The OP's epistle is one of the longest I have ever bothered to read on Nairaland. It is well written, which is one of its few merits.

I want the OP to know that Britain, our colonial masters have held two referendum since 2014 and another one is scheduled for 2018/19

Scotland is a constituent part of Britain, the 5th richest nation in the world. Despite all the advantages of Scotland being part of Britain, they still agitate to leave Britain. Why? The answer is in one word, sovereignty. The OP is talking about Nigeria, far below Britain, why would the Scots be even thinking of seceding from the 5th richest nation on Earth? And not just Scotland, elements of Northern Ireland want to leave too and join their kith and kin in the Irish Republic. If our own colonial masters can contemplate secession, then who are we that they brought together to say we are indivisible?

The question of Nigeria breaking up or the reasons why it shouldnt break up does not arise. Our colonial masters Britain voted to leave the EU, the single largest market in the world and the richest, who are we to question their democratic decision? It is theirs to make.

The same should be applied to the issue of those who agitate or are agitating to leave the Nigerian colonial contraption called Nigeria. Im an Igbo man, I dont deny that the activities if the colonial masters helped to unify the Igbo nation that used to be a scattered cluster of confederations, but that is no longer the point

The point is who wants to continue being a 'Nigerian' and who does not. Despite the huge potential of Nigeria as the largest black nation on earth, it should the decision of its constituent people to decide if the want to carry on with it same as our colonial masters, Britain, allowed Scotland to decide and will still allow them to decide again in 2018/19.

People can argue the pros and cons of Nigeria being together or breaking up from now to eternity but unless we accept that it is the ultimate right of the people to decide. We must trust the people to decide their fate rather than trusting Lugard to decide it for us. If the people are denied their God given right to decide their fate, then it all means that Nigeria is an instrument of bondage and it will never work
Well said.

Sharing a country with the barbaric north is a huge mistake. They're the main root of all our problems. And it is heart breaking that Yorubas blindly support them!

So for these reasons, it is only prudent for the Igbos to dump Nigeria. The Nigeria project is totally a failure.

Let Igbos go!!!!

While prodigal political elites practise divisive politics, the Nigerian people themselves live in a socio-economic reality of interdependence and integration. The use of oil wealth from the Niger Delta in sustaining state bureaucracies all over the country may be the most obvious example of this. Less remarked is the dependence of southern urbanites on northern produce for food. The Fulanis are the main custodians of Nigeria's livestock population, holding over ten million cattle, twenty million goats and millions of sheep. Their industry significantly accounts for protein consumption in the south. The north remains Nigeria's food basket.
.

While I agree with most of your points, this one does not follow,
you cannot compare a state-owned assets such as oil with an
individual's business such as cattle-rearing.

In modern times, countries don't go hungry for lack of farmers but
for lack of money because their are producers who can produce at
scale provided a country have the means of buying.

A lecturer gave his students a group assignment titled "Does History repeat itself" to determine and come to the next class with their findings. The students after studies research came to this conclusion. "HISTORY DOES NOT REPEAT ITSELF BUT DOING THE SAME THING THE SAME PRODICES THE SAME RESULT" If Nigeria must be better the change we need must not Br unconnected to restructuring or at best disintegration! It is Godly as no Nation has ever remain united forever. But pls let's handle with decorum and respect for life and rule of law. Thank you.

the only option for Nigeria now is to break up cos clearly the Northern part of Nigeria does not see the people from the south as equal and one entity, they are so tribalistic and display religious fanatism. Just imagine the idiot called Buhari calling people from the south 5% percentage ontop our oil wealth that was used to save his life. Let us break up and they should go back to their groundnut pyramid and let us see. Bunch of ingrates

alot of groups feel shortchanged right now.
until there is fairness and equity.

better standard of living (one Alhaji once told me nigerians are living like animals compared to other africa countries grin), there will continue to be cries for breakup.

everyday on NL I see peeps spending/wasting their energy trying to claim superiority over other tribes making same mistake (exact cause of the horror Rwanda genocide). history should be brought back to schools to prevent repitition..

