africaken254: It design focuses. Combat helcopters focuse on ensuring crew survivability in the event of a crash landing. As for being easier to do a emergency landing, virtue of being a helcopter. |

By all Means lets be a test bed, we were for the CH3. We could order a couple of units and still buy the Tucano. the benefit of the Mwari is greater in the sense that we get to learn a whole lot about air -craft design and production. The knowledge gained will be invaluable in future. Henry240: 5 Likes |

africaken254:yes but the helcopter can put down in a smaller area. A fixed wing needs a rather larger patch to land on. |

When will we on this forum outgrow these childish rants!!!!!! For goodness sake we are supposed to have one single enemy...the Islamic Jihadist.....and not one another. IMO Kenya needs Nigeria as much as Nigeria needs Kenya!! We can learn from each other...compare notes and become better for it. Lets stop bashing ourselves here....That goes for everyone including the South Africans!!! When i read about men like Eeben my hearts leaps with joy...cos it shows we have what it takes to solve all our security challenges...but this would only become possible if we learn to work together Nok234: 4 Likes |

Patented: The truth is if we want huge advantage in aircrafts production, NAF has to employ Aerospace engineers ( I'm not talking about those sent on course to the UK). Those from AFIT are doing well too but we currently need people with vast knowledge in different areas. Aircraft manufacturing is something tough and the best is for NAF is to employ foreign guys first. I have seen some Nigerians with Aerospace engineering degrees from top universities like MIT and others |

tdayof:True and Duly noted. if the Mawri fails we learn, if it succedds we use it and we still learn. we dont have to be able to design and produce an entire aircarft initially. A lot goes into an aircraft and every company that makes them subcontracts parts to other companies. we can start with parts here and there, guidance systems etc and the knowledge gained will have uses beyond aerospace. |

africaken254: I think you're underestimating what it takes to indigenously manufacture the parts to a turbofan aircraft engine 100% from scratch. South Africa could not do this in the early 1990s when it was still trying to build the Atlas Carver. And it had the most advanced aerospace industry in sub-Saharan Africa at the time, worth billions of rand. It is easy to manufacture a copy of a rifle. It's a little more difficult to copy and mass produce the parts of a tank. It's very difficult to manufacture the parts for a complete jet aircraft, especially something as complex as an F-14 Tomcat. You need the right tooling equipment. You need blueprints and diagrams. Most countries that build indigenous parts for their foreign sources aircraft have these things. They also had the company which sold them those aircraft help them set up the factory and train the people working there. That is how Pakistan was able to make spare parts for its Mirage IIIs and keep them flying. Iran has none of the above. I'm not saying they haven't found some way to do it, just that I find it very hard to believe for the reasons above. As for Libya they did not make their own parts for their Mirage F1s, either. The Mirages were all grounded due to lack of spares until 2011 when the NTC took over. The Mirages were then restored to service as part of a 2012 defence cooperation agreement with France, which also provided new parts. Patented: Yes exactly, reason why we need professionals on basic first. To me, I feel we should start with UAV production before going deep into manned aircrafts . |

darknetcom: But still we need air supremacy but only within Nigeria territory. Jets are use for many other things, interception is one od the current requirment for the air force ... Because seriously an Air force need jets that can fight... Huge number of commercial planes fly accross within Nigeria. To defend Nigeria against terrorist act on/or using commercial planes we dont need something that will kill the defence budget JF-17 can do that job & i dont see the need for f-16 for that. Meanwill we are going to need something for foreign affairs, to do some "diplomacy" if required or protect our citizens, companies, ( Interest ) for that I see a ground attack jet (Su34 like that) since in Africa their are no air power, + some cargo C-130H can still do that job. but where we must focus now is on the Navy for sure we loose many billions due to piracy, so many weapons enter the country from there so if we dont want some Biafra II, or some Boko II, we must be ready over there. The only way we are going to go for real air supremacy will be if we remain on the side of sahara oriental ... And not maroc ( between the two we see a partner for agriculture they are rich in phosphat and must choose the good one to back our love for jollof can triger a war lol) at that moment we will have some problem because they are very well equip. I dont know the current position of Nigeria but GEJ & PMB all bavk sahara oriental cause. For me the next senario is if we want to continue what we started with Jammeh, at that moment we will hav many targets so we will need something to really scare dictators ( and I will be in support of it since those guys dont let our companies oparate and give everything to us, france etc... To mainten ther power). and in some country they are back by france like cameroun or gabon... All depends on our foreign policy, the only way to stay like this without air superiority is to be pacifist & accept everuthing western or easter countries will tell us, being pacifist means no Giant of Africa... But since we cant chill, history shows that, I think we should wait for 5 or 10 years before seing air superiority in our inventory. Whats for sure right now, we are going to have an interceptor, a baddes ground attack jet. 2 Likes |

Hrmnn:you don't have to build a whole jet engine, you just have to make worn out or damaged part e.g turbine blades.israel opted to use american made General Electric J79 on its Kfir jet which were modified copies of french Dassault Mirage 5 because it could develop its own jet engine.but here we are talking about someone who has the engine but just need to replace worn out and damaged parts
