epistlegcfr: Apologies but you don't sound like what you portray yourself to be. * Studying masters in Canada (and can't do online research about schools in USA) *Strong Coding background and algorithm as well as high level mathematics (and trying to evade GRE) * You re seeking for PhD scholarship when we all know 90% of US Schools fund PhD Students *Too many things just don't add up, but what's my own sef, I'll say wehdone sir! wait for the gurus in the house to come give you suggestions #WehdoneSir 15 Likes |

omoluabiguy: 1. Well I may not really know so much about US universities. But if 90 percent of them do fund PhD according to your claim, then why do some schools ask students for proof of finance as a prerequisite for sending I-20 form or so? For Canadian universities it does not work like that. You could even apply solely for the visa using your funding letter as evidence of finance. It is the exclusive duty of CIC to assess your proof of finance and not the university of your choice. 2. Like I said I am rounding up my degree right now and I have too much on my plate. I am taking some certification classes, taking my last course, writing for publication and at the same time writing my thesis, while working by the side for my supervisor. So it is never about evading or running away from GRE. I do not have the time for GRE right now and I am aware some universities do exempt candidates that studied in the west for a specific period of time from taking GRE. 3. About the research of a thing, I already mentioned that I got a university in Chicago from personal research, that does not require GRE and they do have good rating. I saw another one at Maryland or so but I do not like their rating. It's just about getting fast answers and cutting corners using people's experience here and that's all about it. 7 Likes |

epistlegcfr:If your story is true, which is a big if, it is your unwillingness to write GRE that is holding you back and narrowing your options. Writing GRE would open up a world of opportunities for your PhD since all ranked schools require it. I don't know your previous experience with GRE, but you sound scared of the exam and it seem prep time is not the problem. Now, if you are as strong as you claim and successfully completed a Masters in Canada, you do not need to be afraid and can ace the exam with 2 months of smart prep. The knowledge you have gained during your master programme will stand you in good stead. Therefore, if I were you, I would prepare my application towards fall 2018, register and take the exam sometimes around August this year, and then apply to a mixture of top and good schools instead of trying to cut corners. That's my $0.02 coming from someone who smashed GRE recently. 3 Likes |

If you are really serious about a phd with funding from at least a "good" school (good because you still have to think about job prospect and life after school) ...... , then why look for short cut (hence why you seeing some comments) 1 Like |

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen, First of all I would like to congratulate you all for your excellent work here and I am really glad that this thread exist because perusing through previous posts has been an eye opener for me. I am quite in a complicated situation and I really need your thoughts and suggestions. Am currently a final year student and in 2014 I applied for a tourist visa and I was denied. I filled my occupation then as a student in level 100. Now I have been accepted to study a distinguished program in the US with a 70 percent scholarship. It is an undergraduate level program. So please what do you think of my situation. Do I have a chance? Wouldn't that sound desperate? Thanks |

amanze15:I strongly disagree with this. so all the numerous Africans, indians and chineses doing P.hd in the US wont get job in the industry? I know alot of Ph.d guys that finished from my school and are working for Duke Energy, I even know a guy that finished with P.hd from Uni of Arkansas and he works with Shell. Its what you make of it and don't limit yourself, nothing is luck..Some people have worked hard and they deserve what they got..you might call it grace of God though 1 Like |

femi321:duke energy and shell?! bros I say it again, it's a debatable fact but you become UNATTRACTIVE the moment you decide to continue with PhD with a hope of getting a job in the industry. About 49% of faculty in US institution of higher learning are foreign-born(a 2001 study) , so you have more chances of working in an institution of higher learning than getting a job in the industry. they work in Universities across the country, its the easiest way to get employed if you are a PhD student. I have taken 11 classes since I got to the states only 3 are Americans |

amanze15:Thank God you said debatable, thats means its not a fact but a claim/propositions/assertions.So you based your judgement on the fact that US have more foreign-born faculties? Okay. So that we don't derail this thread.lets end it here. BTW 11 classes? are you an undergraduate or Ph.d student? |

Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by amanze15(m): 11:28pm On Feb 15, 2017 |
femi321: that's the share luck I keep saying, they tell you "you are over qualified" , most of those companies you mentioned, their CEOs have 3 to 4 masters degrees from prestigious or even none, people like Rexx Tillerson have been in the industry for more than 40 years. people like Col. Lawrence A. Anyanwu with bachelor’s degree in finance in Nigeria and a master’s degree in engineering technology here in the states is in the position to be a distinguished Nigerian-born soldier still serving in the Army. JUST SET A TARGET FOR YOURSELF, THE MOMENT YOU SET FOOT IN THE US, PhD OR MASTERS OR DIPLOMA OR WHAT NOT, PUT IN WORK AND GRACE OF GOD WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE REST 2 Likes |