Having said all this, nations are not eternal but finite, expiring when they have outlived their usefulness to history and humanity. Nigeria is no different. Nigeria does not currently face immediate disintegration but a slow and steady erosion of federal authority by sundry paramilitaries, warlords and terrorist gangs, until the nation slips inexorably into failed statehood. Already we see signs of this in the brazen terrorism of pseudo-religious extremists who seek to establish alternate governments as well as the rise of oil-bunkering pirate gangs in our southern coastal waters.

It would be a pity if we were to let Nigeria fail. [s]No one who has studied her history, encountered her acute humanity, sampled her cultural riches and researched the dreams of her founding fathers would fail to sense her ordination for higher purposes.[/s] For us to abort this purpose would be nothing short of cosmic treason. As Eme Awa once remarked, "If we were to dissolve the federation, a future generation of people will pass the verdict that the Nigerian elites committed suicide while of unsound mind." Nigeria has not been tried and found wanting. We simply have not invested enough of our intellectual and moral energies into actualizing her promise.

As for me, there are too many contradictions and injustice already. Some people are so alien to the other. The only thing that unites us is geography, sports and manipulations by politicians. Is there any hope? Yes! As distinct and diverse as we are, tension, fears and diffidence can be avoided with true federalism. Our diversity could be a force but not when people like you come up with concoctions and conjectures to defend a sinking order. Nigeria will definitely disintegrate if we fail to tell ourselves the truth.

Good question.

No bad idea is repeated as constantly as the notion that the solution to chronic violence in Nigeria is for her to "break up." The case for Nigeria's disintegration surfaces routinely after tragic episodes of violence and has emerged following the recent increase in sectarian terrorism. Some perspective is necessary. Since the days before the Civil War, beating the drums of separatism has become a sort of pre-programmed response to national calamity. Rumours of our impending divorce attended the 1964 elections, the June 12 1993 crisis, the death of Moshood Abiola in 1998 and the Sharia controversy in 2001. In 1990, a gang of over-ambitious soldiers attempting to oust the Babangida regime even purported to evict five northern states from the federation. Thus, current debates about the durability of Nigeria are nothing new.

@OP,
Though your intentions may in the right place but,how many times must it repeated to "'one Nigeria''apologists that submissions that riddled with fallacies and lies goes further to widen the divide than repair it.
You can't defuse and dismantle an ideology with lies.
Your submission is clearly mistaken on so many points that it come off as an opinionated rant rather than an intelligible and educated piece.
You are doing no one any good with this,
Kindly do the needful.

Land is a Resource

Fossil fuel is a reigning natural resource and has been extremely valuable within the last two centuries for its use in providing the energy to drive engines. There are numerous other natural resources obtained from the land, but one has to have the land to begin with, before attempting to find out what it may contain. Land is a natural resource of profound importance, after all it is the pieces of land joined together that make the world and the land in your hold is your own share of the globe - at least in physical and geographical terms.
We all know the importance of land and what misery and conflicts arise from the quest for it throughout history. We can safely say that a large proportion of wars fought from thousands of years of man’s existence were related to land - a resource worth fighting for; to concur, to ward off invaders or to physically settle a border disputes. In recent history the colonial wars of the 19th century and the on-going Middle East conflict are perhaps the most well-known to our generation as examples of territorial wars where the goal is land as a resource. Nearer home in Nigeria land disputes are so common you can assume that a couple of disputes are going one point in time somewhere in the country. The 1995 Aguleri/Umuleri land dispute claimed thousands of lives and the land related Ezillo/Ezza conflict in Ebonyi state claimed 150 lives in 2010 and 66 lives in 2012. Land disputes occur even within families often with serious consequences. These few illustrations are just to remind us how precious land and territory is to the humankind.

