It wouldn't be wrong to practically say that Chelsea became a popular football club in 2004, before that we were like the Tottenham of today.

This is so apt. Mou would not have cared as much had Conté signed a bunch of new players enroute to sitting atop the league. That way, he would be justified -The players were not good and he overperformed with them the previous year. But seeing this newbie not just top the league but do it with the same alleged washed-up players gotta hurt bad.
