I used Dr. Rubina Khan the last time but the clinic was really far from where I stayed. She's such a great person and really helpful. I won't mind a cheaper paed that is near now. However this paperwork and low income thing I don't know
I used hope clinic last year and I told the truth that I am an international patient and will pay cash. I paid $100 for Baby's 2wks visit which also included test(2wks blood work). I believe one should be truth Cos actually if you are not a citizen then why should you fill a low income .......
Its not right.
In this thread we encourage being truthful......
So one can still use hope clinic. Just tell them you are self pay international patient ...simply..

Yes, but ur bill will be based on your income. I filled $200 as monthly income so they generated $30 as my bill.

That's inappropriate, considering you are not a US citizen/resident. The reason they are probably able to give you a reduced bill is because they most likely get federal funding to support lower income US citizens/residents. They would not have given you a reduced bill if you had indicated you were a non-resident alien patient.

As i suspected... Hope is a FQHC

Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) provide comprehensive health care services to underserved communities. Many of the Texans they serve are indigent, uninsured and underserved. Some FQHCs offer additional services, such as dental, mental health or substance abuse treatment. FQHCs are community organizations with defined target populations and service areas. Services are provided to Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, Insured and Uninsured individuals. Patients may be eligible for services based on their family income and on a sliding fee schedule.

This is most likely why the VOs are now denying people who receive large discounts for birthing purposes... the discounts are because the Feds fund the hospitals to provide services to poorer Americans... not to internationals.

You are on point. Every bill is negotiable no stamp on it. I will advice those going to houston to look for hope clinic and use for ur baby's visit after birth. I paid $30 for pku, lab and office visit and they do hearing test for $20 as against the $130 quote the hospital gave me but didn't do it. There charges ranges from $30- $75 depending on your income so when filling the form fill a low amount as ur income so u qualify for the $30 package.

This is straight up fraud.

I guess you are right.avoid if you can or just tell the truth and pay the bill.
I wasn't given any form to fill any income stuff becos I told them i don't fall into that category. So I was given another form for just my baby's details and I saw the doctor. This was baby's 2wks appointment. Used Dr hassen earlier but moved to Richmond so I needed a closer Dr.

Why apply for charity when you are supposed to be able to pay your bills?

"Charity care is a state-mandated and partially state-funded program that allows uninsured or underinsured people to receive inpatient and outpatient care at a reduced cost. Only people who meet certain income and asset criteria are eligible to receive charity care."

Having a baby in the US is not a requirement. If you can't honestly afford it, why not have your baby in Nigeria?

Please experience papas and mamas that used Oakbend and Dr E, I have a few questions about Pead you used.
1. Did you use Pead provided by Oakbend or Personally arrange pead allowed by oakbend medical center?
2. what was the cost for pead recommended by oakbend?
3. Finally, I need recommendation of Paediatrician close to Fresno or pearland?

That won't be necessary. Simply pay your bills in full, as you indicated at your visa interview. Do not accept discounts based on income and do not apply for any form of aid (as a visitor, you are never eligible for any at all times).

Yes I told them I was self paid and I'm paying cash cos I'm an international patient. The person that referred me told me she paid $30 so I insisted on the $30 price beside I don't live there so I don't have a monthly income just filled $200. Besides there are several hope clinics and they said their price ranges from $30- $75. Maybe the city where u used them is more expensive. That's why u paid $100.

What would I have filled I don't work there neither do I back home. Would I have filled $1000? Besides someone referred me there and said she paid $30 so insisted on that amount. So what's the fraud there?

Run run run run.
Pay all your bills by yourself and collect both your account statement and zero balance reciept.
Don't give them the money to pay for you to avoid stories that touch.

The delivery fees are subsidized by US taxpayers... you decide whether you think that is right for you to take advantage of that or not.

There are no "govt hospitals" (maybe VA or military hospitals - these are not accessible to you).

You should be fine at the POE... just make sure you're prepared for a possible denial when you renew your visa. I think its been said here one too many times that "change of intent" letters are a complete waste of time.

They obviously erroneously assumed you were a US citizen. You can't fill "income" since what you earn in Nigeria is not taxable under US laws.

You're paying less for delivery than the average middle class American... again you decide if you think that is right or not.

If u have given birth in the US before how much did u pay? Did u pay the 20,000- 40,000 bill that US citizen pay or u paid max 8,000 bill. Why didn't u insist to pay 20,000 cos u are not a US citizen and didn't they know u are an international patient? They can not erroneously think I'm a US tax payer when I gave them my international passport and insisted I'm paying cash and filled any income cos I don't stay there and didn't know what to fill.

I live here and pay taxes... so do not need to pay cash for birthing... that's what health insurance is for.

It is your responsibility at all times to make sure that you fill in the most accurate information on such forms. The clinic you went to is for indigent Americans (most of whom, unfortunately are minorities), which is why they are supported by federal tax dollars... they obviously assumed you were just one of them (there are plenty of US tax payers with other passports).

Just because you don't know what to fill is not an excuse. You cannot fill in income when you do not earn taxable income in the US. That's basic.

I think this has been hashed out enough. Now you know the right thing to do... if anyone tells you to apply for a discount, simply say no. That "discount" is only possible because someone else (usually the Federal government) is subsidizing your bill. The VOs at the consulate are aware of this... they also have the ability to check if the hospitals/clinics you use are funded by tax dollars. That may be the reason for the increasing visa denials even when you claim to have paid all your bills.

You could save yourself all that money and have your baby in Nigeria though... undecided

I don't blame the VOs... every year health insurance goes up by a minimum of 10% just to accommodate for losses for those who either won't pay their hospital bills or try to cut corners... taking "discounts" they are not entitled to.
