Are we moving forward or backward?

Just admit he has made a valid point.

It is always a thing of pride to have majority of your players playing week in week out in top leagues.
And what did Ivory coast achieve with that? It was a lesser fanciful side that finally brought them their continental glory

This comparison is same for most big countries. They have had better teams. Look also at Holland, Italy, Argentina, Sweden, Spain, Czech Rep, Bulgaria. With the exception of Germany, though I still feel their 80s to 90 squad was stronger than the current.
Even come to Africa only CIV and Algeria can boast of a better team than most of their predecessors.

Does it mean that footballing is on a downward trend?
Not to come across as a cynic but I am of the view that modern football is on a downward spiral and nothing is more indicative of this than the fact that for close to eight years now just two footballers have taken turns with the world footballer of the year award. From Marco Van Basten to Ronaldinho and all the greats in between like Rivaldo, Zidane, Ronaldo and as sublime as there were none of them dominated world football as much as Ronaldo and Messi have done in contemporary times. Modern day football lacks flair. It's just passes, running, passes, running (I get tired of it) and there's too much emphasis on raw athleticism and winning. The great 10- the maestro who directs the orchestra- has gradually been phased out. Read what Fabregas had to say about the trend in modern football. http://m.goal.com/s/en-au/news/4030/english-premier-league/2017/02/09/32474462/fabregas-football-has-become-less-about-talent-and-more

Does it mean that footballing is on a downward trend?

Individually, football is because there is so much reliance on team work than individual abilities. The reliance on hard work, tracking back, pressing is to promote team work than individual brilliance.

So there is a definite downward trend when it comes to footballing artistry.

I agree, the 80's and 90's German team are better than the current team. Lothar Matthaus and Rummenigge is enough to show the weight of the team.

Too much flair can get you in trouble with coaches. Stick to the game plan and win. The emphasis on winning is changing the dynamics.

Wrong Comparison particularly where England is concerned. English football has progressed immensely from the predominant kick and rush, muscles and guts football that characterised English football.

The Neville brothers would not smell the current English team. Gary would be in the Championship and Phil would be playing none league for Stockport County.

Shearer would be in the Championship and only Campbell, Mcmanaman, Owen, Beckham would be on the premiership and playing for England.

When Ajax was the power house of European football we had almost half a dozen players in that team. We had Nigerian being the top goal scorer in thier leagues. We had players who were classed as World class in several positions. I did not say best in the World but world class.

This is not progress we are picking players from third rate leagues and teams and a good number of our players are bench warmers and fringe players.

Look at the age Oliseh, Kanu, were at Ajax as teenagers they were first team regulars. How old was Yobo when he was running the show at Everton barely 20 years old. Yakubu was one of the most consistent strikers in Europe.

The issue of attitude has come up, are these crop of players more professional or dedicated. I do not think so. You can't use endeavour and supposed attitude to substitute for class , quality and ability.

What are you saying? Which defending Footballer in English football history can cross like Gary Neville? I do not even know any in European football. Gary Neville mastered it like it was unwrapping Chewing gum. Shearer Championship must be a joke. He was flawless hitting the ball from outside and inside the eighteen. What about the intense stamina Graeme Le Saux. You watch him run up and down the flanks, sending shivers down your spine. What of Gazza (Gascoigne). The old English players were better. Can Dele Alli polish Gazza's shoes. Watch the (I think) semi final game between a brilliant German team against England in Euro 96. The game went into penalties. You see a game with thrills you can not see today. A Super German team with the likes of Hasler and Klinsmann was matched by the English.

Even to the golden generation, with the likes of Lampard, Gérard, Joe Cole, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Defoe, Beckham etc. These guys can not match them.

There is no need jumping to Nigeria. Icon4s even pointed out the Dutch teams of the past compared to today. The Croatian, Yugoslavian and Portuguese team. You are making it look like it is only Nigeria the loss of quality players happened.

Rohr's interview with Fifa.com

Rohr aiming to lead Super Eagles to new heights

Many German coaches such as Otto Pfister, Rudi Gutendorf and Burkhard Ziese have led teams throughout Africa with varying degrees of success. But while the trio represent the old guard of coaches, a new generation has found their way to the continent. FIFA.com spoke exclusively to one of the new breed: Gernot Rohr.

