africaken254:here lies our last attempt at building an expeditionary armed forces. look at them, imagine what they would have looked like in their better days. all 13 of them rusting away along with our hopes and dreams of seeing a greater Nigerian Airforce. to think we are now begging for Tucanos even after we have acquired these beauties in the past is to show you how corrupt and selfish some of our present civilian defense planners are. Rest in Peace Jaguar, you never had the chance to roar. 4 Likes |

overhypedsteve: All these long stories for a 3rd Generation jet with no radar. Nigeria is not begging to buy Tucanos, we need aeroplanes like the Tucano to prosecute our insurgency in a cost effective manner. It is an operational necessity. There are no hopes and dreams in a 3rd generation fighter in 2017, that jet has been retired by virtually every other user apart from India. That's why we are going for the JF-17 thunder. There is no corruption in the Jaguar, they are lazy stripped down jets sold to Nigeria by the British, who there after slapped sanctions on Nigeria and so we could not buy spares. You should be well aware of your historical facts before passing off comments here with authority. 9 Likes |

overhypedsteve:this is typical of africa government institutions,we let them run into the ground,we need to know what our armed forces are doing constantly.they should be mandated to show the public, their state of preparedness, equipment maintenance, facilities maintenance and any improvement e.t.c it shocks me that i know so much about israel defence force than my own country military force, they regular post videos and videos of their military training exercises, equipment's,social responsibility programs and so much.while its known they are the most secretive military in the world.if we don't keep an eye on men and women of our armed force ,one day we will regret it 2 Likes |

overhypedsteve:if as it is said that they were grounded due to santions, why wasn't some cannibalised to allow some to be airworthy at that like !? iran still has most of its western jets airworthy even during its intense war with iraq and to this day.they have being made airworthy by cannibalsing others for parts, indigenously manufacturing parts and components, also getting parts and components on the black market |

They must have brought those jets outside for a reason ,cos they have always been parked inside their hangers. 1 Like |

Henry240:The jets were delivered in 1984 and at that time a 3rd generation jet meant something. historical facts or no historical facts the reason why we do not make such major purchases like this again is because of the corrupt officials at the helm of affairs. ask yourself these questions, is the Tucano the only Ground attack capable Jet in the Market? is the Tucano the best we can find in the Market? so why is it that it is either the Tucano or nothing else. even when there are better Eastern alternatives. We dont need Airplanes like the Tucanos we need Airplanes to prosecute our counter insurgency operations, no matter where or how they come, forget the cost effective thing poorer nations have fought wars with better assets it just depends on where your interest lies and clearly the interest of our defense planner lies in their pocket. This one is telling me about cost effective, do you think someone that have more than 9.8 million dollar hidden in his sewage tank understand the meaning of "cost effective"?

darknetcom:Im with @Henry240 on this one.....Those Jaguars are nothing more than scrape metal, it would literally cost more to get them operational than it would to buy a brand new F7! What Nigeria need now are dedicated COIN aircraft like the Tucano......although i would much prefer NAF striking a deal with Paramount for the Mwari!! 2 Likes

africaken254: I'm not as well informed on the Jaguar as some of the other aircraft enthusiasts on this forum, but I'd like to point out that the only reason Iran could keep its Western aircraft airworthy was because it purchases the (predominantly US made) parts for them on the black market at exorbitant prices. Some countries that are retiring old US aircraft probably allow their remaining inventories of spares to be sold to Iran through back channels. I once read an interesting book about the Iran-Iraq War in which it mentioned the Iranian military has always had to spent several times the normal market price on spare parts for everything due to sanctions. You can only cannibalise so many parts before you run out, indigenous manufacturing is impossible without the blueprints or the right tooling equipment, and black market parts are also quite expensive. Iran only did the latter because it had no choice. With the amount of money it spent on keeping those old aircraft operational, it could have purchased more brand new aircraft that were far superior. 1 Like |

Henry240:i know what you are talking about. if our leaders really want to equip the armed forces with the amount of money that we all have seen them stealing from it, then "cost" wouldn't ever be the problem. like i said earlier " poorer nations have fought wars with better assets" how can you even put the words cost effective together and use them to describe an aircraft that we have been trying to procure for years without success(even at the high point of the insurgency when we needed them urgently, costing us our pride in the international scene, whereby because of this said Aircraft our Armed forces have been described as unprofessional, human right abusers. fielding the Aircraft might be cost effective but procuring one has cost us a lot as a sovereign state in terms of National pride. |

Hrmnn:good point but they took the difficult route instead buying new oned and now they probably have the means to build their own. Plus sanction would not have allowed them to buy new fighter jet from many countries with the ecveption of maybe Russia and others. |

Henry240:This is the aftermath of the visit from the top leadership of the Nigerian Naval to Sri Lanka and the reciprocal visit from the top leadership of Sri Lanka Results so far Nigeria bought 9 tiger boats from S.L. In return Nigeria sent her SBS to train with can be regarded as one of the most ruthless of Naval SF. I would like the Nigerian Navy and Sri Lankan Navies to get together , it is very doubtful they will be doing Fire drills |

overhypedsteve:The funny thing is that there are so many alternative out there to purchase from, for instance this beautifully crafted piece of machinery the saffers churned out of their brilliant mind (AHRLAC).Theres so many options out there but will our stu pid politicians or military brass attempt. no! so many options available, we need one NOW!! *AHRLAC Holdings Ahrlac (South Africa) *Britten-Norman Defender (U.K.) *FMA IA 58 Pucará (Argentina) *SIAI-Marchetti SF.260 (Italy) *Soko J-20 Kraguj (Yugoslavia / Serbia) *TAI Hürkuş (Turkey) *UTVA Kobac (Serbia) i personally would have recommended the the south african ahrlac (mwari) for payload and sensors or the turkish TAI Hurkus because it looks EXACTLY like the super tucano and has similar spec but with no hulabaloo involved. . The guy up there saying that he doesnt think the airtractor is worth it should please calm down. The airtractor represents massive firepower on a cheap airframe. The only difference between a tucano and an airtractor is probably >> tandem seat and avionics<<... the rest is just aesthetic value. pics 1) AirTractor pic 2) airTractor pic 3)Super Tucano pic 4) Turkish TAI Hukus 1 Like

Do your assignments well. Air tractor won't get to Nigeria. The super Tucano is the best we can get knowing fully Nigeria also signed a MOU on UAV production with a Brazilian company then the reason for going for the Tucano is obvious. 1 Like |

LTGEN: Yes, most of the engine parts for the Iranian F-4 Phantoms were sourced from Israel during the Iran-Iraq War. There's even a Wikipedia article on the topic. No doubt they made a healthy profit. 1 Like |
