The House of Representatives wants the FG to give Kogi, Enugu, Anambra oil producing states status

- Representatives of the three states say the government is aware that oil and gas deposits have been found in commercial quantities in Anambra Basin

- The call by the House comes barely four months after the Kogi state House of Assembly urged the FG to accord Kogi the status of an oil producing state


The House of Reps adopted the motion to make Kogi, Enugu, Anambra oil producing states on Thursday, March 9.
The House of Representatives has adopted a resolution calling on the federal government to declare Kogi, Enugu and Anambra as oil producing states.

The resolution was adopted on Thursday, March 9, following of a motion jointly moved by Emmanuel Egwu, Tony Nwoye and Patrick Asadu from the three states respectively.

According to Premium times, Egwu who spoke on the behalf of the three states said the government was aware that oil and gas deposits have been found in commercial quantities in Anambra Basin.


He said: “We are aware that the failure to optimally explore this already established huge deposits in the Anambra Basin which would generate social and economic activities in the Basin has caused disaffection and crisis across those bordering States and occasionally led to bloodshed amongst citizens in the border corridors, where this oil is in high commercial quantity.

Between 1952 and 1986, three companies, namely; Shell BP (now Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Elf (now Total Fina Elf) and Agip Energy had dug 25 exploration wells in this Basin but abandoned them due to the Government policy then that these deposits are to be for strategic reserve.”

Egwu said the lawmakers believe that the declaration of these states as oil producing states will not in any way jeopardise the on-going field tracing and provisional boundary demarcation being carried out by National Boundary Commission among Anambra, Enugu and Kogi States, but will rather aid in determining the percentage of derivation accruable to the three states.

Kogi and Enugu are duly qualified. Note, both Kogi and Anambra have issues with the ownership of that oil producing parts. As, for Enugu, I think coal is a form of fuel, although I stand to be corrected.

Among the 3 states, it is only Anambra that has oil in commercial quantity. What the other 2 states has is not enough for explorers to gamble with. There are oil deposits in almost everywhere but what is usually considered is it's quantity. Only Anambra qualifies for the status.

Coal is not oil but another natural resources altogether on it's own even though it is no longer lucrative in today's world.

Enugu has oil in commercial quantity but it isn't drilled because the higher altitude makes it more difficult. Niger delta is easily drilled because it's low altitude but of all the states in the Biafra, Imo has the most oil but Rivers is the easiest to drill. Anambra is also difficult but not as much as Enugu.

notin like issue. the oil belongs to anambra. apart from the one anambra they drag with kogi there is another two or three oil well that has not been touched while one is being drilled @ aguleri anambra state.

I was in Anambra oil well three days ago work is seriosly going there no issue. Aguleri boys are full in control of that area because we saw them in diffent strategic position well battle ready. But from what i saw it seem like both Communites in Anambra and kogi have demarcate the boundry by themselves.

Exactly what i was about to say

95% of the oil blocks(915 & 916) are totally in Anambra while the overspill of about 5% are in Kogi and Enugu states. The 5% cannot give the 2 states oil producing status. Besides Anambra has been drilling in its own oil wells for the past 2yrs.

chest beater sighted again only IMO as oil. anambra ? maybe that one is just coming up but for Enugu they should stop claiming kogi land in the name of oil they kukuma have coal. has for southwest we are not chest beater our oil exploration is in the hands of private sector so we don't have to compare south west with ugwu exporters

no, there is a minimum quantity of reserve that qualifies a state as oil producing one and surely only Anambra got that.

not all three.
One of the three. That disputed field belongs to one of the three states - and they must resolve that first.
Also, pls its high time they separate bulk oil producers like Delta and Rivers from marginal producers like Edo and Lagos.
Just not the same class as all.
