back2sender:The parts of lagos island used by benins, leased and not owned was an outpost to benin soldiers. The aworis, a yoruba group from ife are the settlers all over lagos all the way to some part of ogun like isheri/sango.. They are the white cap chiefs. This is common knowledge. The only property of benin in lagos is the oba of eko's palace(Iga Idunganran). The Eleko owns no land in lagos apart from that in which his palace is built on given to benin by aromire. Dating back to the 15th century, the Lagos Island was originally owned by the island's first inhabitant Chief Aromire, an Ile-Ife nobleman, who used it as a fishing post and pepper farm. The owners/settlers of lagos currently recognized by the government are Aromire, Oloto, Ojora, Onitolo, Onitano, Onikoyi, Oniru, Oluwa, Onisiwo, Eleguishi, Ojomu and Lumegbon. All aworis from Ile ife. Origin of Iga Idunganran. IGA , derived from the Oyo/Ife Yoruba language GAA meaning Royal Home or Palace, IDUN means land, place or sound of while IGANRAN is the Yoruba word for pepper. Iga Idunganran therefore translates to mean the palace built on a pepper farm, Aromire having used the land previously as a farm. Note lagos island and not Lagos. Lagos the state as settlers from all over the yoruba hinterland. The ijebu owns ikorodu. Egun owns badagry. The egbas own a large are too, and the aworis are all over. From the mainland all the way to the Islands. 6 Likes 1 Share |

felixomor:Lagos is a Portuguese word my brother. Did i flog you again! Awww! Sorry. I know you wanna say Eko is coined from Benin language for camp. But the fact that it became a popular name for Lagos back then does not mean it belongs to you guys originally. You have a browser right, just go on Wikipedia and read about Lagos. You should see how you Edo niggas got involved in Lagos affairs in the first place. Or do you want to tell me the Aworis are Edo people also? |

Let me add one more area of Lagos and it is authentic. The area is Isolo. The name came from Iso Olo which means a place where grinding stones are sold especially on market days. The whole area was later called Isolo. |

Nedsnow:Thank you U are on point...............the guy doesn't seems to understand that he can't separate Lagos from SouthWest been Yoruba territory................he should understand that Lagos Island(Isale Eko) is part of Lagos State...........Lagos Island is originally owned by Awori people who migrated from Ile-Ife before the arrival of Benin entourage whose prince once run the affairs of Lagos who gave Lagos Island the name Eko but it doesn't mean Lagos is owned by faraway Bini people in South-south afterall Benin was once ruled by Oranmiyan from Ile-Ife before he left for Oyo............Europeans colonized Africa for many years before they left but they did not wipe away our language and culture |

I disagree with ikeja , I learn that Akeja people from akeja in ota settle down at Ikeja and change the name from akeja to Ikeja today. You can find Akeja people at ota very close to AIT road today |

jd1986: Logically, Berlin Conference couldn't have brought the British to Nigeria. The conference took place in 1886 while Britain bombarded Lagos in 1851. Lagos was ceded to the British in 1861 by King Dosunmu. To the person striving to establish that Benin people brought the Portuguese to Lagos, well, it is possible but retrospective insight into your assertion could say otherwise. If you check your map, Lagos comes first before Benin in a voyage from Portugal by sea. Explorers setting out from Portugal will reach Lagos first before proceeding to Benin shoreline. What's more, Benin City is a hinterland city while Lagos is coastal. Explorers always set out from Portugal by mid to late 15th century and sail very close to the coast of West Africa and return to give account of peoples and lands they encountered. Another set would read the account and set out to go farther than the previous ones. They always berth at any available favourable seashore. So, they would have discovered Lagos before Benin. It is possible that they even heard of Benin from settlers in Lagos because Benin Empire was very influential in that area. Well, what do I know! All these are just speculations albeit based on some facts Read voyages of discovery and exploration with clear mind to understand this. I have a book called 'Ten Who Dared'. I can't borrow anybody; it is my Bible of history of exploration and I don't think it's still available in market. 2 Likes |

Oluwaseun you got that of "Ojota" Wrong am an indigene of Ojota "Ojota" simply mean Oju -Ota(Oju mean A place while Ota is name of Idol we used to Worship)so Ojota mean a place where we used to sacfrice Ota idol. And the place was located at "Idi aba" painted with water colour up till today. |
