Petition to Dethrone King Okechukwu Adiukwu of Egberemiri We, the undersigned, concerned and aggrieved citizens of Egberemiri, hereby submit this petition to shed light on the injustices, corruption, and dereliction of duty under the rule of King Okechukwu Adiukwu. His leadership, or lack thereof, has violated our sacred traditions, ignored the welfare of the people, and brought embarrassment to the Egberemiri community. It is an abomination in African culture for a king to rule from a foreign land, yet King Okechukwu Adiukwu remains absent, governing from abroad. This is a blatant disregard for our customs and the very essence of traditional kingship in our land. Lack of Legitimate Authority and Traditional Rites The kingship of Egberemiri is steeped in deep cultural and spiritual significance. A king’s legitimacy is derived not just from political appointment, but through the performance of sacred rituals that connect the ruler to the ancestors, the land, and the people. King Okechukwu Adiukwu, however, ascended to the throne without undergoing these necessary traditional rites. Most glaringly, he does not possess the "Ofo," the sacred staff of office, which symbolizes divine and ancestral approval of his rule. In Igbo cosmology, the "Ofo" is not a mere ornament; it is the spiritual backbone of kingship, representing justice, truth, and the protection of the people. A king without the "Ofo" is akin to a ship without a captain, drifting aimlessly, and incapable of fulfilling his duties. The Ezeship of Egberemiri rightfully belongs to the Oriaku royal family, but through bribery, intimidation, and sycophancy, King Okechukwu Adiukwu was installed without following these sacred customs. His kingship is, therefore, void of any spiritual or cultural legitimacy. Corruption in the Selection Process The installation of King Okechukwu Adiukwu is a textbook example of political corruption. Under the administration of the former governor, Ohakim, new autonomous communities were created as part of a political "send-off" package. In this deeply flawed process, the highest bidder became king, irrespective of their connection to the land or fulfillment of traditional rites. King Okechukwu Adiukwu exploited this system, purchasing his position with financial resources rather than earning it through ancestral right or communal consensus. This act is an affront to the traditions that govern kingship in Igboland. Historically, Igbo kings (Eze) were chosen based on lineage, wisdom, and the ability to maintain harmony between the spiritual and physical worlds. The installation of a king based solely on wealth, bypassing the sacred rites, is not just a violation of tradition but an insult to the very essence of our people. Absence and Neglect of the Community One of the most egregious aspects of King Okechukwu Adiukwu's reign is his physical absence from Egberemiri. A king is not only a political leader but a spiritual and cultural symbol, whose presence is essential for the wellbeing of his people. It is an abomination in African tradition for a king to rule from a foreign land, yet King Okechukwu Adiukwu resides abroad, visiting his community only once or twice in three years. This is not only unacceptable but an outright desecration of the sacred responsibilities of kingship. During critical moments, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Fulani herdsmen crisis in Egberemiri, King Okechukwu Adiukwu was absent, leaving the people without leadership or guidance. Furthermore, the land of Egberemiri has been ravaged by erosion, poverty, and underdevelopment, while King Okechukwu Adiukwu continues to collect salary as king while living abroad, without fulfilling his duties. The role of a king, as enshrined in African tradition, is to be the custodian of the land, the protector of the people, and the intermediary between the living and the ancestors. King Okechukwu Adiukwu has failed in every respect. Intimidation, Abuse of Power, and Oppression Instead of serving as a symbol of unity and justice, King Okechukwu Adiukwu has used his position to intimidate and oppress the people of Egberemiri. He frequently uses security agents and police escorts to harass citizens and suppress legitimate democratic processes. This was evident during the recent election of the President General, where he intervened to halt the process, undermining the will of the people. In addition, King Okechukwu Adiukwu has appointed individuals with questionable character as chiefs and high chiefs, further eroding the credibility and integrity of traditional leadership in Egberemiri. These appointments have divided the community, creating factions and weakening the bonds that hold the village together. Failure to Uphold Tradition and Represent the People A king who fails to uphold tradition is no king at all. King Okechukwu Adiukwu has not performed the traditional rites or coronation ceremonies required to legitimize his rule. His absence from the village and failure to represent the community at the state and federal levels have resulted in Egberemiri being neglected for basic amenities, such as light, transformers, solar streetlights, road construction and development projects, which neighboring communities have received. Historically, an African king is not just a figurehead but a custodian of the people’s welfare, traditions, and development. Kingship requires personal sacrifice, constant presence, and a deep connection to the land and its people—qualities King Okechukwu Adiukwu clearly lacks. Criminal Allegations and Lack of Integrity There are credible reports that King Okechukwu Adiukwu has been imprisoned multiple times in the United States, further tarnishing the reputation of the kingship of Egberemiri. His involvement in criminal activities abroad is a disgrace to the throne and to the people he claims to represent. Integrity is a fundamental requirement for any leader, particularly a traditional ruler, yet King Okechukwu Adiukwu’s background is marred with controversy, bringing shame and disrepute to Egberemiri. The people of Egberemiri can no longer tolerate the illegitimate and corrupt rule of King Okechukwu Adiukwu. His lack of traditional legitimacy, neglect of the community, and abuse of power have caused untold suffering to our people. We demand his immediate dethronement and the installation of the rightful king from the Oriaku/Obilam royal family, who will honor our traditions and serve the people with integrity. We call upon the Imo state government ministary of traditional and chieftaincy affairs, Ezinihitte local government councils Chairman, traditional councils, and all relevant authorities to take immediate action to restore dignity, peace, and rightful leadership to Egberemiri. The future of our community depends on it. Signatories: The Concerned Citizens of Egberemiri 1 Share
