PROBLEMS USUALLY ENCOUNTERED IN CUCUMBER CULTIVATION. 1. BITTERNESS IN CUCUMBER : This can be caused by the follow ; * Inconsistent Watering. * Low soil fertility. * Diseased foliage. * Very hot temperature. 2. WEED CONTROL : Weeds are farmers biggest challenge. Controlling weeds is a practice one cannot do without if the plants must be healthy and free from pests and insects attack. The farm must be free from weeds this is because they compete for the soil nutrients with the plants and harbor pests and insects. Weeding farm should be done before transplanting. Note : Chemical herbicides is not safe for use because they can leach into fruits and vegetables. 3.DISEASES AND PESTS OF CUCUMBER : Pest and diseases retard the growth and yeild of the cucumber plant like it does with most other plants .Keep the cucumber plant healthy by fighting and preventing them from pest attack .Keep the farm free from weeds.Apply any organic method of preventing pest like applying wood ash and using Neem oil extracts.Pest are dangerous because they would always cause diseases you will likely encounter and how to combat them. PESTS OF CUCUMBER. (a) Cucumber Beetles : There are two types of beetle which may attack your farm. They include ; *The Stripped cucumber beetle which has 3 yellow and 3 black horizontal stripes respectively. * The spotted cucumber beetle which is also a mixture of yellow and black spotted color. DAMAGES CAUSED. The beetle feeding on the cucumber plant result to a reduced stand ,distorted plants, patched leaves, deformed and small fruits and wilting especially on young seedlings. MANAGEMENT/CONTROL. * Destroy eggs once spotted. * Early detection and prompt insecticide spraying . * Follow general crop practices like intercropping and weeding. (b) Cut Worms :Cut warms are also pest to cucumber cultivation. DAMAGES * Plants are cut off near soil level. * They chew the stems of the cucumber plant. * Roots and leaves are affected. MANAGEMENT/CONTROL. * Spray wood ash at the root of the plant as alternative to chemicals usage. (c) Squash Bugs : Squash bugs are the bane of farmers existence. They are very difficult to kill and cause much havoc.Squash bugs are mostly found on squash plants hence the name. They also appear on cucumber plants. DAMAGES : These bugs inject a toxin into the plant and suck the sap right out of it with their sharp ,sucking mouth parts. This causes the yellow spots that eventually turn brown. The leaves will wilt because the damage prevents the flow of nutrients to the leaves, and then they will dry up and turn black, crisp ,and brittle. The leaves also sometime have ragged holes.Smaller plants will eventually die,and squash bug feeding can decimate young fruit. The wilting can resemble bacterial wilt ,which is a disease spread by cucumber bettles .So be sure to find the bugs or eggs and identify them currently. MEASURES/CONTROL * Early detection is critical .You decide to catch squash bugs before they grow into adults otherwise they can be difficult to kill . * Pick egg masses off the plants in the morning and latter in the day. * Keep checking your plants at least daily rather than go to sleep completely after planting your cucumber. (d) Aphids : Aphids could cause damage to your cucumber by transmitting virus into the plant. SYMPTOMS : The leaves of infected plants may show prominent light green mosaic patterns ,deformation, puckering, blisters, narrow leaves, green vein banding, pale color, the virus may also cause water soaked spots on the fruit. MANAGEMENT/CONTROL * Prevent seedlings from aphids. * Use insecticides that apply . * Eradicate cucubits that have been uprooted before cultivating a new farm which may have host disease. * Use reflective and dark mulches to repel aphids. Use (e) White Fly : They are also threat to cucumber. SYMPTOMS : Young leaves show brightening ,yellowing ,and leaf deformation. Severe infection results in development of shorter internodes and plant stunting. The older leaves show bright yellow spots. MANAGEMENT/CONTROL *Prevent the seedlings from whitefly. * Use insecticides that apply. * Eradicate cucubits that have been uprooted before cultivating a new farm. *Use reflective and dark mulches to repel whitefly. (f) Pickle Worms are also pest to cucumber plants. SYMPTOMS : The presence of larvae which is brownish / greenish with a dark brown or black head cause small holes as they burrow into the fruit or vine to feed. MANAGEMENT/CONTROL * Prevent moth from depositing eggs. * Destroy the eggs if discovered. * Always open up leaves found that are closed up.Most of the time