BUKOLA Saraki, President of the Senate, has said that the controversy surrounding the recovery of N13.3 billion ($43.3 million) from an apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been poorly managed by the anti-graft agency and the parties involved.

He also said the EFCC has a responsibility to tell Nigerians who the money belongs to, as it had become embarrassing that up till now there was no clarity on the ownership of the money.

Saraki’s remarks on the cash discovery were made last night on Arise News Night, a current affairs programme on Arise News Network, just as it was gathered that the EFCC has obtained a warrant from a court to search all the apartments in Osborne Towers where the cash was discovered.

The Senate President said what was presently going on was not good for the image of the country, and the National Assembly, as a last resort, might step in if the parties involved are unable to resolve it and tell Nigerians what is going on.

“I believe this is something simple that the organisation (EFCC) should manage, even before the speculation started coming out. The circus has to come to end as to whether it belongs to individuals, companies, agencies or a state government.

“We, however, believe they will sort it out and eventually tell Nigerians who owns the money. Nigerians deserve to know. The circus must stop,” he said.

He said Nigerians should not see the anti-corruption campaign of the present administration as the fight of President Muhammadu Buhari, but should be seen as a Nigerian fight, as it can only be won when viewed as an institutional issue rather than a personal one.

“I believe progress will be made faster if the process is transparent. Those are ways to strengthen institutions. When the process is transparent up to the investigative stage, people will not believe that it is because of this person that so, so, person is being prosecuted.

“Corrupt people are very patient, but with a transparent process, the fight against corruption will be won.

“On our part, we are doing all it takes to strengthen institutions. We have four bills before us, one is with the Constitution Amendment Committee, one has been taken back by the executive,” he said.

When asked if it was a failure of law enforcement that the EFCC did not monitor the Ikoyi apartment, Saraki said: “I would rather not comment and prejudge them because they might come before us.

“But clearly, Nigerians must know, to save us this embarrassment. I believe they should come out and tell us who owns the money. I believe an agency like this should monitor and clear this mess.”

Planting "public funds" here n there by efcc only to confidcate it n make propaganda out of it for 2019 elections is d worst form of corruption

d whistle blowing policy of dis govt has become a business wia by a cabal who want magu retain as efcc chairman collude with "big govt pipul" to obtain govt monies to plant at strategic locations. den whistle to efcc about d monies at d locations to give d impression dat efcc is working. notice dat in most of their STAGE MANAGED raids, d monies ar without owners but in reality nobody will claim d money cos it was govt money in d first place. every thing was stage. most of their whistle blowers too ar fake. some of d so called whistle blowers ar efcc operatives demselves.
as efcc recovers d "planted govt funds", d cabal in conjuction with efcc makes cool 5%. a win win situation for both parties. d cabal make their 5% while magu get his much needed image laundary for buari dullard's govt in preparation for elections in 2019.
if dis deliberately concocted script is not wickedness on d highest level den nijeriyans ar in for it. no be corruption n deception be dis dis is similar to d foriegn currency exchange corruption they did with cbn. making money with public funds at d same time campaigning for 2019 elections using efcc is d worst form of corruption eva invented by man. fighting kworoption indeed. no doubt d monumental corruption currently going on under dis regime has surpass dat of abacha!

at d end of dis charade they call fighting corruption, d total value of real monies recovered will be far far less dan wat was displayed on pictures n youtube videos by efcc propaganda machinery.

d senate should direct efcc to give account of d total monies they recovered since they began their whistle blowing business.

see the crux of the matter is that we should be neutral. buhari and saraki are both corrupt and I don't think it is wise if we start supporting the executive because we love buhari. the senate has the right to confirm or reject magu and summon anybody the deem not performing well, they are simply doing their constitutional duties and don't need to be suppressed by the executive using influenced public opinion.

besides both saraki and buhari na APC

Show us where it is written in the constitution that the senate must confirm the chairman of effcc?. It's only in the EFCC Act and not in the constitution. And when such clash occurs btw the constitution and any other Act, the constitution reigns supreme.

If you can provide any evidence that someone even outside govt surely knows about the money then please present it so that we stop waiting for the FG, Lai Mohammed or EFCC to make an official statesment.

The Constitution empowers the NASS to make laws binding on every citizen. The EFCC is not one of the statutory bodies listed in the Constitution but it has got an establishment Act enacted by the NASS. You don't get to cherry pick which sections to obey or not to obey. If u do that then u question the powers of the NASS to make laws and the validity of the existence of the EFCC itself. The same Act empowers the President to appoint d Chairman subject to the confirmation of the Senate. Why accept the power of the president and deny that of the Senate?

The Constitution is the grundnorm of all other laws but does not contain every law or directive.
