I reckon some day I'll have saved up enough to buy one and restore it.

As time goes on and more of them go out of service they'll be increasingly reduced to scrap or museum pieces. Then they'll become valuable as antique vehicles rather than weapons.

BRAZIL TO SELL 3 SUPER TUCANO AIRCRAFT TO NIGERIA

The Brazil Embraer Defence and Security Limited disclosed that the Brazilian Government has given approval for the sale of its three serviceable pre-owned Super Tucano A-29 attack aircraft to Nigeria. The acquisition of this aircraft by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is expected to boost its operational capabilities in tackling insurgence and militancy in the country. Aside its deployment for Surveillance, Reconnaissance and counter-insurgency missions, the aircraft could also carry a wide array of armaments, including precision guided monitors, advance avionic, communications and sensors. Additionally, the aircraft can also operate in remote and un-paved airfield while the maximum speed of the aircraft is approximately 590 kilometres per hour.

Conveying the approval to the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Mshl Sadique Abubakar at the NAF Headquarters Abuja, the Embraer Contract Negotiator, Mr Eneias de Souza Freitas said, “the Brazilian Ministry of Defence has informed them that approval for the sell of 3 Super Tucano A-29 aircraft to Nigeria has been given,” adding that Brazilian government has authorized its Air Force to transfer the aircraft to Embraer Defence and Security, for onward delivering to the NAF.

Mr Freitas further said that the legal requirement and procedures were being finalized by the Brazilian Air Force while promising to facilitate the legal process “this is of concerned to us, we will for sure take your message back to the people with the legal procedures to quicken the process.” Mr Freitas said.

Meanwhile, the CAS disclosed that the idea by the NAF to acquire Super Tucano A-29 aircraft was mooted in 2015 and appropriated in the 2016 Budget. He urged the company to facilitate the procurement process to enable the NAF take delivering of the aircraft within reasonable time.

The CAS added that a team of NAF officers would visit Brazil to further inspect the aircraft. Nigeria also intends to purchase new Super Tucano A-29 aircraft from the United State. Mr Freitas was accompanied by the Embraer Director of Business Development, Europe and Africa, Mr Jose Gustavo.

Good news

It won't be a stripped down version like we might later get from the US. All West African air forces have this aircraft just bloody mindedness from the Americans. We could even have paid Ghana to buy more and we sign a dual-use agreement.

Nigeria won't accept a stripped down version of the Tucano. The current security issues will make a stripped down version have little or no value. In fact, ours should be an upgraded version.

Pirates in Nigeria abduct Russians, Ukrainian

Pirates have abducted seven Russian sailors and one Ukrainian in the territorial waters of Nigeria, the Russian embassy has said.

Russian Embassy in Nigeria reported on Wednesday that, “the BBC Caribbean ship came under a piratic attack in the territorial waters of Nigeria.”

The Russian embassy said on its Twitter page that, “Seven Russian citizens and one Ukrainian citizen have been kidnapped from the ship”.

The Russian embassy has asked the Nigerian authorities for assistance in establishing the whereabouts of the abducted.”

According to Russia News Agency TASS, Maritime Herald on Tuesday said the general cargo ship BBC Caribbean was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea 45 nautical miles south-west off Brass, Nigeria.

The incident happened near Pennington Oil Terminal at Nigerian Delta, when the cargo ship was approached by a motor skiff with armed men on board, who opened fire.

The guards on board of the general cargo ship BBC Caribbean returned fire.

On November 27 last year three Russian sailors were taken hostage when the Saronic Breeze ship was attacked in the territorial waters of Benin. On December 20 all were freed.

On February 23 last year the Bourbon Liberty 251 ship belonging to a French company was seized by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea.

The attackers eventually fled taking two hostages, one of them Russia’s Ivan Rydny. He was freed in March 2016 to return to his family in Murmansk.

The news of the hostage taking was also broken in the Twitter handle of Rus to En Fr Es News ‏@Rus_Eng_News which said “In Nigeria pirates kidnapped seven Russians and the citizen of Ukraine’’

Ruslan TradVerified account ‏@ruslantrad had #BREAKING: pirates took hostage 8 sailors from #Russia and #Ukraine in the territorial waters of #Nigeria.

It said “In connection with the seizure of the Embassy of the Russian Federation requested the authorities of Nigeria’s assistance in locating the stolen.’’

The contract makes sense to me. Since we are so keen on getting the aircrafts from the US, it seems Brazilian banks don't have the capital to finance a large purchase. However, we should have gone for 6 units at least from Brazil, while we wait for the 12 units ordered from the US.

That would have been a breach of usage contract. I like the Super Tucano, it's a very good aircraft for COIN and LICW. However for conventional warfare, it's borderline useless. I didn't want to see a situation where Nigeria would by the Tucano at the expense of the JF-17 thunder, that was why, in hindsight, I was glad our initial attempts to buy the A-29 was blocked.

I like the fact we have purchased, the JF-17, MI-35m, MI-17 terminator, A-29, Super Mushak, C-295 and additional UAVs in one fell swope. Progressively, we can increase the numbers.

It hasn't been acquired, we've shown concrete interest. The CAS said it was going to be added to the budget.
