Not because he has spent so much on him but because there is a bond of love and closeness between the man and son that nothing can stop. It will be difficult for the young man to stop referring to the old man as his Dad and vice versa. In all honesty, a child's parent/s is the person or persons that raised the child. That is why some children are closer to their grandmother or their aunts or whoever raise them than to their biological parents.

For example most "armed robbers" are Men.

Now, if we pick that 'statistic' and use it to make a general statement like: "Men are Robbers", it is a "generalisation" based on statistics (and it is statistically true!) but it does not mean EVERY SINGLE MAN is a Robber.
