TheGoodJoe:

Mikel did not play for the national team again prior to being named in the squad for the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations. In Nigeria's first group game, against Ghana, Mikel was an unused substitute. However, he was introduced into the second game against Zimbabwe early in the second half. Within ten minutes of coming on, he had supplied both the corner that resulted in Christian Obodo heading the game's opening goal, and scored Nigeria's second goal.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Obi_Mikel

This was where the magic happened. After this game it was time for Mikel to carry on the touch.
The 2006 world cup qualifiers were done and dusted before the AFCON. Okocha's should shakara started in 2005

Cameroon are 5 times champion, twin of there afcon trophy came through a defeat to Nigeria at the final at lagos and the other came in 2002 . If am not mistaken
goldfish80:

Talk about realism, Cameroun are 6 time Africa champions, more world cup appearances and a better world resume than us, confederations cup finalists, Olympic gold medalists just like us.
I don't see the reason why Nigerians are too proud and pompous when talking about this Camerounians and the double headers in August.

The bravado and tone in the language I see from people here whenever Cameron is mentioned is what I cannot understand. Its unreal.

Okocha had the might to keep playing based on his semi-god status. The arrival of Mikel was the catalyst that made it easy for Okocha to leave. Shakara is different from leaving.

What ratings?? Are you so lazy to dig up facts for yourself?? You claim to have followed football more than I do and yet you ask me for facts??

I have been screaming since the beginning of your absurd argument to furnish the thread with facts showing Mikel is overrated, non-relevant to the Eagles, and cannot dictate a game.... Have you done so??

I have given you a brief on his achievements, his performances, his summarised Class-Dossier and you ask for ratings. Loolll

Can't common sense tell you to go on some facts findings on all our Nigerian players of past, present and future and collate them unbiased into who is who in Nigeria's greatest.

Even Christian Chukwu calls Mikel one of Nigeria's best ever midfielders and GOATs and you here typing from wherever you are say otherwise.... You must be flogged. grin

Joebie:
Okay sir... please if you find any of our legends rank Mikel among the greats.. I will be convinced.. your ratings are personal..
Let me see facts.. any ratings online.. top 10 nigeria greatest.. please give me any reliable rating online that put Mikel up there..

Even before Mikel made his super eagles debut, Okocha was already dodging national team engagements. That's a fact.
If Nigeria had qualified for the world cup in Germany, Okocha would have stepped out of the pitch a minute for Mikel.

Mikel is an overrated Nigerian player-Joebie, 2017.

What can I say ooo?
Abeg Nothing.
*Make I just laugh small*

I'm not here for an arguement but to make a proposal to coach Rohr n his technical crew to drop John Obi Mikel from our match day squad against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun come august as some fans have been displeased with his performance since all these yrs point that he has not been justifying his inclusion in the NT.
These fans believes that Mikel stay in the NT is long overdue and has contributed little to non to the nations football in recent yrs...blablabla

i have decided not to argue wit any Nigerian on Mikel's contribution to the round leather game both locally n internationally.

Most of these ppl claim to have been following the game since 1100 AD but fail to identify/recognize players who carry the team on their shoulders. The only ones they notice/see are the ones busy showboating, n probably scoring and the funniest part of it all is that the ones who rarely scores but decide to stay back n bring stability to the team are always culprit of bashing n abuse...

This set of ppl are quick to mention Messi n Ronaldo(I'm not taking away anything from them) as yardstick to measure worldclass performance but they've failed to ask themselves why these same players have failed to replicate their clubs achievements in their respective national teams.

Football is Team game and until we learn to appreciate other players performances we will not come to understand the beauty of it.

Mikel might not be banging in goals for the national team but what he brings(vision, creativity, leadership etc) to the table is second to non and you like it or not he is already a football legend and a national hero.

Which is why I like Rohr. Many of you if u were coaches you would be like our indigenous coaches who do you planning by boasting.. Rohr is doing is homework. I'm confident in him. He knows very well that we cant take them for granted. i trust him to treat them with caution.
Like our domestic coaches would say, "I've not seen our oponents play, but we will play our own game and beat them" - laughable
My guy, our local coaches are as good as well.Their major problem is man management. They can,t manage players' ego.

Nigeria Rio 2016 Star Sadiq Umar Listed Among Top 20 Youngsters To Watch In Italy

The top scorer for Nigeria U23s at the Rio 2016
Olympics Sadiq Umar has been rated among the top 20 youngsters to watch in Italy in the year 2017.

On loan to Bologna from Roma, the 20 year old
was listed alongside other top prospects in the
Serie A, in a list compiled by respected
international tabloid Guardian.

