How did you study computer science without having a laptop?

Not every institution mandated it for students to have laptop before studying computer science

You are only frustrated and you seriously need to start thinking outside the box. I'm also in your shoes but mine is "just" four months but I'm already working on a lot of things.

In case you're interested in being a programmer, you can register at Switch.ng. You'll answer some questions once your approved and would be invited for an interview.

If you pass, they'll train you for three months before interning you at an IT firm for another three months. Thereafter, they'll get you a job at an IT firm in exchange for a part of your salary for one year. Don't take my word for it though, I cannot remember some of the details properly and I'll advise you to read through the site.

There is also CodeLagos. Go to codelagos.org and click on the "become a facilitator" button. You'll be taught programming and would be contracted to teach others. It'll pay 15-25k per month and you don't need programming experience to apply.

You can run both together. the Switch.ng training is on weekdays (9-4) and they'll give you transport allowance and free lunch during your training while CodeLagos is a weekend job.
Nice one bro!
I'm very much interested in switch. Is that what u r working on?

Don't mind the OP.

That's usually how you know a wasted youth: Always thinking that someone owes him or her a job.

If you can't get a job, why don't you try to start one yourself?

Lamenting about whether connection works or not is not going to save your situation.

Just like having a STRONG 2.1 which you must have now seen is completely USELESS.

Look around you now Mr. OP.

Is there anything you can do with what you already know or the skills you already possess?

That's how you get yourself a job.

Why do you people always talk like this. Are you practically blaiming him and calling him a wasted a youth just because he is looking for a job?

You think all these petty things that people do in the name of enterpreneur are better than having a well-paying jobs?

Most of the so called enterpreneurs cannot even put food on their tables. Some of them lacked the determination to persist in searching for a good job; they gave up eventually and decided to do anything to survive. Is this what you call enterpreneurship?

If you must know, the young man needs a good job so that he can raise enough money to establish an IT firm.

Many industrialists in Nigeria were once employees.

It ir not a crime to search for a job.

Setting up a decent ice-cream factory alone will cost at least N2.5m for a start. How much then do you expect an IT firm to cost?

You just want him to do what every average computer literate person is doing. That cannot even guarantee him N20k monthly.

It sounds good to the ear when you start analyzing here on nairaland how a graduate can become a millionaire with just N100k. However, in real life, N100k cannot get you an apartment, neither can it buy a nice laptop.

If the institution is useless enough not to mandate laptop for computer science students, shouldn't a sensible computer science student own one?

What science are you studying about computers when you don't have one?

sometimes we just tend to undermine certain jobs and look down on those who do them.. When the truth of the matter is that they are even earning more than the graduate who thinks its a job for d poor... He doesnt even need a job.. He has a talent and he should make use of it.

You are on point bro. Some years ago after graduation I was like @op until I put shyness and pride away. Now, instead of looking for somebody to employ me, I'm now looking for somebody to employ.

After stayed at home for almost a year jobless I now believed that connection is the only way to get a good job in Nigeria because all those graduated with 2.2 and pass but well connected are all gainfully employed. Me with my strong 2.1math/comp.sci still here jobless, if na to pray i don turn to prayer warrior all to no avail but I still blv God can do it, I've attended some interviews only to meet like 50 applicants (some with experience) on one/two positions hmmm also no even 20k to start any business

You childish, embarrassing and unnecessary attachment to University grade is the reason for your unemployment and not lack of connections or job. I am on my third job in less than 5yrs. Firstly throw away the illusion of 2:1 because it can't fetch you clean water let alone a good meal. Instead develop your self, brush ur teeth twice a day, learn to dress well, learn to speak fluently and communicate decently and master your use of language, learn power languages and postures. If you insulted your elders or the gods because of ur unfounded attachment to your 2:1 make amends. In the real world grades mean nothing value does. So quit searching for jobs and improve your value for the next 3months. And wen you make your first million dont forget to send me a thank you letter.

Try to network. I don't mean joining a networking scheme like MMM oh. grin . But when you get to know some important people, they'll most likely be glad to help you.
It won't be bad to look for a powerful church like RCCG to join. But u have to be a bit patient though. Just meet more people. QED.

What other tools do you need to learn most of what he suggested above. you probably have an android phone and can surf, these are the basic things you will need.
take me for instance, i finished school last year sept(geology, awaiting service). realising d nature of securing a job in Nigeria i thought of an additional skill 2 acquire to be gainfully self employed should i find my self in ur situation.
barbing, tailoring nd programming were d 3 top skills i considered, finally settled wit programming. i searched Nland Programming section nd found a thread by javanian which guided me on what language 2 learn. i had no laptop 2 write nd run my code, so i downloaded AIDE on android 2 write nd test run basic Java codes. there are lots of good free ebooks nd tutorial videos on youtube that can put u throug any prog-Lang. if u dont ave data u can do cheap night sub 2 download the videos nd ebooks.

A number of people have shared some good suggestions - Ikigia, dingbang, Mobsync, and I can see other people asking for more details.. So the question is what has ymee picked from this thread so far and what does he plan to do next?

Also, one thing I will add is that attitude and mindset matters a lot.

@OP, the solution to your problem is on the inside of you if you had those credentials you mentioned. I graduated with 2.2 in botany but I got a job in a redundant federal commission that reduces salaries without circular to why it happened. I had to start working on fiverr to keep my family together despite the 70+ I collect every month it doesn't solve my problem it only pay my monthly bills and food but I earn *2 of that from the little computing I learned myself. I can boast in God today that am better of than last year when I never started fiverr full time. I have USA clients that give me works on a rolling basis but no one would believe I studied botany- PLANT SCIENCE. If you can only think outside the box you will never look for a job again. I have a friend who studied the same course but a react.js professional, he just got a job of 125k today with no connection but just dexterity and a bit of passion to see outside what's outside the computer science curriculum. So THINK THINK AND THINK, That 20k for business may not come o walahi, been there before and I know what am saying, but you have a laptop (am sure of that), you have battery? you have small gen? what are you waiting for?

I have heaed a lot about Fiverr, how does it work?

Thanks

There are fiverr forums here on nairaland you can gain from.
