Sen. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment says that the report of the Technical Committee on Minimum Wage and Palliatives will soon be approved by the president.

President Buhari is reportedly set to inaugurate committee on minimum wage
The Minister of Labour and Employment said President Muhammadu Buhari will soon approve the setting up of a 29-man committee to engage organised Labour in negotiating a new national minimum wage for workers.

According to him, the committee’s report will be subjected to the scrutiny of the National Assembly before government’s implementation.

Recall that organised Labour comprising the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has submitted a N56,000 new national minimum wage request to the government.

While addressing reporters in his office after a meeting of the technical committee, Ngige said the committee was yet to be set up.

He noted that the technical committee set up to work out modalities for the review of the palliatives would soon submit its report to the main committee.

On June 3, 2016 a joint technical committee of the Federal Government and organised labour was inaugurated on palliatives and minimum wage.

He however claimed that it was within the ambit of the National Assembly to amend the minimum wage act, since national minimum wage issues are on the exclusive list.

He also said that the main committee made up of eight ministers and the Secretary to Government of the Federation, including Labour leaders.

He said they will adopt or review the report before submitting it to President Buhari who will then approve the composition of the national minimum wage committee, The Nation reports.

Good, but inflation?

Working on the value of the Naira to the dollar is more useful and, Or some 20% salary increase will do

This is a very tricky and delicate matter . . . can't proffer a practical solution without solid data and Intel and in-your-face brainstorming.

If Buhari tries this, he loses my support. It is the most stupid decision. It should not be given any thought. When government is struggling to pay salary, someone wants to increase minimum wage by 200% i.e times 3. I have come to terms with the fact that the problem of Africa is in the head. For Africa to change positively, the people have to change the way they think.

If they can take the country of this recession then increase fine but still in this recession and increasing then am not sure we will ever be out of the recession because it was the recession that brought about hardship in the first place.
