The Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi has said that he would introduce a law prohibiting poor men from marrying more than one wife, saying there is a connection between polygamy, poverty and terrorism.

He said because muslims practice polygamous marriage, most poor men end up marrying up to four wives with as many as 20 children whom they sometimes don’t train in schools hence, some of them become thugs and terrorists.

The Emir gave the statement during a speech he delivered at a muslim gathering on Sunday. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Emir of Kano “Those of us in the [mainly Muslim] north have all seen the economic consequences of men who are not capable of maintaining one wife, marrying four.

They end up producing 20 children, not educating them, leaving them on the streets, and they end up as thugs and terrorists.” The emir discussed different areas to be covered by the wide-ranging family law, which he said would be passed by the Kano state government.

“The law will address what Islam says on marriage, it will outlaw forced marriages, it will make domestic violence illegal, it will put in conditions that you need to fulfil before you can marry a second wife, it will spell out the responsibilities of a father beyond producing a child.”

“It is a big law which covers a whole range of issues from consent to marriage, to maintenance to divorce, to maintenance of children and inheritance. It will be the first time in northern Nigeria that a Muslim law on personal status will be codified.”

There is polygamy in the south but you don't see people down south blowing themselves over one foreign deity.

There is also poverty in the south but we still haven't witnessed the barbarism of a religious inspired insurgency.

Amir Sanusi the main reason is Islam and nothing else.

Stop dancing around the bush and address the fact that Islam is the main cause and recycler of poverty, ignorance, intolerance and Religious extremism.

This is the only northern king I respect. Frank and outspoken in his comments. He is the only progressive minded king there. If Sanusi had been the leader of Muslims in Nigeria he would have contained extremism in the north unlike some others who are only interested in titles.

God loves this guy very much because he is fearless. God sent him to CBN when Goatluck and the 40 thieves were looting the treasury and he shouted and screamed that Goatluck, Okonjo-Iwella, Diezaini and the 40 thieves were converting Nigeria to their personal business but we did not believe him.

Now, that the North is going more and more backward everyday, God moved Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to the throne of Emir of Kano and he has started telling his people the bitter truth which other Northern leaders are afraid to say. Polygamy and Poverty are two 5 and 6. If IBB had only wife and even after her death, he has remained single, I see no reason why a Civil Servant on Level 10 should have more than one wife and four children.

You don't know Sanusi.

Sanusi will go to Mars and back to find an excuse to blame for the north's backwardness in order to absolve his precious Islam.

The other day he blamed the British for not laying a solid foundation for education in the north while the real case was that the British colonial govt never built schools but the Christian missionaries. Sanusi attended a Christian missionary school, St Anne's, Kaduna for his primary education.
The northern elite had no problem sending their kids to Christian missionary schools that dotted the north but barred their subjects from doing so claiming it was Haram!

What has Sanusi done since he came to the limelight?

Nothing but empty excuses to exonerate his precious Islam of any blame

Polygamy and Poverty are two 5 and 6..

You see how you guys always confuse yourselves.

Polygamy was never by force in Africa before Islam showed up and reduced women to the level of goats.

To be a man of many wives required you had the means of taking up several wives.

When marriage rites in the Islamic north comes down to buying cloth for the wife to be, down south a marriage ceremony no be beans.

Polygamy does not correlate with poverty!

Polygamy in the traditional African setting meant wealth.

A child in the olden days born to a monogamous home was poorer than one born to a polygamous home.

Even up till this day, an Igbo or Effik man with several wives is most likely to be well off.

Facts!

Totally wrong. In the traditionally African setting, a man with very large farm will marry many wives and have many children who will all help him on his large farm at the end of the day, the farm produce will be much which translate into wealth. These children don't pay school fees because they all work at their father's farm. There was almost nothing like house rent, because everyone lived in their parent's house. If you are comparing that to today's setting, then I am sorry that I will keep my mouth shut because I don't have the strength for your argument. But, if you think you are right, how come you have only one wife or you are planning to marry only one wife, why not like five wives of polygamy brings wealth?

Dem dash am wife for free?

Whatever the case, in present day southern Nigeria, polygamy is mostly for rich men.

Islam up north cheapened the process of acquiring a wife that equated marrying a woman to buying a goat.

The north is the problem of Nigeria. Remove the north and see how other regions will develop at a fast rate.

Please tell them sir.

Illiteracy is when you keep having children you can't cater for in the name of religion.

It's a vicious cycle - having children like chickens, most become beggars as you can afford to feed let along send to school
.
They grow up to become liabilities, terrorist, thieves, constituting a nuisance to other folks who practiced family planning and struggled to train theirs.

Imams and other tradition rulers in the north need to start speaking or like our Emir. What rubbish.

I don't Agree with the Emir's backward proposal. Personal freedom should be respected in our society. It's nobodies business how many wives one person has. Let these people learn common sense and virtues of delayed gratification. They as adults should be able to think of long term.

The issue the people you talk about lack self restraint and work ethic. Polygamy is legal everywhere Nigeria. Yet the people in other parts of Nigeria figure out how to use birth control, send kids to school and become productive citezens.

These people don't forget to pray everyday, to bath or eat yet they forget about their children's well being. They forget they need to pay fees for them. They forget children are long term commitment.

What income level does he consider poor anyway?
Who are these women marrying these broke good for nothings?

The house of Saud handed over social powers ( education ,religion , health and reproductive issue etc) to archaic religious mullahs in return for political power .
If you look at the lives of those who wield political power in these Islamic countries, their lives cannot be anymore different from the lives of the masses .
In the summer , They live large in western capitals at the same time their country spread a medieval ideology to people in Africa.

Im surprised there isn't more muslims and people from north speaking out again his backward proposal. Maybe the story get popular later.

All this proposal states is that muslims are to incompetent to think for themselves.
