The punishment is light, but I guess will serve as a deterrent to others

It's not too small. In the Nigerian military, that is a warrant punishment.

1. He cannot re-engage to serve.

2. At the slightest offence, he'll be dismissed from the Army.

3. He cannot be commissioned.

4. It's a little better than dismissal.

5. He'll have issues with promotion.

6. And a lot more I cannot remember.

If you ask me, the punishment far outweigh the offence. Secondly, besides undergoing IHL, he's still forfeiting his pay. That's two punishment for one offence, which is not a common military practice. Obviously his Charlie Oscar or whoever sanctioned that punishment wasn't objective. If I were him, I'll seek redress.

Good for him.28 days is too small sha .

He should be banned from taking weed also because I don't think a military man in his right senses would venture to beat a woman.

That is good. Whether it is a light punishment or severe punishment the fact remains that the defaulter can not try such rubbish again knowing the dire consequences for re-occurrence of same. Twill also convey a message to other soldiers to be more careful in their P.R during the discharge of their duties.

Wonderful development.

But this is just the beginning. I am currently compiling a long list of civilian brutalisation/human rights abuse incidents perpetrated by these unprofessional and undisciplined animals in the Nigerian Armed Forces, and would publicise them via a well-structured and heavily funded social media platform, with the support of international agencies that I'm currently establishing contacts with.

The already battered image of the Nigerian Armed Forces is just about to get more battered than ever before. This ridiculous sense of superiority and disdain for civilians by Nigerian soldiers has reached its apogee. It's time to take the fight to their doorstep. In a constitutional democracy, the military is SUBORDINATE to civil authority and derives its legitimacy from civil authority. Nigeria's case cannot be different.

Enough is enough.
Please do. Citizens are supposed to love their Armed Forces but I hate Nigerian Military with passion. When I see a soldier killed, I don't know how I feel. I have a feeling of happiness and pain. pain because these soldiers have siblings and parents.

In a press release made available to Politics Nigeria, the Nigerian army has slammed soldier, Suleiman Olamilekan, with a one month jail sentence for assaulting an actress, Ebere Ohakwe on January 30th 2017.

Below is the full statement;

1. In accordance with the Nigerian Army’s policy of zero tolerance to unprofessional conduct as well as its uncompromising stance on discipline and commitment to the rule of law, 6 Division Nigerian Army has charged, tried and found Private Suleiman Olamilekan of 6 Division Garrison, Port Harcourt guilty of the maltreatment of Miss Ebere Ohakwe. He was accordingly sentenced to 28 days Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) and the forfeiture of his salary for same number of days to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

2. It would be recalled that there was a report in the social media that the soldier maltreated one Miss Ebere Ohakwe at Omagwa Checkpoint along Port Harcourt - Onitsha Road on 30th January 2017. This prompted the decision of the authorities of the Headquarters 6 Division to thoroughly investigate the matter with the view to serving justice adequately as required by the laws of the Nigerian Army. Consequently, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Enobong Okon Udoh ordered the immediate arrest of the soldier and his Guard Commander for investigation and disciplinary action. He also invited the victim to his office and assured her that the matter would not be treated lightly.

3. We wish to assure the general public that proactive measures have been put in place to forestall a reoccurrence of such misconduct in the future. We will equally welcome prompt and accurate reports of any such misconduct within Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Delta States to appropriate superior authority via the following numbers: 09072509436, 09072509437 and 09072509438.

4. We also wish to reassure the general public of our commitment to their safety and security as required by the laws of our great nation while soliciting the support and cooperation of all towards eradicating all forms of criminality within our society.

5. You are kindly requested to disseminate this information to the general public. Thank you for your usual cooperation.

When will police have this? Instead of NPF to give quick action punishment to wrong police, they will be telling you they are carrying out investigation looking for ways to DABARU everything. Good one from Army. Police do more arm than police

This is a good move! What I witnessed in 2015 had me shading tears for the first time in public. As a writer, I will surely do something about it in my own capacity.