these larva's hide inside.Kill them. (g) Seed Corn Maggot : This is associated with cold, wet, very highly organic soils. DAMAGES * They eat up germinating seeds. * They lay and cause injuries of seedlings. MANAGEMENT/CONTROL *Remove effected seedlings or plant. * Applying soil insecticides. * Replant. (h) Slugs and Snails : These also affect cucumber plants. DAMAGES * They cause large ragged holes in leaves and fruits. * They eat up germinating fruits thereby reducing yeild . MANAGEMENT/CONTROL * handpicking and destroying them whenever they are seen in the farm . * Use applicable pesticides. (i) Thrips : They are also pest that affect cucumber plants. DAMAGES : Young leaves show brightening, yellowing, leaf curling, leaf cupping downward, and leaf deformation. MANAGEMENT/CONTROL * Prevent the seedlings from thrips. * Insecticides treatment as applicable. * Eradicate cucurbits and weeds, which may be as alternate host. * Use reflective mulches to repel thrips and place blue sticky cards throughout the field or farm to trap. CUCUMBER COMMON DISEASES 1. Bacterial Wilt : The bacteria wilt is transmitted by cucumber beetle. SYMPTOMS : Vines start wilting within two weeks of infection, patches appear on the leaves, fruits become small and deformed, yellowing of leaves and stunted growth. MANAGEMENT. * Prevent seedlings from cucumber beetle. * Destroy their eggs once spotted. * Once infected, pull and remove plants away from the farm.2. * Do. not use furrow irrigation to avoid the transmission of the disease the unaffected area. 2.Bacteria Spot . SYMPTOMS : Water soaked spots which may be brown or black on fruits. MANAGEMENT * Remove and destroy infected fruits. *Promote good drainage. * Avoid too much overhead watering. * Do crop rotation. 3. Yellow Mosaic Virus : This is transmitted by Thrips. SYMPTOMS : Silvery and yellowish blotches on young leaves, leaf curling, deformation and cupping couple with reduced plant vigor. MANAGEMENT *Prevent the seedlings from Thrips. * Eradicate cucumbits and weeds which may serve as alternative host . * Treat with applicable insecticides. 4. Green Mosaic Virus : This is transmitted by Aphids. SYMPTOMS : Prominent light green mosaic patterns on infected leaves, deformation, puckering, blisters, narrow Leaves, green vein banding, pale color and water soaked spots on fruits. MANAGEMENT *Prevent seedlings from aphids. *Treat with applicable insecticides. REASONS FOR C - SHAPE CUCUMBER YOU MAY SEE AROUND. When your cucumber fruits are curved or C shaped a couple of things could be responsible such as hot or dry conditions in the farm when the fruits are setting could cause it.Secondly, Inadequate nutrition, pest attack or poor pollination. Where you have a fertile soil and plants are watered properly, poor pollination is a likely culprit. Avoid using pesticides or watering when the bees are at work in the afternoon. Use pesticides and water early in the morning before the the sun rise or late in the evening. |

WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT FIELD ESTABLISHMENT BEFORE PLANTING OF VEGETABLES. 1. LAND PREPARATION : Vegetables differ widely from field crops in their requirements for land preparation and cultural practices because of their differences in their morphologies, growth habit, and socio-economic values. In preparing land for vegetable production, the following factors are taken into consideration : ecological location, mode of cropping, season, crop disposition, and the type of vegetables to be grown. STAGES OF LAND PREPARATION. (a) CLEARING : It is often necessary to remove the vegetation cover when a piece of land is to be used for vegetable production. The land clearing methods may involve removing the remains of previous crops and undergrowth, cutting back the woody shrubs and trees and burning them. Machete is used for clearing in a small scale production, while heavy machine like bulldozer is used in a commercial scale production but with skill not to temper so much with the top soil. (b). LEVELING : When the site has been cleared, uneven land may have to be leveled. This facilitates the process of ploughing, harrowing ridging and layout of the site. (c) TILLAGE : Tillage is the term used for manual or mechanical manipulation of the soil to prepare it for use in crop production. In vegetable production, the main objectives for tillage are to secure increased growth and yields, to obtain suitable seed bed, to eliminate competition with weeds during early growth, improve the physical condition of the soil and conserve its water and nutrient contents. IMPORTANCE OF TILLAGE. 