Nigeria, Senegal meet in heavyweight clash in London

Nigeria match winners in Zambia - Kelechi Iheanacho (left) and Alex Iwobi

by Graeme Jackson

West African heavyweights Nigeria and Senegal will meet in a friendly international at the Hive Stadium in London on Thursday night, kick-off at 10pm CAT.

Both teams will be using the match as preparation for group phase qualifiers in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which get underway with matchday one fixtures in June.

The Super Eagles have been drawn in Group E and will begin their campaign with a clash at home to South Africa, while the Teranga Lions start their Group A campaign by hosting Equatorial Guinea.

Nigeria and Senegal have met in 15 official international matches according to FIFA’s statistical database.

The Super Eagles have claimed eight wins compared to four for the Teranga Lions, while three matches have been drawn.

The teams’ most recent meeting was a WAFU Nations Cup finals match in 2010 (not recognised by FIFA as an official match), which was won 2-0 by Nigeria.

The teams have further friendlies lined up for the international window: Nigeria will battle Burkina Faso on March 27, while Senegal take on the Ivory Coast on the same day.

Both teams have called up strong selections for the matches, though Nigeria have suffered a major blow with news that Victor Moses will be unable to feature.

Senegal have had so such issue with star man Sadio Mane, who has promised that the Teranga Lions will get the better of their West African rivals.

Super Eagles Young Players Treating Ahmed Musa With Lot Of Respect

Players of the Super Eagles of Nigeria who are currently in London preparing for tomorrow’s friendly game against Senegal are currently observing their second training session which is their last ahead of the game.

Owngoalnigeria.com correspondent in London reports that the one noticeable trait among the players in the camp is the way they are treating stand in captain Ahmed Musa.

Musa who will captain the team in tomorrow’s game and possibly against Burkina Faso on Monday, has been well received by the players as a senior colleague in the team.

The players of the team usually allow the Leicester City man do most of the demands of the captain, which one of them say it’s just normal as he is the oldest player in the team.

” It’s so normal that we accord him the respect he deserves as the stand in captain and senior player in the team. As you have noticed we are all looking up to him to guide us. He has so far not failed us”, the player told Owngoalnigeria.com.

Exclusive – Goalkeppers Crisis Force Rohr To Draft In England Born Nigerian Shot Stopper For Senegal Clash

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are facing a goalkepper crisis ahead of their friendly game against Senegal billed for Barnet stadium popularly called The Hive Stadium.

Carl Ikeme is the only goalkeeper in the camp of the team, as the other invited goalkeppers are yet to arrive the camp of the team due to issues bothering on visa and travel plans.

FC Ifeanyi Uba shot stopper Ikechukwu Ezenwa left the shores of Nigeria today for London while Chippa United Daniel Akpeyi is not due in until Thursday due to a public holiday in South Africa, which delayed his visa.

Ikeme who isn’t fully fit as he missed the team’s first session is the only player guarantee to be in the squad as a goalkepper. A situation which has lead to talks about inviting a Nigerian goalkepper based in England.

The name of the shot stopper wasn’t given out by the technical crew but Owngoalnigeria.com gathered that talks are already at an advanced stage with the goalkepper, who is a British footballer of Nigerian descent.

From our checks former Charlton Athletics Shot stopper Edward Ogbebor-Onaiwu is the only British Nigerian shot stopper playing for a professional team in England, who can be called up as an emergency back up before the other goalkeppers arrive.

Ogbebor -Onaiwu failed to make Nigerian U-17 team before returning to England, where he joined English League One club AFC Wimbledon. The 16 year old tried his luck at Leicester City and Nottingham Forest before settling for Wimbledon.

Visa Hitch – Ezenwa, Etebo, Akpeyi, Agbo & Musa Mohammed In Danger Of Missing Eagles Game Against Senegal

Nigeria could present a team of players with only four players on the substitute bench against Senegal on Thursday, Owngoalnigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

So far 17 players are in the camp of the team ahead tomorrow’s clash at The Hive, and going by scoops gathered by Owngoalnigeria.com they are the only players expected to dress for the game unless some players arrive the team’s camp.

As exclusively reported by Owngoalnigeria.com, A British born goalkepper of Nigerian descent is already under consideration by coach Gernot Rohr following uncertainty over the quick arrival of Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi.

Akpeyi according to reports has been ruled out of the clash totally, a situation which forced Rohr to hand a call up to the unnamed Nigerian goalkepper born in the United Kingdom.

However, Oghenekaro Etebo, Uche Agbo and Musa Mohammed are also feared out of the clash with Senegal due to visa issues, if they fail to meet up with the team for their last training session by 4pm later today.

Akpeyi Preparing To Jet Off To London After Receiving Good News From UK Embassy

Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is ready to take the next available flight to link up with the Super Eagles in London,
allnigeriasoccer.com has been informed.

Immediately the British Embassy in South Africa opened their offices on Wednesday morning, a staff initiated a telephone call to Akpeyi, informing him that he should come and pick up his visa.

There are five flights today from Johannesburg to London, of which the earliest is a British Airways flight which will arrive the English capital on Thursday morning at 0530 hours.

Therefore, Akpeyi won’t participate in any training session with the national team beforepresumably making the bench against Senegal on Thursday evening.

NFF Explain Why Kingsley Madu, Watford Loanee Agbo Have Not Reported For International Duty

Zulte Waregem wing-back Kingsley Madu and Watford loanee Uche Agbo are both doubtful for the international friendly games with Senegal and Burkina Faso.

And it is not of their own making that the two 21-year-olds have not showed up at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in London.

The Nigeria Football Federation have explained via their official webpage that Madu and Agbo have been delayed by a visa hitch.

