I cannot deny that I have learned something new. It was like school debates. The two parties had strong points but you just know the one that applies to your situation.

And more importantly the information was well passed. Everybody testifies.

Maybe justwise should ban Twoods again so that he can contribute more.Lolz. PHD won't be a bad idea in this Trump's country for now. During my school career fair, most companies require you to be a citizen/PR/asylum before you can apply for an internship or coop position s. Infact an HR ask me if I have other plans to get GreenCard because they aren't ready to file for anybody. The military guys advised me to go and get married and come back to apply.. Peeps, start working towards something maybe pHD,it will always come handy.Kudos guys.

i need to be banned... i have work to do. grin

Whether we like it or not, the H1B visa is going to be revamped soon and its probably why companies are now asking that folks have at least a PR before taking them on. One thing that is likely going to be in your favor (at least based on what i've been hearing regarding ideas to reform the H1B/employment-based green card route) is that preference will be given to bigger companies and people with phds who studied in US universities.

An American can afford to stop at the bachelors, we have to aim higher...

At times you start questioning your parents why they gave birth to you in Nigeria, Why Nigeria cant be as great as US..why we are backward in a country full of milk and honey, i just checked and i saw 1$=#516, i could not close my mouth....I was like what??Imagine white folks you know you are better than, having full time jobs and internship positions but you, you cant work more than 20hrs on campus. And to get job after grad you still have to hustle. If not that as a Nigerian you have to hustle and attain a higher height, only few will be interested in Phd. Most Americans stop at bachelors and masters. It will be well mehn

Why not use a gtb or access ATM, thats your best option and you will get a deal of #320 and #325 respectively. Right now black market is #516, i am sure no one will do that for you less than #480.

1. Well I may not really know so much about US universities. But if 90 percent of them do fund PhD according to your claim, then why do some schools ask students for proof of finance as a prerequisite for sending I-20 form or so? For Canadian universities it does not work like that. You could even apply solely for the visa using your funding letter as evidence of finance. It is the exclusive duty of CIC to assess your proof of finance and not the university of your choice.

It's true that most stem phd programs are funded by the department. They need a fat bank statement that covers your tuition in case you lost your funding due to poor performance. In this case, if it happens before/by your second year, you would be given a second masters and asked to quit. In regards to your first post, even if you get scholarship funding, you will still need to go to the embassy with a good statement of account for the same reason I mentioned above.

epistlegcfr:

2. Like I said I am rounding up my degree right now and I have too much on my plate. I am taking some certification classes, taking my last course, writing for publication and at the same time writing my thesis, while working by the side for my supervisor. So it is never about evading or running away from GRE. I do not have the time for GRE right now and I am aware some universities do exempt candidates that studied in the west for a specific period of time from taking GRE.

There is no program that wouldn't ask for a minimum from any student even if it's an easy to get in program. To get programs without GRE you would do something like this: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=A+university+that+does+not+require+GRE+for+phd+computer+science

PS: Most phd programs would ask you for GRE since they are going to fund your studies. With the GRE scores, they can select dependable students who are worth an investment.

epistlegcfr:

3. About the research of a thing, I already mentioned that I got a university in Chicago from personal research, that does not require GRE and they do have good rating. I saw another one at Maryland or so but I do not like their rating. It's just about getting fast answers and cutting corners using people's experience here and that's all about it.

But unfortunately, you will hardly get one if not what you researched yourself. As a grad student, TOELF/IELTS would be waived by most schools.

a masters student, if there are more foreign-born getting employed through Academia that pushes the fact it's a haven for PhD students looking to be employed. I have gotten advice from most of the faculty members I have had the opportunity to interact with, the least of whom have 15 to 20 years in the industry before joining the academia, to find a job before thinking of PhD if I have HIGH hopes of working in the industry at some point. *11 classes taking compulsory classes in engineering so as to graduate as a geological engineering, first degree was basic geology.

After many years of studies and research as a Biochemist I need to work in the industry, not academia as it seems to be likely. So after looking at this big picture in front of me, I decided to go with the other side of science which I know I'm passionate at and I can get job(s) in the field even while in school.

Debates used to be educating like this before until people turned to unnecessary attacks on each other rather than passing across intelligent opinions. About the issue you mentioned, what you studied also determines which way to go.

Hi International students,

please what do you use to file your taxes as an international student. if you manually fill a form 1040NREZ, how do you calculate what you are supposed to get back as tax refund? I also dont want to use a firm. I want to file my taxes myself. Thank you.
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by Nobody: 4:02pm On Feb 17, 2017
How will you be asking this sort of question on NL?
Email your grad program director and cc the grad school and they
will let you know the drill. As far as I know, K-State only needs your
uploaded transcripts until when they accept you. The most reliable
information comes from K-State, email them instead.

Ask your school, glacier nonresident alien tax compliance system is what you should use.

Biko don't manually fill anything, go to OLT tax website and file your tax there, its 15$ to file the federal tax, then print out your state returns and send it to your state tax office. Glacier doesnt e-file tax returns, i would have suggested that you go to your school international student office, they should have glacier code for about 5$, i also dont think glacier will fill your state tax return form, that means you will still have to paper file your state refund. If you manually file (paper file), it takes about 6months to get your refund if you have a refund. The latest 1040NR form allows e-filing now, as at last year, they don't. So if you want your refund quick, E-file is the way. It should take less than 3weeks to get your refund with OLT Tax. You can also check refund amount using OLT tax or sprintax or Glacier tax websites. Those are the only software that file 1040NR. Dont go and use any agent because most of them dont know anything about 1040NR, what they will file for you is 1040 and that's illegal, it will bring out more Tax refund..even more than what you paid as Tax, even though it might not bite you forever but you never can tell..

At times when we say people ask some questions that are meant for Grad coordinator here, its like we are harsh or not friendly. This kind of questions should even be used to build rapport with the Grad coordinator but people decide to ignore the Grad cord and when time to hustle for funding comes, they pop up in the grad cord mail inbox all of a sudden without having any rapport before. Its not rocket science

whenever they ask some questions cheesy Even in this recession,
people are still slack and not proactive. LOL

True talk bro.
I started talking with my grad coord from Naija, he said they didn't have funding. When he saw that I am a promising student,he took me to the dept chair to find something for me. To cut the story short, he facilitated my funding and he's been like a father to me here. He is also my advisor and it all started with a simple email. People on here want to be spoon-fed.

Its not rocket science, that how it is done. I don't even have problem about spoon feeding but for our own good its always better to be proactive and learn how to fish rather than being fed. Its this same Grad cord that make the most of the decision about hiring TAs. No one is saying people shouldn't even ask questions because ignorance is not an excuse but we should try to direct the question to the right authority and if we are not satisfied , ask other people.I am very sure the grad cord of all the schools i applied too then have never received the numbers of email they received from me, from one single individual even though some of them never replied while some replied at the speed of light, its after i don't get a concrete answer from one or two then i call people like Sirriddy just to have a 2nd opinion because he was doing the same thing as me..We neeed people, a tree doesnt make a forest. You can never over-emphasize the gains you get from building rapport with Grad Cord. After all these epistle, some people will still come here and say ''at times they are scared to ask questions here''...You shouldn't be scared, people are just advising you based on their own experiences, its now left to you to take it in good faith or hold grudge.
