Good morning. Opened my mail and saw congratulatory message from Uni of California Berkeley. 5/5 and all positive. OMG!!! Admission letter and funding to come weeks later. I dont know what helped my application most, I would really love to let others do same. I have responded to several pms about my application, its just my SOP I have been discussing. I have talked about it here briefly. My LOR were from very good profs and 1 geek. Then average academic profile. My GRE score broke my heart a thousand times. Thank God. Thank you guys (so many names to mention ). This thread played a role definitely. If there is anyone considering Development track, we can discuss in-depth about your application. To anyone that wants to apply to top schools, you can give it a shot and stay positive. But as LagosismyHome said when I started, add more schools, safe schools. Spread your risk. Stage 3: fellowship/funding hunt. That's another big thing to deal with. I will keep pushing. Thank you once again 31 Likes 1 Share |

slimmy2005: I would advice you go for your F-1 alone. Your family should go afterwards for their F-2. If you want her to deliver here, she can go with the B-2 visa and do all the necessary arrangement, that is after you have travelled. She can give birth and change her status to F-2 with your kids Thanks Slimmy2005, I have been thinking about your comments and it is a wise thing to do. W.r.t changing of status from B-2 to F-2, do you know if she would need to return to Nigeria to change it or if the change can be effected in the US without any need to return? Thank you. |

I have a decision to make and I will appreciate your input:
I got a PhD offer from one of the 'University of Texas' schools and I put this school under my SAFE SCHOOL category during my application.
I also got an MSc offer from Duke University but the funding will come from an external organization.
Because of the reputation behind Duke University, and the not-so-good reputation from where I got the PhD offer, I couldn't dismiss the Duke offer easily.
I am willing to do the Msc with Duke and then move on to Phd in Duke or another similarly placed university, however the external organization funding the Msc constrains the recipients to J-1 Visa, meaning you return home for at least 2 years after your schooling. Without this constraint, I will choose the MSc offer from Duke university and sacrifice the two years for another Masters degree. Please does anybody in the house have any experience with J-1 visa or know someone who is currently on J-1?
My little beef with the PhD offer is the kind of of school where I will get placement after my studies. It seems that where you obtained your PhD matters with respect to the kind of schools that give you an offer after your studies. Meaning that only schools in the same league and category as your school will give you tenure offers and not schools in a higher league. Or doesn't it matter?

cc: LagosismyHome, imperiouxx, Oludare01, texrem, slimmy2005, Twoods etc. There are two types of J1 , the one with 2 year home residency requirement and without ........For me , if you plan to stay in the US after graduation then i will not recommend a J1 with 2 years . It usually becomes a problem because you cannot switch to h1B (any H or L visa) until after you have completed 2 years going back or you can get a waiver (but that difficult) ....... . so what you need to confirm if it really has the 2 year requirement . If you dont mind coming back to naija for 2 years after MSC and then going back to your PHD ... that can work too . At that point you have a good MSC on your CV / Resume which might open more PHD funding and even within Duke and by two years you would have fulfilled your 2 years going back . ...overall is something you have to think deeply about Regarding phd and job offer and schools networks .... cant really comments. The J-1 requires the 2 years go-home requirement. Yes one can't switch to H or L visa but can one switch to F-1 at the time of expiry of the 2-year J-1? Hehehe if u think it so easy then everyone would be doing it ... you can switch to J to F , no problem but your 2 years residency requirement is waiting ahead unless you get a waiver... if you dont get a waiver then to switch from J1 to F1 (no problem) but after that to switch to any H visa or adjust your status . It pops up that you need to have completed the 2 years residency due to your previous j1 You can look into waiver process and see if along the line there any similar issues u can tap into and get a waiver for the 2 year residency... others have done so successfully however difficult |
