How To Create Interesting Fictional Characters That Keep Your Readers Hooked 1 by sablewriter(f): 8:48pm On Apr 28, 2017 |
This is part one in a series of posts. If you’re a fiction writer, or aspiring to be one, you may already know the three basic elements of a story: • Characters (major and minor) • Plot (what the story is about • Conflict (action or suspense) Do you know that most romance readers read romance books for the sake of the characters more than for the plot? I’m a romance writer myself so that’s good news for me. That’s why I tend to put a lot of time and effort into creating my fictional characters. The process of creating a fleshed-out, three dimensional character involves asking a lot of questions. You’ll have to ask yourself: • What gender is your character? Female or Male? • What part of the country is he from? What tribe? • What is her name? • How old is he? • Is he tall, wide-shouldered, dark-skinned? Is she brown-eyed? Does she wear glasses? What is your character’s physical appearance? Example: height, skin color, eye color, hairstyle, body structure, facial structure • Is she educated? Secondary school level or university? What schools? What courses did he take? To be continued...