When the 63-year-old took over Nigeria in August last year, the Super Eagles had just failed to qualify for a second CAF Africa Cup of Nations in a row. The disappointment was palpable in the football-mad west African country, having come shortly after lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2013 and competing with distinction at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.

Rohr was thus given a clear directive: ensure the Super Eagles qualify for Russia 2018. Achieving that feat will mean overcoming the so-called 'Group of Death' with Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia standing in the way. The former defender, who became an iconic figure at Bordeaux during his playing days, got off to a winning start with Nigeria, beating Tanzania 1-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier that had already been rendered meaningless after Egypt secured the lone qualifying berth from Group G.

More importantly though, Rohr got the Super Eagles off to a winning start in their World Cup qualifiers, recording a tough 2-1 win in Zambia. Nigeria then collected a confident 3-1 victory at home against Algeria. The six points, coupled with some surprising results in the other games, leaves Nigeria with an early four-point lead.

“Winning our first two matches was a great start, but we will not play again until the end of August and early September, when we face Cameroon,” said Rohr. “They of course are African champions and will be highly motivated to take the form from Gabon into the World Cup qualifiers.

“I do not get carried away. It is a very tough group and nothing has been decided. But I admit that, at the moment, we have a small advantage and if we win our two matches at home against Cameroon and Zambia, we will qualify.”

Blending stars and starlets

Like many of his counterparts throughout Africa, Rohr can call up a host of players plying their trade throughout Europe. But unlike most, Rohr has an array of players who appear regularly in one of the world's toughest leagues: the English Premier League. “As the team and the country had been deeply affected by failing to qualify for the finals in Gabon, I wanted to bring in some younger players into the squad. This, of course, is without closing the door on anyone.”

Rohr handed a first call-up to Isaac Success and also included youngsters like Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho. But the German did not put all his faith into talented youngsters, he included experienced campaigners like Elderson Echiejile, John Ogu and captain John Obi Mikel in his squad.

However, it was not only with the senior side that work needed to be done. Recent results at age-group level had also not been as successful as the past. “This is something that I wanted to help change,” Rohr said. “I also offered to accompany the local selection, even if I was not in charge of it directly. I also said I would keep an eye out for the national women's team. These are some of the things I said I wanted to do when I started in August last year.”

After ending his playing career with Bordeaux in 1989, Rohr moved straight into coaching at the club – first as a youth coach, before taking over the senior side. In 2010, he took his first national team position, leading Gabon into the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations two years later. Since then, stints with Burkina Faso and Niger have followed.

Throughout his coaching career, Rohr has worked with a number of great players. He considers Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to be one of the best. “Under Thomas Tuchel he plays a more central role at Borussia Dortmund than he did under Jurgen Klopp. He has gained in efficiency. One feels that he does not need many opportunities to score.

“For a player who loves depth, his speed is a huge advantage. He has grown as a player and could become even better. With a little improvement to his left foot, his in-depth play and concentration, he would become even more effective. Although he is already one of the best strikers in the world and has the qualities to play at any club.”

Mickael2:

I have told you time and time again that no professional footballer plays only one single position hence the need to look at the formation and watch the first 30 mins of the game atleast. Messi is a RWF naturally but most times he shifts to the AMF position, I can just show you some highlights and you'd be like 'Messi is always out of position', but then if you watch the game you'd know that it's a tactical plan, it doesn't mean that Messi is no longer the RWF it just means that he is a hybrid. So because you know Ndidi's preferred position doesn't mean that he can't be directed by the coach to play as a hybrid.

Granted, I think I have watched like 20 of his games(minus the ones he has played for leicester) and he was hardly ever out of position, maybe like once in 3 games. I have watched even less of Onazi's games(including the ones he has played for the Eagles) and he always gets caught out of position atleast once per game. I have said it time and time again that Onazi and Ndidi can play together, Ndidi as the sitting DMF and Onazi the roaming DMF/midfield destroyer, I have no problem with that but Etebo is already occupying that position for us and if it comes to the DMF position solely, Ndidi takes it home for me
You don't have to know the formation a coach played to understand which position Ndidi played if you have actually watched Ndidi.