1. Seed bed preparation : A seed bed provides an environment in which a seed can germinate and grow. It is loose, well drained, deep enough, makes good contact with the seed, retains adequate moisture and is free of weeds. 2. Level land : Land leveling may be required to make it amenable to a chosen method of irrigation. 3. Weed Control: Weeds are menace to crop production. They compete with crops for plant environmental factors. They must be controlled before planting and during growth of the crops by appropriate tillage methods. 4. Incorporation of Organic matter and soil amendment : Green manures, crop residues, organic fertilizers can be added to soil by ploughing them under, or mixing at the time of soil preparation. 5. Improved Physical properties of the soil : Compaction of the fields impede drainage, rooting and crop growth. A hard pan also be caused by traffic may be broken up by tillage method. (d) EROSION CONTROL : The soil surface after tillage may be such that it impedes run off. Stubble may be incorporated or ridges constructed to curb erosion. Tillage Tools: Hoe, cutlass, Garden fork, Hand fork, disc plough, disc harrow (e) CONSERVATION MEASURES : Most suitable land for vegetable growing in the humid tropics is usually sloppy. When such site has to be used for growing vegetables, soil conservation measure must be carried to prevent top soil from being washed away. After clearing, ploughing and ridging, the surface of the soil is in a very unstable condition unless efficient conservation measures are adopted. The most frequently used methods include the following: (i) Terracing: This is the most traditional methods used in the prevention of erosion and is effective on land which has a fairly steep slope. It is obtained by constructing flat areas along the main contours of the land. (ii) Cover Crops: These are planted to prevent exposure of the soil from direct solar radiation and falling rain when any part of the farmland is not used for planting. The most suitable cover crops are the forage legumes such as beans, cowpea, groundnut, sorghum e.t.c. the leaves of which will provide cover over the land. These crops also improve the fertility of the soil. (iii) Strip cropping: is a method of farming which involves cultivating a field partitioned into long, narrow strips which are alternated in a crop rotation system. It is used when a slope is too steep or when there is no alternative method of preventing soil erosion. The most common crop choices for strip cropping are closely sown crops such as hay, wheat, or other forages which are alternated with strips of row crops, such as corn, soybeans, cotton, or sugar beets. The forages serve primarily as cover crops . (2) PLANTING : After land preparation processes planting begins. Vegetables can be propagated either by direct sowing or transplanting methods. PLANTING METHODS . (a) Direct sowing: Vegetables are sowed either by broadcasting or by seed drilling methods. (i) Broadcasting method: In broadcasting, seeds are spread over the prepared land by throwing small quantities of the seeds into the air close to the surface of the prepared land. Broadcasting is the normal practice in sowing seeds of most leafy vegetables . (ii) Seed drilling method: This is a method for planting small seeded vegetables in rows. Shallow furrows are made at the spacing recommended for the crop and the seed drilled along the furrows. This method can also be used for some leafy vegetables. (iii) Transplanting method: Vegetable seedlings are first raised in the nursery for a required period of time before they are transplanted on the field. Seedlings are transplanted in the morning or in the evening to avoid transplanting shock. Vegetables like tomato, pepper, cabbage, egg plant, garden egg are planted by using transplanting method. TRANSPLANTING TECHNIQUES (i) Clearing of site. ( ii) Removal of trash by burning. ( iii) Preparation of bed. ( iv) . Seedling sowing. ( v.) Watering (vi) Erecting of permanent supports for shading. ROUTINE OPERATIONS AFTER PLANTING. (a) Thinning : Thinning of vegetable is done to reduce the number of seedlings per stand when planted in the farm. It is also used to obtain regular spacing and plant population when sowing is done in drills by removing the weakest seedlings or those infected by diseases or damaged by insect pests. (b) Supplying: This is the practice of providing missing stands of vegetables planted by direct sowing as a result of poor emergence or when seedlings are damaged by pests. The essence of seed supply is to maintain correct plant