Read below how he was rated in the piece.

»Umar Sadiq, 19, Bologna (on loan from Roma), Nigeria.

One looks at Umar Sadiq and immediately thinks he’s not fit for Serie A. Maybe not even for football in general. This is probably what people used to think of Peter Crouch when he first wore a football shirt, but this didn’t prevent him from scoring plenty of goals. And nor is it stopping Sadiq.

Last season, the Nigerian centre-forward’s
supremacy was quite embarrassing for the
opponents of Roma’s youth team – he scored 14 goals in just nine appearances in the Campionato Primavera and Coppa Italia Primavera, five in nine appearances in the Uefa Youth League, plus two in six games in Serie A.

Such impressive numbers speak for themselves.

In the summer, Roma decided to loan the 19-
year-old to Bologna so he could step out of youth football, where he’s too strong for defenders.

Unfortunately he has missed most of the season so far due to an ankle injury but, if the surgery shows positive results, the long-limbed striker will be ready to show everybody his killer instinct remains among the grown-ups.

Just because Okocha failed to impress in a match for example you liken him to Oruma that impressed in just a handful.. perfect analogy

Let's face cold hard reality do you know how hard it is to play in one the best teams in the world, Chelsea for a decade and claim consistent first team jersey.

Mikel Obi for me has been one if not the most consistent midfielders in the world. If not for Mourinho's defensive restrictions we never got to see the full potential of Mikel obi.

Clearly he is world class now if he was few shades lighter to vanilla he would have got a lot more respect.

of course not. Being realistic to expect a fiery encounter does not mean a display of inferiority. Even big teams like Germany for example will say good things about Nigeria prior to a match. The will study our strenghts and be cautions.. i've noticed that about european teams.. they respect us regardless. Respecting Cameroon does not mean losing confidence

That is why I say I respect but not fear them.

I disagree with you on Okocha. Okocha was selfish, his resignation was not due to the emergence of Mikel. He basically wanted to protect his future at Bolton wanderers, funny enough he was binned by Bolton when they were done with him.
Have you forgotten how he lied that he lost his way in London enroute an Eagle's training camp? His nonchalant attitude cost us the world cup ticket in 2005 to Angola. It still hurts when I think about it, thankfully Nigerians have moved on.

Okocha was obsessed with okocha and did a lot of very exciting show boating that looked good but didn't always help the team.

Oruma may not have been as skilful but he played a an unselfish team game with end product. I remember him in the Ghana v Nigeria Afcon he was outstanding. Unfortunately JJay didn't like the competition he represented and was not very sportsman like to him.

Cameroon Skipper Echoes Memories Of AFCON Win Against Nigeria When Milla Lifted Trophy

Twenty nine years after the substantive
Cameroon skipper Emile Mbouh-Mbouh decided
that the influential striker Roger Milla should lift
the African Cup of Nations, the drama was
repeated on Sunday in Gabon after their 2-1 win against Egypt in the final.

The Indomitable Lions won their second African
Cup of Nations title after beating Nigeria 1-0 in
the final, with Emmanuel Kunde netting the only goal of the game in the 55th minute.

Milla, then on the books of Montpellier HSC in
France, had announced his international
retirement, and the trophy was handed to him as a mark of tribute.

Captain Benjamin Moukandjo made the same
request to Lyon defender Nicolas Nkoulou by
allowing him lift the trophy in Libreville.

Who is this representative? It seems his profile must be low, because it was Amaju who personally went to speak to Jordan Ibe and his step Dad Michael.

The quality of your emissary can often determine the quality and nature of response received.

I don't want to go into your negative presumption about willingness to play for your fatherland by British Nigerian who may even speak more Nigerian languages than you.

The other issues PLEASE understand me we are Nigerians. When our people often get into position of influence we then look how we can manipulate the situation for financial gain. I know what I a m talking about.

I don't know his name but I'll try to get it latter.

It seems you are very new here. Ask anyone on this thread, who is the most vocal on extending invitation to foreign born players to the National team, they will tell you I am da one. grin

I clamored for all the best players you may think of based in England.

There are two things that might be hindering these lads from representing us. The first one is the Nigerian factors, you know na, and the second is players willingness to represent us.

I know in most cases, Nigeria factors are the bottle neck blocking these lads from representing us but at the same time, some don't want to represent us after been approached.

But I'm one of those still insisting that they should be invited first before we assume they are not interested. Ask anyone here.

However, we never hear from those invited so far. Aina, Ademola-lookman, the Man city boy etc

Abi you get any news for us about dem? grin
