Nowenuse:Don't be harsh like this. If we want to minimize racism and discrimination between all of us(I'm not saying you are), we need to give attention and care for each other. Whether someone like it or not, what happened here will affect the whole Africa in specific and the world in general and also vice verse to us. Peace! ![]() 1 Like |

shervydman:You see, if you speak to a man in a language he understands,it goes to his head, if you speak to him in his language ,it goes to his heart. Last year, we were on a construction site somewhere in the countryside of kenya, and i was tasked with taking a group from Germany who were on a familiarisation tour of the project at hand since the German agency KfW, partly funded the project at 10%. The three of them had passable spoken english but many were the times when explanations were lost completely in language since they spoke heavily accented 'German English' and we spoke heavily accented 'Kenyan English'. I quickly realised what was afoot: the message wasn't getting through to them Without any warning, whatsoever i asked my MD if i could proceed in German. And without waiting for an answer from him, i did the rest of tbe presentation in my rarely practised but passable German. The look on their faces was precious. The older one amongst them was in fact spellbound and speechless throughout. Afterwards, alot of social capital was created, which I have yet to exploit. This episode made me realise that practising communication skills is and can be a game changer. I think also, there is a difference in communication styles and meanings between different peoples across Africa, and we have yet to study each other patiently and with reason, in order to get around misconceptions in intonation, body language and other forms of non verbal communication. Just imagine what would have happened to world history if Hitler had taken the letter Gandhi wrote to him ,seriously? 4 Likes |

MtuMsuper: Wait a second. How and where did you learn pidgin? ![]() For a non- west African, you are not doing that bad. The only problem about you speaking pidgin is that your non-Nigeria accent will still expose you. |

Nowenuse:Funnily enough, some years ago, a group of nigerians caught overstaying in tanzania were deported to kenya border and they claimed to be kenyans , even though their accent , dressing and phenotype was straight from a nollywood movie. Tanzanians love abandoning deportees at kenya border. 1 Like |

MtuMsuper: LoL @Straight from a nollywood movie. But na wa for my naija people sef. Dem too dey waka. Many Nigerians just have the hussling spirit and 'i must succeed mentality' especially Southern Nigerians from low income houses. Hardly will you ever find low income Central or Northern Nigerians leaving Nigeria to another African country for hussling. We rather remain in our villages and farm. I am from a middle class home however, so i may never really understand what those from low income homes go through as such. However, so, are you saying that you learnt this pidgin just by interracting with those few naija peeps? Or also tru Naija music and movies? |

Nowenuse:French escaped me. Its not too difficult to learn. You become a tolerant person if you live in a household where more than 1 language is spoken/heard. Even more if you grew up in such a place. Its Karibu = Welcome Hujambo/Habari? = How are you?News? Kwaheri = Goodbye Samahani = excuse me Tafadhali = please Shukran / Ahsante = thank you Mnaijeria = Nigerian Mkenya = Kenyan Uhabeshi = Ethiopia Mhabeshi = Ethiopia Mwanaume = man Mwanamke = woman Mwana/mtoto = child Ujinga = stupidity Umeme = electricity Maji = water Barabara = road I cant reproduce the whole dictionary obviously. 1 Like |

PissedYagami: How can west Africa be shittier? Compare the income per capital of West African countries and East African countries and see. The GDP per capital of ECOWAS is about $1,500. That of East Africa is far far lower (should be around $300). |

MtuMsuper: Okay, thats great. I hope one day, Black Africans would adopt a unifying language. Swahili and Naija Pidgin are the most influential right now, but swahili has a better edge. Hausa language have what it takes to challenge Swahili and even unite West Africa, just that most Hausa natives and speakers practice the kind of islam that is anti-progressive and they are still very very backwards. I speak Hausa though and i have observed that Hausa has some similar words with Swahili like DUNIYA, HATARI, and some others which i might have forgotten. I guess this influence is from Arabic, because 25% or more of Hausa words and grammar come from Arabic. |

gallivant:Imagine if Athi River mining, Mombasa cement, Bamburi cement and Blue Triangle cement were all given tp one license holder by govt of Kenya, and all his competitors strangled. MtuMsuper: YES, you are correct. However, Niger delta (Warri specifically) and Lagos are the 2 major places pidgin originated from and most new pidgin words originated and keep originating in these places. Yes, in South-south Nigeria (Delta, Edo, Rivers and Bayelsa states), pidgin is now becoming the mother tongue of many people here and is displacing their native languages, even in the most interior villages here, most of their elders speak pidgin. These states along with parts of Lagos is where the deepest pidgin dialects are spoken. I grew up in Delta state (Warri) and that's why i can speak very very deep pidgin. The best comedians in Nigeria are from Delta state because Deltans have the best command of pidgin in Nigeria which makes people laugh. Pidgin is the language of Naija comedy and music. 1 Like |
