Henry24o:Air support varies according to situations to determine if they are primary or secondary in as much as the goal of neutralising your enemy is achieved, yes it cost more however no amount of investment can bring back the life of your personnel should such ocvohr. In this case I believe as soon as the enemy was spotted, action should have been the taken asap.it is glearing they were outgunned via high caliber weapons I believe they were aware of from the drone footage.at least 30mm staging sef would have discouraged them from attacking 1 Like |

Henry24o: What about Kenya F-5? Can't b they be configured to drop free bombs like our A-jets? About man pads, they should invest in ECM. |

MikeCZA: base defense must be stepped up albit this time little more emphasis must be put on how to stop vbieds from coming close , since it is clear even if the vbieds r stopped they pack enough power to damage if near to the base/soldiers. also good idea to equip with inexpensive LAW type weapons. even the ancient malyukta ATGM will do remote controlled mines (buried deep) , spikes on probable/improbable ingress points r good option. point being like the medieval times these terrorists r using the vbieds to act as shock/breaching weapons , if u manage to disable the vbieds from far half the battle in base defense is won (kind of) 2 Likes |

Conventional warfare tactics are long abandoned by most groups. The Kenyan base attacks I'll bet is no different to the type of engagements the US military encountered in Afghanistan. Worse is the Americans were sometimes camped in frontline bases in very close proximity to enemy troops enduring probing attacks round the clock. Suicide and waves of attacks to try overwhelm bases, the modus operandi of this terrorists groups should be anticipated already. In Africa, probably due to funding, troops only make do with sandbags and digging trenches. It ends up inadequate. Blame the army hierarchy for not having the foresight, insufficient or outdated practices to combat new threats. Rigid mentality and doctrine would only mean they allow unnecessary deaths. Worse is after multiple scenarios, there remains very little uptake of lessons and innovation in some African armed forces. 1 Like |

tdayof: The L-15 ATF (the sub-sonic version) is the sort of jet they need. The F-5's are old. They drop free fall bombs, and have participated in operations in Somalia. The fact is, they aren't good enough. Even with ECM, Russian MI-17s carry the President S ECM, one of the worlds most advanced ECMs but a couple Russian helicopters have been shot down regardless of President S. |
