Japanese scientists are planning to drill through the Earth's crust to the molten mantle six miles beneath the ocean floor.

Researchers at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology will start their preliminary studies in September off the coast of Hawaii.

It is hoped that scientists will be able to find out more about how the planet was formed and what the mantle is made of.

JAMSTEC researcher Natsue Abe told CNN: 'We don't know the exact (composition) of the mantle yet.

We have only seen some mantle materials.'The rock is very beautiful, it's kind of a yellowish green.

'Researchers hope drilling will start by 2030 and Ms Abe said she is convinced the project will work.

Drilling could take place off Hawaii, Costa Rica or Mexico.

The drilling will be carried out on JAMSTEC's ship Chikyu, which can bore down three times deeper than similar vessels.

The Japanese government also hope the study will help them understand more about earthquakes, as the country is prone to the natural disasters.

In 2016, there were three earthquakes in Japan, measuring between 6.2 and7 in magnitude.

The preliminary surveys will be carried out on JAMSTEC's deep sea research ship Kairei.

The vessel can send out sonic waves to analyse the ocean floor and the structure of the Earth's crust.

For those of you who want to become a science philanthropist over night sit back and use your head .

I support discoveries , adventures but not this .even if it is ,not japan . What are they trying to do, drill down there and put in some chemicals that will stop japan from being earth quake prone ?(neautralising the magma in that region. Seriously .

I support discoveries that put only you and your yes saying people at risk but not the one that puts the whole earth at risk .

Do you really think I would ever care if Russia goes to war with America ?, i care because it affects everybody not just the two of them . So this affect me , japan should play their suicide mission alone and not bring the rest of the world to this .

If they are not going to discover how man will never die forever down there then it's not worth it.

Why is that lil attempt has been made so far to drill the molten mantle in the earth core Do you think there is no machines to do that Do you know what pressure is found in the earth core How do they intent to contain the gushing out of the molten mantle which will lead to a volcano eruption Until this question is answer - i still stand by my earlier post

Tectonic plate movement, natural crustal disturbance, cracks within the crustal rocks beneath etc...these are natural causes of earthquakes. Now instead of the Japanese to let the sleeping dog lie, they want to artificially disturb the crustal rocks down to the ocean floor. Well, we shall see what becomes the outcome of this, positive or negative! I read drilling commences in 2030 that's 13 years from now if Christ tarries!