Basically every man and his dog knows Ndidi plays as a DM. I can understand the shock finding out that Ndidi's poor positioning have actually resulted in goals conceded by his team.
Please lay off Onazi's back. The guy do not deserve the excessive critism you dish out to him at every turn.

One thing people have to understand is that football academy culture have contributed to lack of flair we see in morden footballers.
Kids at the academy are thought to be polite, decent, less aggressive and pious, they see football as just a routine, while for Street kids it's all about escaping poverty and survival ask Tevez. Determination and the drive to beat his opponent is is what a street kid is cut out for.

Even the Brazilians are complaining about football academies being hijacked by captialists and Drug dealers.
The end result is what we are currently witnessing.

Also the new social culture of Internet and other electronic gadgets have in no small measure contributed to the below average players churned out every year. Kids these days, prefer to stay at home and Facebook or play video games than going out to interact with their mates. I was totally different in the 80s and 90s.

The way football is progressing most not all are beginning to be identified in thier teens as potential World class performers.

By the team Neymar was 17 it was clear he was an exceptional talent. Pogba the same thing also Gabriel, Messi. Ronaldo.

A lot of our young teenage players kill it at youth level and after that nothing happens. Now look at the French young talents under 18 playing as regulars in respective teams.

There are two French Dembele's Killing it at the moment Dembele at Borussia D. and Dembele at Celtic all valued above £50 million. There is younger one at Celtic he is 14 at thirteen he was playing for the reserve team the development squad U21. Right now he us indisputably phenomenal.

What am I getting at if these teenagers were exceptional by now they should be making waves across Europe. They may eventually do so but there is no guarantee.

Belgium have never had it so good they have a one of the best teams in Europe well at least on paper.

Your making it look as if African and European kids have the same opportunities. The Work Permit in England is an example. It is easier for a Fabregas to excel than a Mikel.

When players like Muntari and Yaya Toure got denied work permit.

Academies sometimes teach the flair away from kids.. Every thing is taught the proper way. The reason why African and South American players were full of flair was because they learnt by playing on the street where they can express themselves. You can not learn to be a Kanu or an Okocha in an English Academy, they will teach you out of it. Gone are the days of Gascoigne for England.

Ideye: Mikel Recommended Me To Tianjin TEDA

By Johnny Edward:

Tianjin TEDA new signing, Brown Ideye, has made an interesting revelation that his national team skipper, John Mikel Obi, recommended him to the Chinese Super League Club, reports,
Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

Ideye who is set to make his Chinese Super League debut for Tianjin TEDA against Shandong Luneng on Saturday, joined the club for a reported fee of £10m deal from Olympiacos on deadline day after a move for Sporting Lisbon Netherland striker Bas Dost fell through.

Forget story...if Messi and Ronaldo were around during the Zidane, Rivaldo and Ronaldo days, they would not the smell the World's best player award. These two guys, especially Messi, are extra-terrestrial. Zidane, Ronaldo and Rivaldo are on the same level as Zlatan, Pirlo, Iniesta, Xavi, and Buffon. The only era where Messi and Ronaldo would really have competition is the Maradona era, and even with that, Messi will take the lead.

Bilic: Payet Believes “Amazing” Moses Is Better Than Him

By Johnny Edward:

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic says he has been impressed with the development of Victor Moses since the Nigeria star’s return to Chelsea at the end of last season, reports
Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

Moses spent last season on loan with the Hammers where he scored twice in 26 appearances.

“His potential, his characteristics, his strength, were always amazing,” Bilic said on Thursday during his press conference ahead of the Premier League visit of Chelsea on Monday.

“His pace, quality on the ball and stamina is basically top, top class. Sometimes you have to push him to do it day in day out and now he is doing it.

“That is why he has done amazingly to keep his place in such a good side that probably was not guaranteed for him. It was everything but guaranteed for him in the beginning of the season. But he proved himself.

“If you add on top of that he is playing in a position that is not basically his ideal position – or wasn’t his ideal position. It makes his achievement even greater and he should be very proud of what he has done since the start of the season.”

According to Bilic, former West Ham playmaker Dimitri Payet admitted that Moses was better than himself when they were both at the club last season.

“I remember once we had training and I spoke to Payet during last season,” Bilic added.

