gartamanta: I don't know how you could still continue arguing along this line (going around in circles). Are you denying that Ironsi did not enact decree 34 on 24 May 1966 or that decree 34 was a lie because it did not exist? Are you also denying that decree 34 did not replace the regions with provinces (which he called Group of Provinces); if not, then what is your point? Ok, lets even assume he did not; that he only centralised the government? Please then tell me, isn't stripping the regions off their independence and making them answerable to the central government exactly the fundamental difference and mistake we have inherited from his legacy till today? Even Wikipedia had this to say about Ironsi and decree 34: Though Ironsi tried to dispel this notion by courting the aggrieved ethnic groups through political appointments and patronage, his failure to punish the coup plotters and the promulgation of the now infamous "Decree No. 34"—which abrogated the country's federal structure in exchange for a unitary one— crystallized this conspiracy theory.[12] Kindly then explain what the above in bold pertaining to the decree meant? So what are we talking about? Were Igbos not the first to derail our democracy by military coup, restructure and tamper with our governance system and therefore ultimately responsible for our present wahala? In short, they were the ones that upset the apple cart for which they are now blaming northerners for - take it or leave it. 4 Likes 1 Share |

SIRTee15: Never in that interview did he exonerate Fajuyi involvement in the coup, nor did he say that Fajuyi was begging for Ironsi life. Ademoyega, Nwankwo, William walbe narratives on Fajuyi all corroborates each other and are all in Consonance with rationality. Civil war analysts like Max Sillioun and even controversial Omogui all agree with that. Your Fajuyi was a marked man for death. You can't educate anyone, when you are so intellectually deficient. 2 Likes |

"Fajuyi later sent me outside the government House
to find out what was happening. I met Danjuma,
who was then a major and he was my friend. He
pretended he didn’t know what was happening, he
was asking me, and I said I didn’t know. While I
was trying to go back, one sergeant from Benue
almost shot me, but Danjuma stopped him and
spoke to him in Hausa. Danjuma later told me that
he would like to see Ironsi, so that he could tell
them what to do.
"It was then that Fajuyi came out to find out what
was holding me, and there inside the Government
House Danjuma ordered for his arrest and mine
too. That was when I saw Walbe. Then Fajuyi
asked me to take him to Ironsi so that they will
obey him, that there should be only one person in
charge. So, I took them to Ironsi, and major
Newman, immediately he saw Ironsi, he seized his
crocodile swagger stick, and then they started
asking him about the January coup, he said he
didn’t know about it that he only agreed to be Head
of State so that he can restore confidence and
normalcy. It was immediately they arrested Ironsi
that they turned violent".
The road to the valley of death
They marched us down, Ironsi and myself, to where
Fajuyi was. They used telephone cable to tie my
hands behind and my legs, with a little space to
walk. Same they did to Ironsi, but they removed
his shirt, he wore only trousers, they also tied
Fajuyi. Ironsi was in a Land Rover, Fajuyi in a mini
bus and myself in another bus. They drove us
towards Iwo Road, 10 km from Ibadan, there was a
small forest were they stopped, marched us to the
right hand side of the bush, Fajuyi was leading and
as he tried to cross a small stream, he fell down,
the soldiers were unruly, it appeared some of them
had for the first time taken Indian hemp, so when
he fell down some of them started beating him. 1 Like |

My escape
As Fajuyi fell down and they were beating him,
Sanni Bello came to me and tapped me and said,
we could do something now. It was providence,
may be I was not destined to die. I took a few
steps from them and jumped into a nearby ditch,
all in a split of a second, Bello came and stood by
the ditch and was shouting that I had escaped
pointing at another direction. So the soldiers ran
around that direction shooting into the bush, and
when they felt they must have killed me, they shot
Fajuyi and then Ironsi there, by the side of the
stream. So Bello made sure that he was the last to
leave the place. |

Nwankwo mentioned Walbe and Danjuma in his account below.. And he made it clear that Fajuyi was marked for death too. He can't plead for anyone life when it was he that was marked for death. Now let's see what Danjuma and Walbe said about Fajuyi.]Lt. Col. William Walbe (rtd) said: “……..We arrested him as we arrested Ironsi. We suspected him of being party to the January coup. You remember the Battle Group Course which was held at Abeokuta….Fajuyi was the Commander of the Battle Group Course…All those who took part in the January coup were those who had taken part in that course. It gave us the impression that the Battle Course was arranged for the January coup, so he had to suffer it too. I am sorry about that but that is the nature of the life of a military man……..” General Danjuma confirms this opinion. He says that at another training camp in Kachia commanded by Lt. Col. Fajuyi, Major Nzeogwu rehearsed the assault on Sardauna’s house in the presence of some northern mortar officers who did not appreciate the significance of the exercise until after the coup.In Danjuma’s words: “The chaps could not stomach Fajuyi such that if there was anybody who should die first, as far as they were concerned, it was Fajuyi, not even Ironsi.” |