In relative terms northern states of Nigeria have abundance of land resource occupying 79% of the 923,768 square kilometres that make Nigeria.
Oyo state for example, is the state with the largest land area among the southern states with 28.454 sq km but only bigger than 6 of the 19 states of the north and actually less than half the size of Borno or Niger states. Niger state (76.363sqkm) is 2.6 times the size of Oyo state and 10 times the size of the largest South Eastern state of Enugu (7.161sqkm). The total area of the entire five states of the South East, add to only half the size of Borno state.( Those five states of the South East constitute only 3.1% of the total area of Nigeria and yet according to the last government’s body language they are the favourite for creation of additional states in the country even if only one is decided on.)

With the rather egocentric concept of “resource control” as the vogue in the Nations politics the North must start thinking of how to apply resource control to its expansive asset and of course how to explore and reap the related fortunes. We know that there is no state in the country, north or south , that does not have confirmed mineral deposits under its grounds. A few examples in the wide expanse of land in the northern states are; Iron ore lead and zinc in Benue, Uranium, lead and Zinc in Bauchi, Copper and glass in Kano, Tin columbite and tantalite in plateau, Sapphire, aqua marine, gold etc in Kaduna. Gold and lead in Sokoto kebbi and zamfara. The effort to refine the crude gold mining going on especially in Niger and Zamfara states is a welcome development. We need the support of expert mining countries like South Africa, Chile, China and Australia.

Closely related to land size and climate is agriculture. Despite the years of neglect of the agricultural sector development, farming is still the greatest employer of the labour force especially in the north. Although less than 25% of the arable land of the north is used for agriculture, millions of tons of food and cash crops are produced annually by mainly scattered peasant farmers using simple non mechanised tools. The potential for agricultural development is really immense and requires the will and the planning to execute.
Coming back to resource control, will the north allow free access to it’s own resource (land) by the resource control advocates? Will the cost of land rented or owned be the same for a Nigerian from the resource control zone and the one from another zone? What about other businesses, education, industry, mining estate management, transportation and local air travel, will the taxation be varied as a response to resource control?
Many northerners are of the opinion that the resource control advocates cannot have free access to these resources in the north and they may have to compete in global terms with the Chinese, the Indians the Lebanese etc. for the northern market and other resources hitherto taken for granted. After all, as one child will say to the other, you cannot hold on to your ice cream and still expect to play freely in my fathers vast garden.

Another area to look at is The Federal Capital Territory’s 7300sq Km which was curved out of the states of Niger, Kogi, Nassarawa and Kaduna. Could these states not be compensated for such resource provision to the nation? The federal government should perhaps return the land to these four states and get it back as negotiated rent in the spirit of resource control.
I believe that the north has more potentials that many of the chest beating separatist, the north should not persuade anybody to stay as Nigerian. They can start by withdrawing their federal ministers, federal legislators and all federal government employees including the police and the military and start moving their businesses ,their property and families back to their ethnic enclaves. Then and only then we will know that we they are serious. We are tired of these empty threats. I challenge you to start moving as above.

The only hope for Nigeria to still remain as one is TRUE FEDERALISM. We have less than 30 years to coexist with this our current system.

Anyway, the center is becoming weaker and all the tribes will have this serious talk in a round table whether a section of Nigeria likes it or not.

Men of 1966/67 are getting old, these men are sworn unitarianists. Obj, Buhari, IBB, Gusau, Danjuma etc are getting weaker politically and physically. Their last political fight will be in 2019, by 2023 they won't be able choose who the president will be because they must've lost their powers by then either due to old age,ill health or death.

We must devolve powers from the center to the states if we must survive and thrive as a nation. Failure to do so will give birth to more deadly Tompolos from all the tribes in Niger delta, many different militant sect in the core north, Christian militant sect in the north/middle belt, Nnamdi Kanu successor who'll convince Igbos to carry the arms again and a well armed OPC.

The geographical space called Nigeria will be led by different warlords if we don't change our system now

Whether we admit it or not, our military is getting weaker. Boko Haram war wearing them out and they are active in almost all the states of the federation.

It all started like a joke but look at Boko Haram now. That's how Nigeria will slowly disintegrate if our elites don't do something fast
