its nothing to do with snow or mud+slush.
why roads detoriate fast in naija is due to bad road design and engineering. Also there are roads that should be off limit to heavy duty vehicles.

Winter tyres? In Nigeria??

I am sure you are currently battling with these questions at the moment.

Sure, some of us drive with winter tyres in Nigeria.. knowingly or unknowingly. The problem is, these winter tyres damage our roads as they become soft and sticky in hot weather thereby peeling the road surface quicker. Some of them even have metal studs/spikes which cause further damage to our roads. You would even hear the noise of the studs grinding on the road or the tyres sticking to the ground when the cars are driving close to you.

How many of us ever did a thorough inspection of the tyres that came with our cars from USA, Canada and Europe? Go check your car tyres right away.. ensure it does not have the M+S symbol which stands for MUD & SNOW and/or the three-peaked mountain with snowflake symbol as seen in the attached picture.

Several accidented cars are shipped to Nigeria and a reasonable chunk of those accidents are caused by snow... which means those cars may have been running on winter tyres.

By law, you are not meant to use these tyres during summer because they are bad for hot and dry pavement. Only summer tyres can give you the safety and performance you need in warm weather.

With their special compounds and tread patterns, winter tyres are designed to stay soft and flexible in cold conditions, providing traction and grip in low temperatures on wet and icy surfaces. But with the hot weather in Nigeria, they lose this advantage, grip declines and the tread starts to wear faster as the tyres become soft and sticks to the hot roads.

That's a lie

Stop blaming Nigerian drivers who are the best drivers in the world

The first mistake you made is by saying that M+S tyres are snow tires, You're a big joke

Dude, are you serious ?? M+S tyres are all season tyres, you can use them in spring, autumn, winter and summer

Snow tyres do not damage asphalt

Go to Maine where it snows all year round or Alaska where it snows 7 months in a year, their roads are in good condition

How do you think that an ordinary snow tyres would cause road damage ?? What then would 18 Wheeler truck tyres do to those roads ?? Use your brain

Road damages occur because of cheap materials used in road construction and poor maintenance

No one in the USA changes their snow tyres and they have good roads

Stop putting your blame on tyres

I would have proved you wrong by going around in the summer and taking pictures of cars that has snow tyres on them and then show you the road they drive it on but i don't have that time to waste on some BS

I will delete my Nairaland account because of this ignorance

Have you seen how oil sands are mined in Canada prairie? Snow chains are not only used on snowy terrain, it can also be used on any terrain difficult to navigate

The OP wrote this based on his assumptions and not on facts. M+S tyres are safe for roads in hot weather. There's no law against their use.

OP u try ,but reverse is the case. Nigeria roads scatter tyres and destroy vehicles. most roads in Nigeria are +15yrs with no maintenance.

Re: How Nigerian Drivers Damage Nigerian Roads With Winter Tyres by sooperrescue(m): 5:49am On Mar 01, 2017
I think the Op was mistaken about M+s beibg winter tyres but for all other issues, yes he is right. There are many factors that destroys the road. Burning tyres on the road aka police on roadblocks destroys the road. All season tyres are not winter but 80% of these tyres are not suitable for our roads. These tyres comes with different temperature ratings like temperature A, B, C. Fitting all season tyres with temperature b is a time bomb waiting to explode and that is the problem on our hands right now. Go to any tyre company and check most of their tyres, they are all temp b and these tyres cannot withstand heat and they can go soft without notice and leave you stranded. The particles used in building the tyres will in the long run affect the state of the road. We all say the US have good roads but if Trump says he is going to build roads, is he building the roads in the desert? 90% of the cars coming into the country comes with temp b and c tyres, that is where we should be very concerned. They are not salvage cars but new cars and good cars and these tyres comes with reduced speed capability rating like S. It reduces your abilty to move faster in winter and summer. The standards organisation of Nigeria is responsible for the tyres being used in the country but we all should join hands with them by not patronising the tyre sellers who are not selling temp a tyres.

OP is right, almost in all EU countries you get a fine for using summer tyres in winter vice verse.

The title and content of your thread have maliciously and ignorantly blamed the poor state of our roads on innocent drivers!

You should be tried and sentence for libel. How the heck could snow tyres damage asphalt? Everyone knows the states of our road is a perfect reflection of the corruption of the land where Government officials share the contract sum with the construction companies and weak and inferior materials are used on our roads.

You owe every Nigerian driver an apology for this careless article.

correct post,my car currently has 3 winter tires, the advantage i experience is a lot of grip on the road, but it does not have studs and it does not wear out as fast as you said, though i did not have this knowledge when i bought them.kudos.

You should produce the pictures of the tyres you saw in Nigeria that you call winter tyres, cos I dont see how a sane person can use such tyres on our roads. The feed back from these tyres is enough to cause deafness to other drivers.

The first time i saw a tyre with metal spikes was with a friend, sincere4u. You can imagine the sound it makes on the ground, quite different from the usual tyres.
He doesn't use that particular car often but i think he needs to read this......reason i mentoned him.

I beg leave me. I'm not the only one with such tyres. Any road they could damage is certainly a scam that should be investigated for corruption.