population. Supplying of seeds has to be carried out as early as possible after emergence. (c) Staking: This is usually required for vegetables with climbing growth habit such as fluted pumpkin,Cucumber, ito-melon or those with weak stems such as tomato. Staking is done to provide support for the plant to climb and display the leaves for photosynthesis to take place. The support allows the plant to carry more load without touching the soil thus enhancing the quality of the fruit. Stake can be made from bamboo or other available wood. (d) Mulching: A mulch is a layer of plant residue or other materials which is applied to the surface of the soil in order to reduce evaporation, run-off or to prevent weed growth. The purpose of mulching is to conserve soil moisture. Mulching also ensure clean fruit, hasten maturity and increase yields. Most vegetables grown in the humid or semi-arid region, particularly those wit fairly long duration such as pepper, egg plant and tomatoes, benefit from mulching. (e) Watering: One of the most critical inputs to vegetable production in semi-arid areas, dry season farming and nursery establishment is water. During the dry season or off season, the source of water for vegetable growing is from irrigation while in the wet season, rainfall is the source of water. Young vegetable seedlings in the nursery or in the field should be watered in the early morning or in the evening. Watering should be done before transplanting particularly in the evening. Over-watering can be very harmful and can encourage the development of pathogenic diseases and also cause mechanical damage to the seedlings. (f) Fertilizer application: This is an important variable cost in vegetable production, As all vegetables, particularly the leafy grow quickly, they must be provided with ample supplies of nutrients such as nitrogen. Application of N fertilizer has been shown to increase yield and to enhance the content of mineral elements such as Ca, P, Na, Zn and Mg. In some tropical leafy vegetables, organic fertilizers or other sources of P and K can be applied as pre-plant basal dressing or after the plants have become established as post planting application. (g) Weeding: Weed is any plant that grows where it is not wanted. Weed can reduce yield up to 40-60% if not controlled. Weeds can be controlled using cultural, physical, mechanical and biological methods. Weed seeds and rhizomes can be killed using physical method during land preparation by burning. Mulching of soil can also be used to smother weeds. Intercropping of spreading vegetables like melon with some erect and broad leaf crop like okra can provide ecological protection against weed development. Hoeing, pulling and roguing are carried out during the early stages of growth. Chemical weed control is applied in commercially grown vegetable crops though constitute to environmental pollution.A new weed controller invented known as Roll weeder can also be use to Control weed keys manually. 3. PEST AND DISEASE CONTROL : Attack by pest and disease is one of the major factors militating against increased vegetable production in the tropics. Insects and disease infestation in vegetable crops bring about heavy losses through yield reduction, lowered quality of produce, increased costs of production and harvests. CONTROL MEASURES (i) Planting of high quality, disease-free seed expecially hybrid F1 seeds which you can get from SEEDWORLD . (ii) Use of disease resistant seed varieties. (iii) Use of vegetables best suited to climate and soil. (iv). Weed control. (v) Destroy the remains of annual crop after harvest to prevent pest build-up. (vi) Good crop rotation practices and good farming practices must always be observed. (vii) Destroy contaminated plants. I believe with all these practices properly observed, i see us making good progress in our farming ventures.I wish u all a happy Sunday .From SEEDWORLD. |

Gdm all.Hybrid seeds differ from open pollinated seeds.Open pollinated seeds are seeds that a farmer gets from seed saved after harvest from an open-pollinated variety which can be grown in subsequent years and will produce same as the parent plant the seed came from provided that it does not cross-pollinate with another variety. However, hybrid seeds are seed produced by cross-pollinated plants. It involves cross breeding different specie of plants to get an hybrid. They don't produce same results after harvest,so can't be grown subsequently .You will have to buy them in another planting season. However, hybrid seeds produces high Yeild and are mostly resistance to most crop diseases. |
