I wish to attend a 3 day conference in New york, and afterwards, visit my relatives in Texas for 5days (my duration of stay was indicated 8days in my form). I hope this will not be a problem for me on my interview i.e. indicating both conference and visiting on the same trip or should i just stick with CONFERENCE alone?

would really love to use this opportunity to visit them, its been really long.

Hello house, thanks for ur wonderful information here. my wife won visa lottery in 2011 and am her beneficiary and we went for interview in 2012 January but we were denied then. Now we want to apply for non immigrant visa to travel to usa soon for our wedding anniversary, my question now is: when ask if I have been denied visa before, am I going to fill yes or no? Remember, I am my wife beneficiary in the visa lottery and it is only my wife was interviewed then but we both submitted application and went for interview. Thanks.

Your statement is confusing., but whether you attended the interview or not is inconsequensial. As long as an application was submitted and refused. Then it's a YES.

I suggest honesty.
Add a note stating the lottery refusal
but make sure that your ties to prove return home are strong and your finances robust.

The worst that can happen is a refusal.
If you were to be caught lying then it could be a long ban.

Me : We are going to Tennessee and we only had a layover at doha because we came through qartar airways.

the primary purpose for the visa application is the conference. the secondary purpose is to visit family. mention both with well-detailed explanations for both.

thanks for ur response, there is no need for lie for any reasons, some pple tell me that it is only my wife that should indicate refusal in her form not me, that is y I put it here for more clarification. I don't want to be misinterpreted. If I must indicate I was refused before no problem, I just want to be assure whether to indicate it or not thanks

I am 29yrs old lady married with a kid, work and earn 350k, I applied for visiting, the interview goes thus:

To be honest sometimes people with ties are denied visit visa and most time the denial stem from lack of research,presentation and communication... If you keep changing what you want to do then you will lose focus.
You should check your pros and cons against each other.
Be honest with yourself.

I believe this is what 20% travelers with B1/B2 visa go through.. it's a normal thing I see nothing bad in this... we can only hope to be at our sharpest when something like this happen.

Anything legal and within reason can be done to verify any detail on your ds 160. If one can lie about , then what else did the fellow lie about?
With the seeming wider powers of cbp now, they are getting more brazen in the display (abi exercise) of their powers

1. The fact that your husband did not attend the interview, probably raised a red flag. The VO probably felt that you are trying to use your husband as a tie to your home country, and that he would attend another interview once you got your visa.

2. How did you brother move to the US? If he illegally entered the US, that too could be a red flag.

3. The VO probably is concerned about the welfare of your kid, who will take care of him/her when you are gone?

4. It could also be that the VO does not feel the purpose of the trip, is necessary. How about you say you are representing the family from Nigeria, since all the family can't attend the wedding anniversary - this is an example, simply state the truth but more detailed.

Hello guys, I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone here, I learnt so much from this thread. Here is my transcript for a successful interview today.

VO: Good morning, how are you?
Me: Good morning, i am well.

VO: where are you visiting in the US?
Me: New York, for a conference.

VO: You work at ***** as a doctor right?
Me: Yes please, and I also own my own company, 2 years old with a staff strength of 5.

VO: what is ******(a professional question)
Me: (Smashed her pretty face with an answer)

VO: Why do you have to go for this conference now?
Me: It is vital for my practice because there will be amazing lectures and clinical workshops, and vital for my company because my supplier will be exhibiting and company's presence there is extremely vital.

VO: Are you travelling alone?
Me: Yes I am, but my brother in law, a doctor too, practising in Texas will be attending too. So I travel alone, but I will not be alone.

VO: Are you married?
Me: No please.

VO: travelled before?
Me: No please.

VO: OK, I am going to give you a visa. But you may have to answer some questions at the POE, but don't worry, that's just because you have a relation with same profession in the US who may set you up there and you may not come back. Just be truthful and make sure your intentions are true.
Me: No problem ma'am. Thanks for the heads up.

These people where sharing blue paper like bread today. I guess my confidence helped me there cos am used to seeing a lot of white patients everyday. Wasn't jittery or nervous at all. No documents checked at all.

Remember these VO's are human and have their bias.
Anything could have led to the refusal, I am only giving my own opinion.