“It was him I think and a couple of other players. Payet said that Victor, including himself, is the best player that we have in West Ham. I mean seriously.

“It was about time to show what he had in himself and explode in a positive way – he has done it. He looks on the pitch very concentrated and very serious. He became a tough player.

“I am glad for him. He was our player and we enjoyed that year. He said that he also had good memories of his time here. So I am really glad for him. Of course he had it in him.”

Bilic is also optimistic that injured Andy Carroll will be fit for the Chelsea match.

He said: “He has trained individually for the last few days. He did everything with the fitness guys and joined us yesterday.

“It looks good. And especially with him it will be a week of good training which will be enough for him to be fit for a game so I’m very optimistic about whether he will play or not.”

Ilechukwu: Blame Me For MFM Defeat To Katsina United, We’ll Bounce Back Vs Remo Stars

By James Agberebi:

MFM FC coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, has attributed his team's 2-1 away loss to Katsina United in Wednesday's week 11 of the Nigeria Professional Football League to poor tactical decision on his part,
Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

MFM went into Wednesday's clash against Katsina full of confidence following their 2-1 win against champions Enugu Rangers last week Friday.

But a 90th minute goal from Martins Usule secured the win for Katsina United.

Reacting to the loss, Ilechukwu praises his players for their performance even in the defeat.

"It was a very tough game. Our plan was to go there and get the three points, but unfortunately, we conceded a late goal," Ilechukwu tells
Completesportsnigeria.com.

"I made a mistake by not introducing a defender towards the end of the game. After watching how we've performed, I decided to bring in more strikers instead of holding on to what we already have.

"The players did their best and this is why I don't want to shift the blame to the players because they did very well, but unfortunately, their performance was not rewarded," Ilechukwu laments.

And speaking ahead of this weekend's home tie against bottom club, Remo Stars, Ilechukwu says he expects a difficult encounter but expresses confidence that his team has what it takes to emerge victorious.

"I am expecting a tough game because Remo are down in the league table. They will want to come with determination. But following our loss to Katsina United, we also will be determined to bounce back."

Rohr fails as England battles to keep Lookman

Festus Abu

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has allegedly failed in his attempt to persuade Everton’s rising star Ademola Lookman to commit his international allegiance to Nigeria.

The 19-year-old London-born forward, who joined the Toffees from Charlton Athletic in a deal reportedly worth £11m in January, has represented England’s Under-19s and Under-20s.

But Lookman, who announced himself at Everton with a scintillating goal with his second touch in the 4-0 pounding of Manchester City at Goodison Park on January 15, is eligible to play for Nigeria through his parents.

The Nigeria Football Federation Technical Director Bitrus Bewarang confirmed in January that the NFF was interested in the youngster.

“He has Nigerian parents and we’d need to speak to him first,” BBC Sport quoted Bewarang as saying.

“I saw him against Manchester City and I was excited to see a young player of Nigerian descent shine, so I thought: ‘Why not?’”

He added, “We’ve managed to get players like Moses and Iwobi in the past and Lookman will be a great addition to the national team if we got him.”

Our correspondent learnt that Rohr discussed with the player through his representative in England recently but could not convince him to commit his international allegiance to Nigeria.

Rohr’s discussion with Lookman came after the Daily Mirror reported that the player’s representatives met with some NFF officials in London.

It was learnt that the German manager, who has been scouring Europe for young players with Nigerian roots, wanted to include Lookman in his squad for the London friendly games against Senegal (March 23) and Burkina Faso (March 27) after getting the Dutch-born Tyronne Ebuehi and German-born Naoh-Joel Bazee to commit their international futures to Nigeria.

Versatile Hannover 96 attacker Bazee, 20, and ADO Den Haag right-back Ebuehi, 21, are on Rohr’s 25-man list for the London warm up matches ahead of the Eagles’ Cameroon 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in June.

It was learnt that the English FA had been trying hard to keep Lookman for the Three Lions, after losing Chelsea’s Victor Moses and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi to Nigeria after representing England at youth levels.

Daily Mail reported on Wednesday that the FA, who are still seething over the loss of Moses and Iwobi to Nigeria as well as Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha to Ivory Coast, had “hatched a plan to pluck the best African players in academy football to play for England”.

