Please read this painful story as shared on Twitter by user based in Lagos, Damilola.

In the list are the items a Lagos tailor demands from her apprentices before giving them their freedom. List is obviously more than what many Nigerian men pay as bride price.

Naija bloggers!! Fabricators per excellence! Making up "stories" since 14 AD! smiley
It's 'fabrication' to you because Yoruba is involved. If it were Igbo, you and your brother Omenka would be all over the thread by now chanting "ipod Yewt! Jews! Flat heads! Shuku Okike alibamba!"
Hypocrites!

Fabrication ke.

I have a cousin who learnt tailoring. She came to my office one morning and brought the list. Obviously, she was running around to gather the money. The list was ridiculous: crates of eggs for alaga, crates of eggs for Oga agba, this for aladura, that for aladura agba. This list is even small. I think I even saw something like industrial sewing machine on my cousin's list. I told her it was exploitation of the highest order but she told me she must do it or they won't let her have a shop of her own.

Shop of her own like how? In this day and age?

My sis in law went to learn tailoring. She hadn't even finished the learning period but had known enough of what to do. She opened a "shop" in her house and on instagram and has made cool money sewing stylish baby wears to friends and other customers. She currently has more customers than even her tutor.

Do you think she'll wait for a certificate? For what? The tutor now compares notes with her. You think that tutor will now bring a list and tell her to pay?

My dear she might not know the effect now but in future or in a situation where she is seeking to get a contract from a big firm or corporate bodies they might request for her certificate as confirmation or reference, except she just wants to remain same level or on low key.Mind you the richest woman in Nigeria (Folorunsho Alakija)is a certified tailor.

This is not same in Igbo land, in some cases na the master go settle u in the little way he can, helping u locate ur own shop, some even pay for shop rents for u, and most times, they bring in jobs for u( introduce customers to u).

Then if it is the type where u have to learn trade, ur oga go settle u well well, give u goods on credit and even introduce some of his customers to u.

Well, every culture has its unique ways

20 meat pie? From Tastee or Tantis? Really? 3 cartons of milk ? For what?

I've seen some outrageous lists in my time but this is a Joke! I still call bull!!

P.S, Maltina made 2 entries, 2 crates & 6 crates. wink

The bottom 2 crates fall under 15d. Ounje Ile oga lowuro. It is breakfast drink in Oga's house.

And no the list comes to about 150k thereabouts

I'm not surprised! Our apprenticeship program in Yorubaland is oppressive. I have some young people that I'm still trying to help in this direction.

They went in, in most cases, because of poverty. They finish and then hang because of freedom money. Some are orphans. You would think relatives and friends would help but most would look away. The same people who 'can't help' will soon waste money on burial and other ceremonies.

Good point. But was Alakija an engineer or geologist or oil explorer? Did she even know anything about oil prospecting before she got her oil block? See, to become big in a business needs more of networks, and managerial skills. A fashion designer without the skills can open a shop and get those who actually will do the sewing for her. And pls, in this country, if the network is good (and she has a good network of school friends doing we'll for themselves today); certificate is inconsequential. Ask Dino.

It's not a Nigeria thingy...each geographical region with unique life style

in this regard, Igbos offers a soft landing for an apprentice by helping to finance not just h/her freedom but assisting the apprentice to get established after serving the agreed number of years with their masters

meanwhile, the list of items required for marriage in Igbo land can be said to be on the high side while Yorubas might not request half of it from a suitor, so it's vis-veser

Housas in the other way round would frustrate you with religion

Which Organization will ask you for tailoring certificate to give you job. I'm a Cloth designer and i can tell you that the only thing I've ever submitted to a company to get contract is my certificate of incorporation cos of tax issues.

That list is common with Yoruba folks and i do tell people not to do any Freedom from any Shylock Landlord

This is not a Nigerian thing but a Yoruba thing. What the igbo people do for freedom is set up a shop for the apprentice ( I might be wrong tho) but I know the Igbos don't demand this kind of things for freedom....

Maybe to come and knock door for wedding grin
they don't set up a shop for you , they settle you with money so you can start your own .

I told her about opening a shop that they will never know about but she said that if they should know, they would come and raid her shop. Well, I didn't give her any money.

Tailors charge about 10K -15K to sew an outfit in Lagos, no wonder even those living abroad send their Nigerian party outfits to Lagos tailors.
