I started from 3 months, although it was because i just felt a bit overwhelmed with being a new mom, and i had like 10 packs of disposables as gifts so decided to use those first.
You can use them from birth, and there are even tiny sizes for pre-term babies or newborns with low birth weights.

There are many cloth diaper brands out there, there are popular US and UK brands which are what i have but Wamby is practically the only Naija brand that seem to know what they are talking about regarding modern cloth diapers. i.e they are not just selling for selling sake, they genuinely know their products and what works, with tips and ideas on how to use cloth diapers.

Cloth diapers all come in different styles for instance All-in-ones, All-in-twos, pocket diapers, Fitted diapers, flats, inserts, covers/ wraps... etc etc but in essence you get an absorbent part and a waterproof part.

For the one(s) you have, post a few pictures and i will know what type it is before i can tell you how it works.

Thanks a lot. I am not at home but i browsed the web and was able to come up with a picture that looks like it. Is there a website or a writeup that i can read up about the different types of cloth diapers so that i can make up my mind? I want to go cloth. And if you know good UK brands that are not too pricey, let me know as well.

My Opinion:
dont get too many newborns because you don't know how big your baby will be and it will be out grown before you blink.

Dont waste your money buying any outing clothes that is less than 3 months. - most babies live in vests and sleepsuits and they don't go out much in the first 3 months. however you may want to get something nice for baptism or dedication if you know you will do it before 3 months.
".. but what about naming?" i hear you ask. Have you ever seen anything more than a baby's face at the naming?, at 8 days old, they are all wrapped up so no one will see the clothes underneath the blanket/ shaw. just get a nice blanket for the photos.

Consider how often you will bath the baby and how often you want to do laundry and that will guide you.

For instance- f you want to do laundry like once a week i would say about 10 vests and 10 bodysuits at any one time. however if you want to bath baby twice a day - due to nigerian heat, then you may need to double or at least add half that number to about 15 to 20

may be 3 in newborn size; and 7 in 0-3 months

then when they out grow that you can get:

3 no 3-6 months and 7 no 6-9 months
you really don't want to be buying a new set every 3 months, so you can reduce the number of 3-6 months and get more 6-9 months, as they will grow into it and you will use them for longer)

from about 6 months, note they will be wearing other clothes so you may want to reduce the Bodysuits for nighttime only, but the vests will be used day and night, and also on their own if the weather is too hot. they are also more mobile so you will want to cut down on the oversized sleepsuits so they dont trip or fall so

7 no 9-12 months - sleep suits, 10 no 12-18 months vests - the vests sleeves can be rolled up if long sleeve.

Other cloths like dresses, tops, trousers etc, you can get no more than 4 at any one time for outing, - most likely for church on sunday or the odd party. and always have atlleast 2 of them a size up. because you can wake up one fine Sunday morning and bring out your 3-6 month fancy dress, and 4-5 your months old daughter has outgrown it. shocked

For house clothes - see how you get on, after like 3 -6 months you will have an idea of how many to buy

get plenty bibs, i ended up having at least 20! you will use like 3 a day on a good day! had only 7 initially and i ended up hand washing every second day to be able to keep up.

Don't buy too many mittens - they always seem to fall off, and get lost. getting the ones with good elastic is ridiculously hard. alternative is to use baby stocks instead - it never falls off. so you may want buy more of the socks.

For the cot, a bassinet is your best bet - they last till about 6 months, they can be dismantled when done, some even have castors so you can easily move them from one room to the other. some also double as a rocker so you can rock the bassinet ...... very useful feature.

if you want something longer lasting and more versatilte, and if you have space in your house, i would say get a travel cot, most can be used for a long time about 9 or 12 months i think and some can be transformed into a play pen when baby is too big to sleep in them. you also get the benefit of them being collapsible and you can easily carry it with you if you are travelling e.g - a weekend at grandma's. you can also get a mosquito net and lay over the top.

hope this helps.

sorry i sabi write plenty.
Thanks a lot for the detailed reply. I think I've bought enough for now then. I think I can afford to go back to the market when she's like 2 months old, atleast then I'd know her size and growth capacity grin I bought a dozen bibs and some preggy women at the store were exclaiming like I've bought too much, then God my friend insisted it wasn't too much.

U are not the first woman to enter her husband's house through pregnancy. You won't be the last. Some were able to make it work later on. If you want to leave, fine. But me thinks with wisdom and calmness, you can make it work since you are already in. And I repeat, dont harm urself or ur child. Its not worth it.
You said it all o. She is not the 1st to enter marriage tru pregnancy. She is even 25years sef, me I never even reach that age ko o yet no matter the circumstances, I cannever lock my husband outside (for marriage wey I still they push to work out to avoid mockery the more). The battles I have fought for my marriage at my age, ex issues, ladies, finance, violence to mention but a few but prayers kept me and to the glory of God, I have overcomed close to all of those my initial problems. I no believe say I go survive my 1st year of marriage. Now I can proudly say I know the right button to press for my dh. I believe some of the maamas here have seen my husband, very young man wey babes still dey chyke but all my fears are all in the past cuz with Jesus I hv learnt his button and everyday grows better.
Now would I have seen this happiness if I quit earlier cuz of the numerous issues I once had? hell No.
Maamaa, I walked in your shoes if not worst today am a testimony and you too can! sit up for that marriage cuz this man you married na ur clear eye u use go say I do even though belle 1st enter.
You said u aint a virtous woman, nobody is good either. Me I had a son outside wedlock before I even got pregnant for my dh that ended in marriage, so who con bad pass!
Kill yourself, kill your child will not stop my clock from ticking neither will it make your man change nor miss you when you are no more. Sit up on your marriage biko, you are old enough for it.