“There is a belief within the England set-up that Iwobi, despite being only 20, would be in the senior squad now,” Daily Mail wrote.

It added, “The FA are also fearful of losing Everton youngster Ademola Lookman, who was born in Wandsworth in London and has played for England at junior level, to Nigeria.”

Ahmad: Our vision is for a transparent, accountable CAF
By The NFF Tweet

Candidate for the presidency of the Confederation of African Football, Mr. Ahmad Ahmadon Thursday declared that his group is committed to installing new thinking and ideals at the CAF headquarters, if he wins this month’s poll in Addis Ababa.

Ahmad, who is also deputy Senate President of Madagascar, told Nigeria’s Senate President Bukola Saraki, Sports Minister Solomon Dalung and NFF officials in Abuja that African football cannot afford to continue with ancient principles while the rest of the world’s game has been taken over by youthful, dynamic and innovative managers.

“The rest of the world has changed in almost every sphere. Why must African football remain static? We want to bring a breath of fresh air. We are committed to a CAF that is transparent, that is accountable and that is more inclusive of the actors of the game.

“We will open the debate on whether there should be a larger Africa Cup of Nations (with more teams), and we have to think hard about infrastructure, real development, maintenance of facilities and filling the stadia during major competitions.”

The 57 –year old insisted he had not always nursed an ambition to be CAF President, but that he was the candidate of a group that came together after the FIFA Congress in Mexico last year and opted for change.

“There are many reasons why we need change. Presently, too much power is concentrated in the CAF Executive Committee, and we feel that should not be so. There is no separation of powers, and certain individuals feel they should take all the decisions while others applaud.

“At the same time, CAF is too far from its affiliate Member Associations. The CAF President should travel more often to the Federations and help nip in the bud the usual tensions that exist between government and the Federations.

“I have very high regard for Nigeria, for what Nigeria has achieved in football and for being an economic power in the African region. I am really grateful to Mr. Pinnick who has been the strongest voice of my campaign, and I thank the Government of Nigeria for supporting him.”

Senate President Saraki, who received Ahmad and the NFF delegation led by 2nd Vice President/LMC chairman Shehu Dikko in his house, noted: “We are a nation of very passionate football fans. Football, like other areas of life, needs visionary leaders who can institute reforms for good governance.

“We are happy with the developments at FIFA level and we desire the same for CAF. There is need for policies that will stimulate rapid development of African football.”

Sports Minister Dalung affirmed that football is a major unifying factor in Nigeria, a multi-cultural country of over 250 ethnic nationalities and about 170 million people.

“Our country has made, and is still making major contributions to peace and security in several African nations, and has also been making positive contributions in the game of football. Over 70 per cent of Africa’s youth are unemployed, and we believe that with good governance and excellent management of resources, football can provide employment for hundreds of millions of Africa’s young population and by so doing, reduce social vices and restiveness.

“The barriers against Africa competing favourably in the international sphere must be broken. There are a lot of impediments, including poor infrastructure. FIFA should allot more money to Africa for infrastructural development, and there must be equity.

“We cannot afford to remain a mere plucking ground for the European Leagues. The leaders of African football must address these salient issues”.

With Ahmad were Dikko, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi (NFF General Secretary), Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah (proprietor of FC IfeanyiUbah and Chairman of Anambra State FA), Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme (NFF Deputy General Secretary), Mr. Ademola Olajire (NFF Director of Communications) and Mr. Chikelue Iloenyosi (special assistant to NFF President).

Ahmad was first received by the NFF Management at the Glass House, and later visited the office of the League Management Company, where he addressed media representatives, before flying out of Nigeriaon Thursdaynight.

He had arrived in Lagos earlier on Thursday where he was received by NFF President Amaju Pinnick and 1st Vice President Seyi Akinwunmi, before proceeding to Abuja.

Forget story...if Messi and Ronaldo were around during the Zidane, Rivaldo and Ronaldo days, they will the smell the World's best player award.
Granted that Ronaldo and Messi have exceptional talent but for just these two to dominate the scene for this long shows the dearth of quality players in this era. By the way I do not agree that Zidane and Ronaldo were on the same level with the players you mentioned.
