Reps Seek To Remove Power To Appoint EFCC Chairman From President by floss001: 9:52pm On Mar 15, 2017
The House of Representatives moved on Wednesday to strengthen the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to fight corruption by proposing fresh amendments to the EFCC Act, 2004.

Among others, lawmakers want to insulate the anti-graft agency from the influence of the Presidency, enhance its financial autonomy, prescribe tougher penalties for stealing public money and create a special court for speedy trial of cases.

Four consolidated bills seeking to further empower the commission, passed second reading at a session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, in Abuja.

The bills were co-sponsored by the Chairman, House Committee on Financial Crimes, Mr. Kayode Oladele; Mr. Bassey Ewa; Mr. Oladipupo Olatunde; and Mr. Bede Ucehenna-Eke.

One of the key amendments seeks to remove the power of appointing the chairman of the EFCC from the President, to be vested directly in the hands of Nigerians.

Under the extant provisions, the President appoints the chairman and forwards the name to the Senate for approval.

But, in the new proposal, which the House described as “more stringent” in appointing or removing the chairman, members of the public are to appoint the commission’s chairman.

Leading the debate on the proposal, Ewa explained, “This amendment will open up the EFCC so that the President will not be the sole person to either remove or appoint the chairman.

“In this new proposal, it will require a petition from the public to the National Assembly for a resolution.

“This resolution, when passed, will be forwarded to the President. Mr. President shall within one month, either accept the resolution or reject it.

“The National Assembly reserves the power to override his veto of the resolution.”

Ewa noted that this was to guard against the current practice whereby the President would want the chairman to be removed if he was not comfortable with the officer.

it is better that way than allowing Cabals from opposition parties to hijack the institution. The president can't achieve anything in his anti corruption fight if that happens. We all knw,PDP is corruption itself, the corruption fight by the president and EFCC has kept all of them on toes

This is a welcome development as d presidency will nt be able to use d EFCC. As a tool to go after their perceived enemies

Are Ministers part of the presidency? If yes, then you have your answer. Also note that the Presidency alone cannot succeed in Nigeria, they must work with others. Uzor Kalu is expendable as he happens to be an Southern Christian. Still, wait for the outcome of his trial, don't be in a hurry to conclude.

So who's the pure head? Buhari? You make me laugh! Which people financed his campaign packaging and election? Can he do without them? I also made it clear that the president or presidency cannot work alone, it's a democracy and he has wilfully appointed persons as dirty as himself as those are the people he clearly says he's comfortable working with.

You cannot dissociate one from the other...

Really? All former governors first of all have dirty secrets and skeletons. That takes care of Fashola, Amaechi, Ngige. Amaechi has already been indicted by the Panel of Inquiry set up by the Rivers Judiciary yet the EFCC, despite several petitions has turned a blind eye. Amaechi was formerly PDP till he decamped. Unless you accept that there are clean PDP governors which will include Amaechi, then you cannot disregard his culpability. Fashola also has petitions against him. Minister of Interior, Dambazzau was a former COAS, suddenly the panel decided it wasn't necessary to probe or report the outcome of their probe on his role in the Arms deal saga. The present COAS was Head of Procurement sometime within 2010-2014. How did the so-called diversion of funds for arms happen without his knowledge? How does he afford his houses in Dubai? Babachir Lawal has been indicted by the Senate, what has happened? Fashola and Lai Mohammed's ministries have been reported unable to account for some billions of naira in the last 2 years. What has happened? The head of the EFCC himself is already in deep shit and cannot even be confirmed. The budget with its many discrepancies is authored by whose appointees and signed by whom?

hahaha.....lol
Rivers panel of inquiry u said?there was no whr the panel indicted Amaechi, evn Magu asked them to tender the report of indictment they couldn't. They should have proceeded b4 a law court to try him if at all their allegations hold water.
U are relying on hear say, those are not tenable facts bt media trial.Let them submit reports of indictment and not accusations.the persons mentioned above were never indicted in any report bt jst opposition accusations, those are nt premise upon which someone is arraigned

EFCC should take kangaroo set up panel of a man who is 10 times more corrupt than Ameachi.

Is this not the same governor that bribed INEC officials with 350 million. If not for his immunity as a governor, he should state should be prosecuting him now.
