Education is over rated in Nigeria joor! I went to a friend's jamb tutorial class and I was sad because the students think life is the way they picture it. I never realised all these things till I finished the time wasting NYSC last year. Those that have graduated years back are still struggling with their life not to talk of recent graduates. The only thing that is important is to have a hand work.
Btw, you think having connection is an easy task? You think these top people want to help anybody aside from their children?
You better wake up! If you are not from a wealthy family, just work and and slowly and gradually you will get there...but if you are from a rich background, just count your blessings.
Finally if you have any opportunity to leave this country RUN and don't look back angry

Another shallow epistle from a person who has not thought outside the box. sad You think simply leaving this country is the key to success? Go abroad and see how many Nigerians are still living from hand to mouth with nothing to show for it, because they have mortgaged their future to the system over there. cry

Many of them cannot even come home, because after many years abroad they have nothing to show for it. Do you know the number of Nigerian graduates with Masters' degrees driving taxi cabs, in New York?

Others have taken to crime and illegal means to make money, out of desperation. While quite a good number have had to marry foreigners of low repute, just to obtain a residence permit. At the end of the day, those foreigners show them pepper and they can't do jack, because they lack the means to move. angry

Oga, think deeply before you fall into the trap of thinking 'going abroad' is a trip to paradise, and you end up making such mistakes. undecided

For you to say NYSC is a waste of time, shows that you do not even understand what NYSC is all about. A number of my colleagues made use of their NYSC period to engage in small-scale businesses or learn new skills at their place of primary assignment, which ended up fetching them good money.

I had a friend who finished from UNILAG and was posted to Warri. The guy got curious about kerosene business, made friends who taught him all he needed to know and got connected to people at the depot. At the end of his NYSC year, he made enough money to buy a small car. wink

Only fools think that education is over-rated. undecided Ask Buhari about the insults he received during elections and till date, because of his lack of an education.

Education is a stepping stone, a periscope that broadens your horizon, and a tool that enables you to move from where you are, to where you want to be. At the very least, it gives you a professional identity, so that the public does not see you as a nonentity. It validates the little you have learnt. But it is not the final prize that puts food on your table.

You still have to do more after getting an education, in order to become successful. sad And this is where people miss it. They think an educational certificate will automatically get them a job, without realising it is just one of the tools that shows them how to acquire skills that help them get ahead, or create a job.

There are so many little things you can do to keep body and soul together, pending when you get a good job. Think outside the box, study hard and network. Learn from entrepreneurs and visit small-scale industries for ideas.

Above all, pray to God to send you divine help and inspiration. With God on your side, you will surely make a difference. undecided

Very interesting and educating write up op. In fact, I was guilty of all and they almost ruined my life. Graduated at 26 and at 41 no wife, no good job, no savings. Waited for so long for my father's friend who worked with shell to help. Even when there was so much money to start up something for myself, I used it to pave ways for custom, navy, inec, and police jobs and it yielded no fruit. Unfortunately the money went into wrong hands. Finally I have realised my mistakes and things are going smoothly now. I thank God Almighty for that.

Wow! Thank you very much sir for your comment. Really appreciate. I pray things continually go smooth for you. All the best

Travel legally to Australia, Canada, new Zealand and Germany, to do just what exactly?? What kind of jobs are you talking about? First of all, do you know how much the ticket, visa, travel documents, accommodation abroad etc., will cost you?? Calculate it. If you use that money to set up a small scale business in Nigeria, after doing your research don't you think you would be better off?

In these countries you mentioned, you cannot even get a decent professional job, without re-training to get their own certifications. Do you know how long it takes, or how much it costs?? shocked

Here is your answer in a nutshell. Good life and money is what majority of human populace crave for; they are found over there.
Did I hear you say 'startup a small scale business? Well goodluck in your venture but be watchful of how you channel 80% of your operating capital to fuel your generator. Not to talk of the security challenges that abound.

We are merely existing in 9ja.

Go over there and you will see that it is not as easy as you think to have a good life, especially when you are a foreigner or an immigrant. undecided Do you know how much it costs to retrain and get qualified over there before you can get a job? shocked Or you think your Naija certificate will automatically get you a good role without any hassle, in a foreign country? Or is it the menial jobs and dishwashing that the poorly-qualified and lower class do over there, that you think will give you a good life?

Finally, it is not all jobs that require electricity. Do your research. I have a friend who offers horticulture & gardening services on a medium-scale level to homes, companies etc. He makes more than an entry level staff monthly, in a high-end bank. Another one is heavily into trading & distribution. I cannot tell you how many six-figure zeros I saw in his bank statement, when he mistakenly left it behind in my car. undecided

Go and talk to the doctors, nurses, engineers etc. that work over there and let them tell you what they passed through, before they could get a job. If you got your medical, nursing or engineering degree over here, you would still have to retrain to get their own certifications over there, in order to work within their system. And this takes time, effort and resources. The only time this is not required, is if you graduated from their own universities or colleges. undecided

By the grace of God, I have had the privilege of working in 3 different continents in more than 8 countries. I have seen Nigerians in different places/situations, and observed first hand what they go through. If you still do not believe me, please hop on a plane to these foreign countries that you love so much and stay there for a few years. You will come back to compare notes and wish you had done things differently.

One word of advise: do not compare yourself with Nigerians that hold dual citizenships over there, or who have rich parents and families that sponsored their trips and education in those foreign countries. You would be making a huge mistake! sad

Ask your friends to tell you the real truth of what they are going through over there in Canada. undecided I have friends and family that live in Canada too, and it is not as easy as you make it sound to get a job, even through their federal programme.

Many people spend time, money and resources to get into that programme. I know an Architect who had a successful job here in Nigeria and travelled to Canada under one of their skilled programmes. He had to retrain as a physician's assistant in order to get a job over there. His architectural qualifications here, were of no use there. Think it through before you embark on any scheme. The grass is not always greener on the other side. sad Good luck.

Tedassie:
***********
During a robbery in Hong Kong, the bank robber shouted to everyone in the bank:

"Don't move. The money belongs to the Government. Your life belongs to you."

Everyone in the bank laid down quietly.

This is called "Mind Changing Concept” Changing the conventional way of thinking.

When a lady lay on the table provocatively, the robber shouted at her:

"Please be civilised! This is a robbery and not a rape!"

This is called "Being Professional”

Focus only on what you are trained to do!

When the bank robbers returned home, the younger robber (MBA trained) told the older robber (who has only completed Year 6 in primary school):

"Big brother, let's count how much we got."

The older robber rebutted and said:

"You are very stupid. There is so much money it will take us a long time to count. Tonight, the TV news will tell us how much we robbed from the bank!"

This is called "Experience”

Nowadays, experience is more important than paper qualifications!

After the robbers had left, the bank manager told the bank supervisor to call the police quickly. But the supervisor said to him:

"Wait! Let us take out $10 million from the bank for ourselves and add it to the $70 million that we have previously embezzled from the bank”.
This is called "Swim with the tide”

Converting an unfavorable situation to your advantage!

The supervisor says: "It will be good if there is a robbery every month."

This is called "Changing priority”

Personal Happiness is more important than your job”.

The next day, the TV news reported that $100 million was taken from the bank. The robbers counted and counted and counted, but they could only count $20 million.

The robbers were very angry and complained:

"We risked our lives and only took $20 million. The bank manager took $80 million with a snap of his fingers. It looks like it is better to be educated than to be a thief!"

This is called "Knowledge is worth as much as gold". Crave for knowledge..

I love this.
