Currently, there is a massive Protest going on in National Assembly, as many protesters carry placards. According to one protester, the protest is all about Local Government autonomy. They want direct funding from Federation Account and many others.

Our Constitution was drafted to elicit support from a group while some provisions were outrightly written to suit the whims and fancies of others.

While a part of the Constitution provides for a 3 tier government, the same is twisted to make the third tier a slave to the second tier.

Local government autonomy is good in a country where things work. Local government has became slave to State government where Mr Governor appoint and remove chairman as he pleases. Nigeria really need restructuring

Protest for resource control, regional autonomy, state police and private ranching of cattle.

That's what we need.

Yes we can start from here. The subject is on a common ground. After this we can move to other issues. Good protest.

We are getting there...Direct funding from FG to the LG is what we need so that LG can as well generate their IGR by themselves and use it judiciously.LG is the very close to the people...But their must check and balancing.Atleast we should start from somewhere.

NULGE aims are reasonable hopefully reps make sure the pass laws requiring transparency. Most their aims would require Constitutional amendment. It's good NASS seems sympathetic to their plight. The state exuactive tyrants need knocked down a peg.

Blue3k:
Conclusion:
The performance of local government to the development of Nigeria has been abysmal so far even with all the money allocated for it. The constitution needs to be amended to make this important tier of government effective to carry out duties. Full Fiscal autonomy is necessary and this goal can be accomplished by getting rid of following rules.
• Abolish State Joint Local Government Account
• Abolish Joint Allocation and Account Committee
• Direct allocation into Local government accounts
• Transparency in Local government affairs (fiscal and administrative)
• Fiscal Autonomy (pass budgets without approval of State governments)
• Local Government need to improve IGR

Direct funding = direct looting
Just different set of looters

The difference is that they are closer to the masses
They are held accountable by fewer stakeholders within the local government than state wide accountability in the case of governors.
It will never be the same even if they are to loot to the same degree as the governors
You have a direct culprit to hold for those areas of responsibility where they fell short in performance
Some sections of the local governments are clearly neglected by governors for mischievous reasons. Direct funding of LGA will end the practice
There will be checks and balances among the various tires of government

Police arrest allofdem.....!!! How can...??
North has 419 LGAs......Just a region in 1914 to date.

While the West and Eastern Regions have 355 LGAs. These are two separate regions in 1914 to date....

So how can..?? Let LGAS be abolished..... Say no to injustice.!!

I quite agree with you
But I had a short stint in the local government years back
The corruption there was endemic
Local govt was just a conduit pipe for money to be embezzled
So same old shit
Unless we have different ideology as an individual