You can read the following write-ups, it covers all the basics and quite informative

http://mameandboo..co.uk/2016/12/cloth-diapering-101.html

http://mameandboo..co.uk/2016/12/cloth-diapering-101-part-2-inserts.html

http://mameandboo..co.uk/2017/01/diaper-102-pockets-prefolds-and-inserts.html

the UK brands i have range from little lambs, grovia, tot bots and bambino mio.

"Not too pricey" is quite a relative term, as at when i bought mine two years ago, there were no good naija alternatives with a decent range of products and sound knowledge on how to cloth diaper, the average price was like £12 -£17 for each, and i have over 30 diapers the prices haven't gone up much however the exchange rate was not this crazy. i do not regret buying them for one second but fastforward to now with a year off work, a much leaner bank account embarassed, and the knowledge i have gained in the process of using cloth nappies ....... lets just say my choices - will be quite different

Buy Graco pack and play. I shared a picture a few pages back. When I get home I'll share a pic of how it looks packed. You can take it from room to room or even for long visits to someones house.

Clothes sha take it easy. People will still gift you stuff and you can buy as you go along. I bought very few 0-3 and focused more on 3-6. Can't remember the exact quantity

Yeah taking it from room to room is a compulsory feature for whatever I end up buying. How much did it cost, let me stalk your old pages and look for a picture.

EDIT: Ok, Ive seen it, 45k cry, it looks worth it sha. Do I still have to buy a mattress for it? How do you put a mosquito net over it? Is there any part of it that can be detached and placed on a bed for the baby to sleep in, is that what the napper is? Sorry for the plenty questions

Lol. It's OK. I did my research wella too. Also a friend used it before me. She still uses the playpen part now sef
No mattress. I bought a cot net that should fit. No part can be placed on the bed oh, the napper must still be attached to use it. Except you buy those 5/6k covered things that people place on bed. I've attached a pic of it packed to go.

You can check on Amazon for different reviews. Also Jazzyjazz bought it and she can help us chook mouth since I'm sure she would have launched her own by now

Am not blaming her. Many mamas took time to explain to her why getting married to the man will be a wrong decision. Am just saying she should have listened then. @Maaamaaa, If you want to leave the marriage then fine! but don't even think of suicide. But I think you should start praying to God to intervene and help your marriage so it can work out.

Hello teamie. Lol... At 16 weeks, I'm hardly showing o, maybe ftm things sha. Can't wait to start showing, I can't pass a mirror without checking my tommy out. At least lemme see evidence that LO is actually there and growing. Morning sickness has reduced but some days still dey get as e be for me o. I can also relate with that body pain issue o. I always return from work wasted and very tired. Infact, night sleep has also been a luxury as I can hardly find a comfortable position to relax in. Lying on my tommy or on my side with a pillow in between my legs seem to work for me a bit.

Aameen to all your prayers o. I wish you same too, bi ithnillah.

I took lipton tea thru out my pregnancy (later switched to top tea). It helped with my nausea as I experienced it the whole 9 months. I took at most 2 cups a day. I also ate healthy! Lots of fruits! I also used lots of milk in the tea. My baby weighed 3.7kg at birth.

Just take in moderation pls. What works for A may not work for B

I want a cot that's very portable, small size, and that can be dismantled and folded up when the baby is no longer using it. Any suggestions?
I don't still think I'm done with clothes tho.
Someone should please tell me what's the realistic quantity of clothes to buy, and their sizes. For instance, how many new born, how many 3-6 and how many 6-9. I don't want to have too few that we'd be doing wash and wear grin, or too many that she would outgrow the clothes before she even gets to wear them.

Wow! Wow! Wow! I am late to this post and I wanted to waka pass on this comment and all others that you have made but nahh. Aunty Judy Judgina that knows how to keep a home, care to teach us?? This lady has only talked about one thing but for her to be frustrated and angry to the point of locking out her husband, did you consider that this is not the only thing he may have done to anger her and she is just at the end of her endurance rope? You have not even asked her any questions, you have quickly jumped on the bandwagon to criticize her. People like you are the ones who ask women suffering from domestic violence "what did you do that made him beat you". So much for being your sister's keeper.

On the other hand, you may take a little time out, go stay somewhere for a few days to clear you head and mind but please know that in all of this, your health and the health of your baby is of utmost importance. Stay strong love. This too shall pass.

Maaamaaa:
Thank you all for your advice...

I want to leave this marriage, its not working and yes im not a virtuous woman...

Yimu.
See your mouth grin
Go and lock your husband outside next time you are at the end of your endurance rope.
Then come back and tell us how he and his family members thanked you. Nonsense.
Is that how to handle a man that you are trying to live with peacefully? You don't know men like peace and respect? You too clap for urself o. Better adviser.