Even Ademoyega agreed that Fajuyi was in support of the coup and actually did make suggestions to the coup planners. Fajuyi was also instrumental to why Ironsi didn't immediately prosecute the coup boys when the coup failed, because he kept pleading on their behalf before Ironsi. An action that angered the Northern soldiers, erasing any doubt they had about his involvement in the coup a and placing him high in their death llist. 1 Like |

We also considered arresting him at his lodge before he goes to meet with them. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi was the governor of South West at the time, and the head of state, Ironsi, was staying in his house in Ibadan. So we don’t want a situation where they would say he conspired with us. So we decided the best thing to do was to open fire there even if Governor Fajuyi was also caught, so that they would just be buried together, and that was what happened. This was the part of Useni interview you are disfiguring in typical Yoloba agenda to fit into your falsehood and propaganda. Useni was simply trying to exonerate Fajuyi involvement in their choosing of his house to arrest both him and Ironsi. He wasn't exonerating Fajuyi from his involvement in the coup as we now know through Walbe, Danjuma, Nwankwo, and Ademoyega that Fajuyi was neck deep involved in the coup and was even higher on the Northern death list than Ironsi. Yolobas must realize that this is ICT age, and that this generation of Igbo youths are aggressive and with lots of precedence from our front runners to learn from and avoid their mistakes. Especiallly regarding their docility in tackling Yoloba media assassination of Igbo history. We won't allow any Igbophobic falsehood by any Igbophobic group or persons in Nigeria go unchallenged and not exposed as falsehoods using facts and everything else, Yes! 1 Like |

This proves they were looking for an acceptable n convenient collateral damage in any case Ironside won't go down alone....... Of ourselves, fajuyi was a good option...... And that was exactly what useni inferred........ Now according to you, the coup plotters wanted to exonerate fajuyi's house but not fajuyi himself...... Please, what's so special about the house that the northern boys deemed fit to exonerate...... If fajuyi was on their menu list, they will get him...... ItsMeAboki: Ironsi did not replace anything with anything. The way the 4 Regions were when he came is the way they were when he left. Eg. The Eastern Region was made was made up of 20 provinces before Ironsi came in. Basically the Eastern Region was a 'group of 20 provinces' before Ironsi came and that is the way it was when Ironsi left. Each of the 4 Regions were 'groups of provinces'. The only thing Ironsi did was centralise Government, he did not touch the boundaries of any of the 4 Regions. |

They sat down and planned how to kill Aguiyi Ironsi Ironside had been marked for death, they were determined to get him anywhere, anyhow...... Their first attempt was in Kaduna during Ironside first leg nationwide tour...... But the northern emirs prevailed on the boys not to shed ironsi's blood on the northern soil...... And this was exactly what fajuyi was fighting against in Ibadan..... And it further goes to prove useni's assertion that the boys were not willing to kill Ironsi in the midst of emirs..... Now after the counter-coup some people started recollecting how fajuyi handed over the key to the armoury for the jan coup plotters, how he commanded the battle that night dishing out orders bla bla bla......... Show me an excerpt depicting the northern soldiers actually sat down and planned to kill fajuyi and I'll believe he was equally marked down for death..... This is a thorough deposition on what led to the 1966 counter-coup, show me any fajuyi involvement b4 the counter coup http://www.nigerialinks.com/Articles/Siollun.html And here is danjuma account of what happened that night and what he thinks of that ADC from the same tribe with Ironside yet couldn't replicate the heroic display of fajuyi that same night...... gartamanta: You are just arguing blindly and senselessly. You are like a religious fundamentalist who is ready to die defending a false belief. Ironsi destroyed our regional system with decree 34. He is the actual person that created one Nigeria, before Ironsi we had 4 in one Nigeria. Each region controlled its own resources and Government. Ironsi was an opportunist who saw the January coup as an opportunity to abrogate power to himself. If he did not promulgate decree 34 destroying the regions, Gowon would never have been able to use the same degree to change the federation from 4 provinces to 12 states. If Ironsi was not so power hungry, he would have simply prosecuted all involved in the Botched January coup, irrespective of tribe, Punished all those found guilty and handed over power back to the civilians, including the regions. All these could have been achieved within 6 months. If he had done these, he would have become a legend in Nigeria and the whole of Africa. 1 Like |

