Emma30:Then you should make your research about a Caucasian sir,and check if it suits your life style. |
Re: topic deleted by oyeyipow(m): 10:42pm On Feb 20, 2017 |
Caucasians are OK but not quite gentle, research St Bernards, they fit ur description perfectly. |

Emma30: This is the beginning of most owner and pet problems. There is NO dog breed anywhere in this world that's born violent. I for one have never seen a violent puppy (please do not confuse destructive with violent). Your dog's temperament is determined by the way you, the owner treats him/her. There are also social and environmental factors that influence your dog's life in general. Some you can control, others you may not be able to control. The St. Bernard has been recommended to you and you have gone ahead to research only this breed. Why not make a detailed research of every breed that fits the description you want and take a decision thereafter. Have you looked at getting a GSD (the slant back variant), Ovcharka, Labrador, Collie. All these are big and hairy breeds and can be trained to be very obedient. That a St. Bernard was good for Mr. A does not mean it will work out good for Mr. B. If you mismanage a St. Bernard, I bet you will see a level of violence you never imagined possible. DidiLove1: I'm sorry I beg to differ from ur opinion. Some dogs are naturally violent, some naturally calm, some are fast learners while some are slow learners, that's why there are preferred dogs for different purposes ranging from security, to hunting to sniffing, guide dogs for blind ppl, just companions for old ppl, or companions for homes with children. There's a reason the military/police/security would rather use GSDs, there's reason y Russians/Ukraine prefer to use Caucasians as shepherd dogs, There's reasons y airport officials prefer to use labrador as sniffer dogs. There's reasons y Rottweilers / Doberman are used as guard dogs. There's a reason y the st Bernard is called a gentle giant. There's a reason y the Lhasa is called a parlour dog. All these were because each dog has a unique feature which is usually exploited for a specific use. So I don't think it's out of place to advise someone based on a tailored/specific preference. The OP also hasn't done anything wrong by researching the recommended specie, if there were others, like one other person recommended Caucasian, OP can choose to do some more homework like you've also suggested. #myopinionthough 1 Like |

yakbauer: I agree. Please can I get an example of a naturally violent dog. The Caucasian is native to Central Asia so why will it not be a shepherd dog of choice for a Russian or Ukrainian? The top 3 sniffer dogs are Bloodhounds, the Basset hound and the Beagle. The Labrador does not even make top 4. The dog of choice for the military is fast becoming the Malinois (Belgian Shepherd). Rottweilers were bred by Germans purely for sheep herding. It is in these climes that we desire them to be guard dogs, probably due to their look. Tell me the reasons why the St Bernard is called the gentle giant. |

DidiLove1: Because it's not as violent compared to other breeds of comparable size, |
Re: topic deleted by DidiLove1: 1:26pm On Feb 21, 2017 |
yakbauer: See below extract: Known as a classic example of a Gentle Giant, the Saint Bernard is calm, patient and sweet with adults, and especially children. However St. Bernards, like all very large dogs, must be well socialized with people and other dogs in order to prevent fearfulness and any possible aggression or territoriality. The biggest threat to small children is being knocked over by this breed's larger size. Overall they are a sweet, gentle, calm, loyal and affectionate breed, and if socialized are very friendly. Because of its large adult size, it is essential that proper training and socialization begin while the St. Bernard is still a puppy, so as to avoid the difficulties that normally accompany training large dogs. An unruly St. Bernard may present problems for even a strong adult, so control needs to be asserted from the beginning of the dog's training. While generally not instinctively protective, a St. Bernard may bark at strangers, and their size makes them good deterrents against possible intruders. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Bernard_(dog) The bolded text simply emphasises my initial submission on the outcome of mismanaging a St Bernard. Each dog to his own. |

DidiLove1: Thanks for the insightful extract. I think it also buttressed my view. My point to be precise is that all animals can be tamed, also any animal can be aggressive when it feels threatened. But levels of aggressiveness differs for different breeds, even the same extract mentions unique calmness that's associated with that breed. I'm countering ur opinion that the breed doesn't matter as any breed can be trained to be calm or aggressive. I'm arguing that some breeds are naturally more aggressive than others, with or without training. Cheers |

coolsegun2002: Bro, no dog is born violent... If Rott A is not violent and Rott B is, then your generalization that Rotts are viokent is so false... |

countsparrow: Some dogs have violent and aggressive nature take it or leave it and science has proven that traits such as intelligence, aggressiveness and violence are transferable from parents to progeny...I agree that training has a lot of role to play |

Ẹ ṣir ó, No dog is born violent. Their temperament is moulded by daily interaction and/or non-interaction with human(s). The issues is that dogs have been mystified, misrepresented and stereotyped using unsubstantiated generalizations. There are indoor rottweilers and there are yard samoyeds. No one shade fits all. ..... My 2 cents |

yakbauer: Please take out time to read about Hulk, the biggest pitbull on record in the world. I own 3 dogs, a lhasa apso, a boerboel mix and a rottweiler. Against stereotype, my rottweiler is the calmest and friendliest of the group while the lhasa remains extremely territorial and quite aggressive to those she's not familiar with. If you were told to take a guess, I bet you would say my rottweiler would be the most aggressive! I post mostly from experience not just from general beliefs or assumptions. |
