qizick:Most schools abroad consider you for both admission and scholarship together. But you can still apply for external scholarship such as fulbright, Chevening, etc. 80% of all PhD courses in US and Canada are fully funded and you don't need to have a masters degree before applying, so I'll suggest you try PhD program especially if your course is within STEM majors 2 Likes |

qizick:Unfortunately I can't tell you specific schools to apply since our major isn't the same. This is what I'll advice you to do: 1. I can send you the list of all American universities, if you're meticulous enough, you can search the schools on Google to see if they're offering your major or better still, search for all schools offering your course in Google. For example, your search can be like this ' list of US schools offering Geography at graduate (MSc, PhD) level as not all schools have graduate programmes for their undergraduate programmes. 2. Now that you know the schools offering your course, search for the school on Google, include your major in the search to expedite the process. Most times Google will bring the address of the graduate programme, if it doesn't, enter the general departmental website and navigate to graduate study. 3. Carefully read their admission requirements such as gre and TOEFL (if necessary) that you need. Let's say if the school needs 310 on the gre, your target should be 315+. 4. Read their FAQS to get further information, if need be, contact the graduate coordinator, his/her email address will be on the site. 5. Now read their funding opportunities, most schools will tell you all PhD students are fully funded, others may say they fund top 20 or so. Some will explicitly tell you that there's no funding for MSc students while others fund but priority given to PhD students. With this you can decide whether to apply for MSc or PhD program. NB MSc is not a prerequisite for PhD program in most schools. 6. Based on the above information, you can start eliminating schools from your list. With these, I believe you'll be able to make better, informed decision. Good luck to all of us 3 Likes 3 Shares |

From your expressions, I just got to know that MSC is not needed to pursue a PhD program. That caught my attention. Can you please give me sound advice on the following scenario? I have a B.Tech in construction economics, second class honours upper division (4.06/5.00) and would like to pursue a career in academics, up to PhD level. My first instinct is to enrol for MSC before going for PhD. Now that I got knowledge of this direct access to PhD program, I was impressed. How do you think I should go about it? Thanks adetola007: |

QSFemi:It's no longer news that people are doing PhD without masters. I have 2 senior colleagues currently enrolled at University of Texas at Austin and University of Kentucky. That being said, I believe you're qualified to applying, all US schools require a minimum of 3.0 on a scale of 4. Try converting your score to a scale of 4 online here http://www.wes.org/students/igpacalc.asp .This will be you a rough estimate on how your grade correspond to US grade. Then you'll need to write GRE and make at least 320. You can get help on gre from here https://www.nairaland.com/1832477/how-achieve-high-scores-gre You'll also need to write a statement of purpose, a letter explaining your motivation for graduate school. You'll also need to write TOEFL and you need 3 letters of recommendation from your former school. If you have a publication, it'll further enhance your chance. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Re: Achieving The Dream Career: My Story, My Lessons by Nobody: 6:05am On Sep 13, 2016 |
QSFemi:Virtually all PhD programs are fully funded. The only thing one needs to do is to hustle for admission. Funding will sort itself out. |

xfire: I'm a 200 level student of one of the top federal university in Nigeria. I have poor communication skill, which is becoming a great deal of source of concern for me. I have prioritized my plan to overcome the weakness, but I lack the path to follow, the procedure and efficient method to adopt. Thus, I'm seeking for your help. I want you to put me through on the necessary path to follow, and the kind of activities that I need to get myself engaged into, as to conquered the weakness within 2 years. I'm aware that the mission will require sacrifice and patience. I'm ready for it, Sir. The only thing I need, now, is to know the method to adopt. Thank you, Sir . |

xfire:I really like to know you, you're the kind of person I like networking with, someone that would advance my reasoning and challenge me 24/7. Noticed you laid much emphasis on graduating with a first class, I consider that important too but trust me, it isn't all about the grade. I graduated with a first class from a highly recognized institution in Nigeria, I always thought I will have it easy after graduating with such grade but alas ! It hasn't been easy. The most important factor in really achieving one's dreams in a chosen career depends largely on self development, that's the aspect I 'm working on, would appreciate more advice from experienced minds. |