This interview by danjuma says a lot about what happened the night of the counter-coup in Ibadan. https://maxsiollun./2008/05/28/the-danjuma-interview/ He personally assured fajuyi of his safety and that nothing will happen to him, not once but twice....... Pray, why will one of the main coup plotters guarantee the safety of someone they plan to kill..... He even released n allowed fajuyi to go back inside to negotiate Ironside surrender after he had earler been arrested by the coup plotters...... What manner of benevolence to someone the coupist were determined to kill...... When the coupist waited in vain for fajuyi to show up with Ironside, they went upstairs...... They met fajuyi standing beside Ironsi...... After they were both arrested, the coupist demanded Ironsi involvement in the jan coup but not fajuyi........ I'm yet to see any excerpt detailing the question the coupist directed at fajuyi concerning his involvement in the jan coup..... Oh! I forgot...Fajuyi must have been so guilty n the coupist so convinced that that they never bothered about clarifying his role....... Danjuma admitted things got out of hand when he lost control of the situation to hot tempered, blood thirsty, deeply superstitious, semi literate junior ranked officers...... The instruction was to bring Ironsi down to Lagos for questioning, those boys didn't like that...... They stopped listening to him and at a point he was even fearful of his own life...... These junior officers had only one thing in mind....... Ironsi's blood and they were ready to eliminate anybody that wants to prevent that.... Even the loyal Ironsi ADC, sani bello, a fellow northerner, was arrested n bundled alongside his boss when he wasn't cooperating. It's unfortunate that some unrepentant bigots who suffer from serious inferiority complex will wake up 40 yrs later and start rubbishing the heroic efforts of one of Nigerian finest soldiers Adekunle Fajuyi, all in bid to inflate a non existent n absolutely unnecessary ego. 2 Likes |

wirinet: You guys need to start reading Nigerian history. Under Ironsi, all four Regions were practicing resource control and fiscal practice, even after the enacting of decree 34. Also, Gowon did not use decree 34 to create 12 states. Decree 34 was abolished in January 1967 at Aburi, Gowon announced state creation in May of that year. Ironsi cannot be accused of destroying Regionalism as all 4 Regions maintained their status under Ironsi, all that changed was their relationship with the centre. The person who destroyed Regionalism in Nigeria was Gowon when he created 12 states from the 4 Regions. |

If you have a quote of Danjuma where he exonerated Fajuyi as being innocent, quote it and stop wasting my time. Walbe already explained why Fajuyi had to die. Danjuma corroborated it. No arthur or any one involved in the events of Ironsi and Fajuyi death ever said that Fajuyi was innocent, let alone pleaded for Ironsi not to killed, none! The decree removed all powers from the regions - political, legislative, executive, economic, etc and vested everything in the National Military Government headed by Genera Ironsi. for the purpose of administration each group of provinces shall subject to the authority of the Head of the National Military Government, be under the general direction and control of a Military Governor appointed by the Head of the National Military Government; How was resource control preserved when military governors of the new provinces ate under the control and direction of the national military government. How can there the resource control when the regional civil services have been collapsed into a single national civil service As from the appointed day all offices in the service of the Republic in a civil capacity shall be offices in a single service to be known as the National Public Service; and accordingly all persons who immediately before that day are members of the public service of the Federation or of the public service of a Region shall on that day become members of the National Public Service:Who abolished decree 34 and when? Please provide links or references. The Aburi accord was an agreement between Gowon and Ojukwu that was never implemented. Maybe you guys do not understand what regionalism means. . Fajuyi did not give his
life for Ironsi. It seems he was
a target of the northern
mutineers all along and would
have been killed with Ironsi
regardless. It was the Western
Region publication "Fajuyi The
Great" that started the myth
that Fajuyi "chose to die with
Ironsi". The myth was later
embellished in subsequent
publications. One of the most
ridiculous of which was Fajuyi:
The Martyred soldier, by Sanmi
Ajiki. Ajiki claimed that Fajuyi
told Ironsi: "I make bold to
declare to you that, I am with
you soul, spirit and body. And
mark my words, whatever
happens to you today, happens
to me. I am your true friend,
dear J.U.T like the dove to the
pigeon, and by the grace of our
good God, so will I humbly yet
proudly remain till the very
end." According to Ajiki, Ironsi
replied "Yes! Francis, I retain
my absolute confidence in you.
I have never for once doubted
your integrity." That might
sound nice and heroic for their
family members, but the
accounts given by the soldiers
that were present suggest that
no such fluffy dialogue took
place. ~ Max Silloun 1 Like |