Goalkeepers Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi, defenders Musa Mohammed and Elderson Echiejile were in the same boat as Madu and Agbo, but have now sorted out their paperwork.

As for Oghenekaro Etebo, there is nothing new regarding his application for a visa at the British Embassy in Madrid.

Twenty four players are expected to prosecute the friendly matches, all things being equal, following the late withdrawal of Chelsea wing-back Victor Moses, who is being treated for an injury.

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that the Super Eagles will hold their final training session on Wednesday evening ahead of tomorrow’s crucial friendly against Senegal.

The training is scheduled to begin at 1630 hours and only manager Gernot Rohr can determine how long the session will last.

Depending on the weather condition, the national team will have a feel of the Hive Stadium pitch, venue of the friendly match, or the pitches outside.

German tactician Rohr and his lieutenants will observe a minimum of eighteen players at today’s workout following the arrival of Elderson Echieijile and Olarenwaju Kayode at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Tuesday.

Goalkeepers Akpeyi and Ezenwa, Oghenekaro Etebo, Uche Agbo, Kingsley Madu and Musa Mohammed were yet to report to camp as at the time of this report.

(Photo) Kayode Excited To See Ex-Flying Eagles Strike Partner Musa, Omeruo

Austria Vienna striker Olarenwaju Kayode is delighted to link up again with ex-Flying Eagles teammates, Leicester City’s Ahmed Musa and Chelsea loanee Kenneth Omeruo in the Super Eagles camp in London.

Of the 21 players named to the Colombia 2011 World Cup roster, Terna Suswam, Ahmed Musa, Kenneth Omeruo, Uche Nwofor and Ramon Azeez were given opportunities to earn senior caps before Kayode recently got his maiden call-up.

Kayode led the Flying Eagles frontline in Colombia, with Musa operating on the flank, and he ended the tournament as the top scorer of the team with three goals to his name alongside the Foxes number seven.

“Happy to see my 2bro again @ahmedmusa718 and @omeruo @ Crowne Plaza London Ealing,” Kayode posted on social media.

Olarenwaju Kayode first came to limelight after featuring for the Golden Eaglets at the 2009 Fifa U17 World Cup hosted by Nigeria.

On Tuesday, the Senegalese squad started their preparations at the Hive Stadium for the international friendly against Nigeria in unfavorable weather conditions.

Of the 26 invited players, only sixteen have arrived in camp, with the remaining ten stranded in Paris because of lack of visas to the United Kingdom.

Nice set up.

But i think that midfield is too lean especially for the kind of opposition we are facing.

What u have here is a 4-4-2.

I suggest u pull out that Success/Kayode slot and introduce a Central Midfielder.

I would like Onazi in that CM position while Ndidi plays DMF.

FIFA Beach Soccer W/Cup: Nigeria Captain Olawale Targets Quarter-finals

Super Sand Eagles captain, Isiaka Olawale is targeting a quarter-final place at the forthcoming 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup scheduled to hold from 27 April to 7 May 2017 in Bahamas, reports Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

Olawale, 33 will be making his fourth appearance at the championship since making his debut at the tournament at the 2007 edition of the event in Brazil.

The former Giwa FC midfielder who may also be making his final appearance in the competition told FIFA.com in an interview says they won't be underestimating their group opponents.

"All the teams we will be facing are very, very good teams," Olawale said.

"However, and I say that with the utmost of respect to our opponents, we don't have to overestimate anybody.

"We will take each match as it comes. But we will try our very best. We have to be at our best if we want to make it through to the next round. We have faced some of the teams before and we know that any team that has qualified for the World Cup deserves to be there."

The Super Sand Eagles will begins their campaign against Italy at the National Beach Soccer Arena in Nassau on the 27th of April before batting Mexico and Iran on the 29th and 1st of May respectively.

Olawale also revealed how he lured the older players to the squad to help clinch the qualification ticket for the World Cup in Bahamas.

The Super Sand Eagles had failed to qualify for the two previous editions of competition but the return of Abu Azeez, Ogbonnaya Okemmiri, Victor Tale, Godwin Ayalogu helped the former Champions finish second at the 2016 Africa Beach Soccer Cup of Nations in Nigeria.

"Qualifying for the finals was not easy," Olawale continued.
"We have not made it for the last two tournaments and being beaten in the semi-finals by Senegal in the Seychelles and missing out on qualifying for the finals in Portugal was very painful.

In 2013, we were also beaten by Senegal in the last four. So we were very determined.

"For the qualifying tournament this time around, we recalled some of the older players. As captain of the team, I spoke to the players and told them this is a great opportunity. The African championships were in our country, so we had a lot of advantages."

The El Kanemi Warriors midfielder also explained why he gave up on his dreams of featuring for the Super Eagles.

"When Berti Vogts was coach, he called me up and I played a few games for Nigeria," Olawale said.

"I have not given up playing for them again, but I have to be realistic. There are many good Nigerian midfielders and it will not be easy for me to get into the side.

No idea.

With regards to Eto who is supposedly younger than Yak both have been able to be consistent goal scorers in top leagues for a decade until 3,4,5 years ago.

Martins I felt peaked at Inter and Newcastle but he then goes to Sounder and scores 40+ yes it might be the MLS and not a top league.

It's like saying when did Drogba and Or Ian Wright Peak. I am using your age parameters and it doesn't add up. It's much much more reflective of Caucasian players.

Something else apart from Drogba we will not be able to really have a good idea about thier real ages.

I digress but Defoe went to MLS came back then plays for Sunderland and now he is called to England at 34. Why not Obagoal
sir please Nigeria is not England... we should be jostling for young lads like Tammy and co... not players who can't stay with the team...for possible 5 years....
we rather move on or stag behind....
our aim now is building a new team that will shake world soccer
