well i dont know about that. But in my grandmother told me that in her time/her mother's time, this used to happen.
However, the difference is, the wives you marry as a crownprince, would not be the same when you become king. Thats after the seven wives you marry as a crownprince, they would be sacrificed to the gods as you become enthroned. Its said that their blood cleanses the throne and your regime.
It got to a point that once it was time for the crownprince to marry, parents sent away their female daughters to a very far away land because everyone knew they would be killed later and new ones would be married when he becomes king.
It also got to a point that when maidens were no longer found, they started capturing women, married women for the crownprince. And of couse the men had to send their wives out too.
