who hit 330 early January said he was getting above 160 in his V throughout his practice and I believe he hit 165 in one of his PowerPrep V's which he replicated on the main day. Same goes for the guy that had 167 in his Q.

If you wanted to "hoodwink" the VO during the visa interview GRE would be better. But even in that case, try not to score very low. Of course, you could always still say it was waived even if you wrote it, but you want them to see you as a serious student.

IELTS is not that popular in the US.
